American House Livonia was very nice and clean. The only thing was it was not secure. I didn't get to see the rooms. I saw the outside, the living room, and I had a meeting with the coordinator. Once we got to talking and he realized what I needed, that I needed more of a secure place because father wandered off, he referred me to see some other places. The living room was nice. There was a table there for them so I got to see some of the residents and some were on the porch. There was no odor. I like the place. The coordinator was very informative and helpful.

All this place has to offer is curb appeal and even that is backsliding. It's all a facade. It's miserable here. Unless you hate your "loved one," I would not recommend American House. Rather than painting the walls and putting new carpet in, money would be better spent on quality hires with quality training so they're able to provide the quality service and quality care they claim to offer. If all you care about is looks, perhaps consider this place. They do have (fairly) beautiful grounds, but we've all been told not to judge a book by its cover for good reason. This place is just a pretty book with a nasty story. Once you start getting into the story, you realize you were tricked! It's not what you hoped for, it didn't meet your expectations. The end result is a waste of time, money and energy. It's not supposed be an uphill battle. Two thumbs down. Zero stars across the board. There are no redeeming qualities worth mentioning. Would not recommend.

Provider Response

FNK, thank you for your feedback. It's always our hope our residents and guests have a pleasant experience with us. When they don't, we want to hear about it. Feel free to reach out to our Vice President of Operations, Marina, to discuss any concerns you may have. We value your feedback and look forward to hearing from you.

I visited this facility

When I visited American House Livonia, residents came up to me and told me how happy they were there. I had a really warm feeling there. One lady came up and said that she's been there for quite a while, and how everybody gets along really well, that she likes the place, and the food's good. They were all saying hi and how are you. The people that were doing the activities came and talked to us and invited Dad back for dinner on Wednesday night and that they would set up a card game for him. So, they were just so overwhelming. The studio apartment was really nice. The dining area was also nice, and they have one seating where everybody can sit. They didn't have to come at different times. The dining area was nice and big. They had some kind of music in there when I was there, and I got to sit and listen. They had a courtyard, and the studio apartments went around the courtyard. They're free to come and go.

We went to American House Livonia, it was nice and it's a decent place. They redo the walls and paint, and there's a new carpet for each person that comes in, so it's fresh. They do things like bingo, movie nights, arts and crafts, and they have their own tap machine that you could just go and fill your own cup with. I went into a little room and it was like a nice apartment. They have friendly staff.

American House Livonia was very clean and comfortable. It seemed like there was a good community feeling to it. The dining area was also clean and pleasant. We saw two different studios and the size was fine. The first one we went to had just been cleaned, so it was in good shape and was decorated nicely. The second one had new carpeting and it faced the courtyard, which was pleasant, but I noticed that the countertop in the kitchen was cracked and needed repair. Tara was excellent. She gave us a lot of help and time.

I was very impressed with American House Livonia. I liked everything about it. I liked the layout and the facility itself. The people were very good and very informative. If we could afford the extra money, I would be more than happy to place my mother there; however, we just don't have the funds to do it. The rooms were gorgeous. They were very, very nice. I wouldn't mind living there myself. Their amenities were all pluses. The staff mentioned quite a few activities. They have a craft room. They have little outings, little luncheons, little parties, and little get togethers. They have games that they try to get everybody involved in. They seem to be very anxious to get the people that live there in an exercise mode, so they're not just sitting stagnant all day and all night. They seem like they honestly care about their patients. The facility was very nice and very clean. I looked over their menu, and they seemed to have a pretty good menu there. I asked a couple of the residents what it was like living there, and they agreed that it was a pretty good place to be. I'm just sorry that it was out of my price range; otherwise, my mom would be there.

I visited American House Livonia and I liked it a lot. But once my mom would need more care, we would have to hire a third-party care provider, while the other place I toured already has that in place. It's basically more independent living. They had musicians and people coming in. They had bingo and exercise, they had outings that they did and stuff like that. They can improve by providing more levels of care.

We liked the American House Livonia because it was one story. So that is a feature that would be most appealing to our mother. The atmosphere was very welcoming. They have small kitchenettes and no stove. They had refrigerators, and you could have a microwave if you wanted. The staff member who toured us, she was very informative, and very friendly. It's very clean and everything. It was just the odor, and the girl did say that they are getting new carpet, and that could possibly be part of the problem. I know elderly people have accidents, and I'm sure that's just hard to get rid of. They do have some courtyards, and some places for people to go out and sit and enjoy the outdoors.

American House Livonia was wonderful. That was the most beautiful place I've ever seen. I talked to Tamika and she was great. From what I saw, they get a five-star for everything. One of my uncles lived there for a while and the place was exceptional. We looked at the studio and it was beautiful. I liked the dining room. They have sit down meals where they got a private chef and there's an abundance of activities. They gave us a list of what would actually be taking place from day to day. They would take them on a bus to go to places or go to the movies or have social days. They've got to bring in their own furniture to make it like their own home away from home. It was comfortable. There were private mailboxes all along the side, a beautiful fireplace, and a gathering room. If I decided to go to a place, it would be that. They had a beautiful window view. It was just pretty.

American House Livonia was very clean and very nice. The people were very helpful and gave us all the information that we asked for. They were very knowledgeable and they helped us out a lot. They took us around on a tour to see a few apartments that were set up, so we could see the setup of them. Everybody there was very nice and very polite. They also offer a lot of amenities. They have studios and one and two-bedroom apartments. They have a full meal service (three meals a day) and all kinds of activities. They have bingo, movie nights, and buses that will take people if they want to go out for the day.

I visited this facility

I toured American House Livonia. The rooms and the halls were clean. They had a library, games, different events that you can go to, and paint/artwork activities. I liked that they had certain rooms where you can walk out onto the terrace area from your room. The person that spoke with me was very nice, kind, helped me try to understand what was there, and gave me a pamphlet. The prices were a little cheaper, too. So, it's a good place. It's just that it wasn't for my aunt and uncle. Some areas smelled like pee and I didn't see a lot of the staff or anyone in the halls. The people were in their rooms. It felt more like I was in a nursing home.

I got to tour American House Livonia. What I like least is they knew I was coming for a tour and still the bathroom was nasty. It was dirty, and it was also a smaller room. It was basically a studio. The ones in the sister community were basically like an apartment with a full-size refrigerator, microwave, and stove. The place looked clean besides the bathroom in the room that I toured. The staffs who gave the tour were friendly. They didn't go over any of the activities or anything that the facility does. It's located near restaurants.

Provider Response

Deborah, thanks so much for your feedback. We appreciate you being open and honest with us.

My dad has moved into American House Livonia. I like that it was back off the road with the trees around it. I think what got me the first time was because they had so many trees. It was just a nice building. People were sitting outside enjoying the sun. Then when we went inside, the people were very nice, and it was clean. The staff seemed to be very nice and very helpful. My dad likes it a lot. They have daily activities, and they give an itinerary. They’re willing to work with you. He has a one-bedroom room, and we like how it was set up. I think his room before it became a one-bedroom might have been just like a big room, so in his apartment, he has a window in his bedroom and in the living room, which is nice. It's just a nice layout. The kitchen area has a little short pony wall, and it's a good thing because they can't cook. I like it, and he likes it, too. For us, as a family, the location is in the middle. My brother is the one that probably has to drive just a little bit longer because he's in Detroit. I live in Wixom, which is like 10 to 15 minutes away, and then I work in Livonia, so I can go see my dad before I go home in the morning. It is great. He can still go around to things if he wanted to, but he doesn't drive. Even though they're not locked down, you still have to be somewhat careful with them being able to go out, but he loves going out and walking around the whole building. For him, he just likes being able to go around, and he can rest if he wants to at one of the tables. He enjoys that, which is something he couldn't do a lot of when he was in his apartment going down steps. But now he can just walk out the door and do some exercise. We haven’t used the amenities yet because we brought over our own health care, but they can do their PT there if we choose to at a later time. With their medical staff, they can give them their meds. We are looking at maybe using their amenity of having somebody come in and showering him on the weekends. Though it adds up, some of it is worth getting because you can't be there 24/7. We also love that he has a day in the week that he can get his laundry done if we don't take it home in-between times. They will get it if he has a bad accident or something that he has to get his laundry done. He likes being able to get something to drink whenever he would like to in the dining room, and he can go out there and watch TV. He has a TV in his room, but that's there, too. It’s a different location and environment. Being in his other apartment, he didn't get to be around a lot of people because he just kind of sat there, but now he can have breakfast and lunch when they eat in the dining room, and he has his own little name on the table and he sits with two other gentlemen, and it's just nice. We had an ice cream social, and we always laugh, and we always say that's what sealed the deal. My father likes sweets, and that day we were visiting, we had an ice cream social, so that was great, too. I haven't tried any of the food, but he seems to like it.

My husband really likes American House Livonia. The food is excellent. He keeps bragging about how good the food is. It's been a week, but he's getting used to everything. I like the facility. They just did some remodeling and some painting to freshen up the place. Everything's good. The apartments are really nice. I'm satisfied. They provide a wide range of activities. A couple of times a month, they do outings with the residents. There's a group that play cards, they do trivia and all sorts of activities, and every day they have something scheduled. The staff is really nice. I have no complaints. I looked at a lot of places, but for the money, I thought it was well worth it.

I visited American House Livonia. It was all on one level, and my father was in a wheelchair. It was not too big or small, enough to where he can get around. Everybody was friendly and everything's included. So, the price was right for us. His particular apartment has a roll-in bathroom so his wheelchair can go all the way down to the shower, to the toilet, to the sink. And it's. It's perfect for him, I forgot what she called that bistro kind of thing, where they can sit around and have coffee, snacks, and watch sports; that was one thing he would be interested in. They also have the medical team right there for his physical therapy, and his showering. They have a salon for his haircut.

American House Livonia has nursing staff and medical staff available. My mom has a studio apartment and my mom says the food is OK. They have lots of activities like Bingo, going on trips, and they have special guests. Most of the staff members are really good, but a couple could use some improvement.

American House Livonia was beautiful and very nice. It’s a little bit pricier, but it's OK. They didn't have a lot of men there. The staff was wonderful. They're well-staffed, clean, and friendly. The places that the residents live in was good, and the dining room was gorgeous. It's very nice, and they have 3 meals a day. They don't advise cooking, but some of the units have microwaves and refrigerators. They encourage them to eat in the dining room and use their microwaves for snacks. They have exercises, and they can go outside to walk.

American House Livonia Senior Living was very nice. I took a tour, and I didn’t have anything wrong with it at all. The staff was friendly, and the areas were clean. The problem was the couple wanted a two-bedroom, and they only have a one-bedroom. Now, they are not going to move at all for the time being. I thought the dining room was clean, and it seemed like a regular dining room. Of course, I wasn’t there at mealtime; there were a few people there talking, but that was it. I think they seem like a caring staff and a friendly administration.

I went to American House Livonia. Overall, they were very pleasant and nice. They educated me on their services and walked me around. I thought the facility was very nice and clean. Overall, they're really good. They have like a game room, they have music where someone would come in and play music for the residents and get them involved, and I think they have pet where they could interact with pets. The main thing that stood out to me was the cleanliness and how I saw the staff interacted with the residents. They were very clean and up-to-date. The rooms were private but still would allow access for the staff to take care of them, so I thought the layout of the rooms were great.

My brother and my mom were not crazy about it, but I loved Livonia Senior Living. They offer everything you need, from just a little bit of assistance to full assistance. They had medical and they had a central dining area. The people were very nice -- could have been more helpful. We’ve convinced her to live with us, but if I could get her to live in a facility, that was our first option anyway. The rooms are nice. They had studios and they had 1-bedroom units. They were remodeling some of it while we were there, and it was very nice.

I visited American House for my husband, and I liked it. I was impressed with it. It was a little bit far for me to go, but I thought it was a nice facility. I didn't want a facility that had dementia and Alzheimer's with it because I don't think my husband could handle that. I wasn't there long. I just saw the studio apartment, which I liked, and I thought it was nice. I talked to the therapist, and she was very nice. I also talked to the director. I saw the dining room, and it looked very nice, and everybody looked very clean. It was very clean and it had no smell. They do a lot of trips and activities with their patients. However, I wasn’t there a long time because I wanted my children to come and look at the facility also. She said I could come anytime.

Right now my mom is at my sister, but we did visit a couple of American Houses. As a matter of fact if she had to be placed to one facility, I'd like her to put her on American House Livonia. That facility is very nice. It's close to home. They were very personable. They gave us lunch and it was just very nice. I like the layout of the place. Some of the rooms were built around like a little courtyard. They can go out to the courtyard, but they couldn’t go anywhere else. The rooms were spacious enough and they had a little kitchenette. They had activities going on. When we were there, they have exercise classes. They also have little game room where they can do puzzles.

American House was more up to date and modern. The rooms were okay. However, it was a little bit more costly.

We certainly try to keep with the times! Because of this and our amenities (which are priced out to residents on an a la carte basis, so residents only pay for what they need), we are a step above over communities which may not offer what we do. I took my mom out of this facility. Some things were good - such as the room size and the food. However, she never received much interaction from the staff. Like another reviewer said, there is too much sitting in front of the TV. Also, they seem to have a constant turnover of caregivers.

Provider Response

I’m sorry your mom left our community, ARelative. Our staff works hard at creating different activities and options for everyone to participate in, but sometimes our residents do prefer the quiet times we offer. If you have a moment, I would love to have a phone call to discuss your concerns and areas for improvement. I visited American House Livonia Senior Living when I looked for a place for me and my husband before. The staff were fine and the place seemed clean. I did not take a full tour of the facility. Thanks for letting us know what you thought of American House Livonia – I'm sorry that you felt it wouldn't be a good fit for you. While it sounds like you may have caught some of our residents enjoying some down time, I would like to mention some of our exciting partnerships and life enrichment programs that we do offer – including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, trips to the Tigers' games, and our American House Choir, to name a few. Should you change your mind, I would love the opportunity to host you back in our community.

The grounds of the facilities were very pretty and well-kept. There were many plants and flowers. The staff my parents and I interacted with were quite helpful and patient with addressing any concerns we had. We did have one experience where a staff member was impatient with us when we were asking questions while they were having a busy day. Generally, everyone was very helpful. Moving my grandfather in was a trying decision, and the staff did all the could to make it easier. When moving in, the neighbors came over to introduce themselves. It was a friendly community. My grandfather was unhappy at having to move to an assisted living community, but had no complaints with the community itself. The staff tried to insure that he did not feel helpless or "baby-ed," instead emphasizing that this was a natural progression of a living situation as one ages. Overall, I would recommend American House to others.

The staff was very friendly and we were encouraged to visit our "loved one" as often as we could after our initial visit ended. The rooms and areas in general were very clean and the scenery outside and inside the facility was quite pleasant. My friends grandma personally told us that life at this nursing home was quite good. She suffers from extreme arthritis which prevents here from moving around freely so she is confined to a wheelchair for most of the day. She assured us that they took great care of her and that this facility was a great improvement over the previous one that she was placed at. She also told us the food was quite good but she complained that there aren't really enough staff members to assign proper time and care for every senior citizen at the facility. I gave this place four stars (which is quite good for a senior living home in my opinion!) because my friends grandma really enjoyed it but they really didn't give each senior enough time with staff to keep them company.

Provider Response

It is always wonderful to hear our residents talking about their happiness here, and we are pleased that your friend's grandmother feels well taken care of at our American House Livonia location. Although we work hard to ensure all of our residents receive the time with staff they require, we may not realize that a resident would like additional time "” but we are more than willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they are getting everything they want and need. Thank you for leaving your feedback. Please feel free to stop by my office (you, or your friend) anytime. My door is always open!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Staff was always very friendly, but I would have like my grandfather to have more interaction with the staff. He hardly ever left his room and nobody ever really came to spend time with him. Also, he ended up with a lot of medical issues that went un-noticed by the staff, which was very disconcerning. All in all, it was pretty much what was to be expected from a long term care facility, but wish that we could strive to do more for the elderly.

Provider Response

We are sorry our staff fell short in giving your grandfather the attention and interaction he deserves as a valued resident of our community. We also understand your concern that his medical issues were not recognized in a timely fashion. We apologize we did not meet your expectations on both issues. We would appreciate your continued feedback so we can make improvements. Please contact me at your convenience at (734) 425-3050. Sincerely, Beth Bailey, Executive Director.
