My Mom spent her final six months here loved and cared for by the wonderful, attentive, and sincerely caring staff. Every member of the team shared timely, positive, kind, focused, encouraging and caring services. The food was excellent. And she was blessed with the best roommate on the planet. She told us often that she felt loved there, so vital when eyesight and strength are failing. Everyone we met immediately welcomed us and made us feel at home there. We will always be very, very thankful and appreciative.

Private rooms spacious and comfortable on Rehab wings. Most staff were very nice. PT and OT staff were exceptionally great! I wish call lights had the option of communicating requests. Response time to call lights very slow in evenings. Dietary sent items listed as not eaten by patient were consistently on tray.

Do NOT send your loved one here! The nursing staff was ok, food and PT were good but the Office/Administration are HORRIBLE!! They refused to do their job!!

Mother was sent for rehab from Henrico Drs. She was not in good shape and the hospital should not send people with out time for the facility to get their medications and the facility should not accept or admit people without their medications. So mother went an evening and night with no medications after a quadruple bypass heart surgery. Not good. The staff we (myself and siblings) observed were ok when you were face to face but were all yelling and arguing in the halls and at the nurses station. There was an argument between one woman and a man where she told him he should not be drinking beer and should be doing his job!! The staff that evening were definitely more interested in socializing with one another than they were in taking care of any residents. Typical nursing home urine smell. We were not permitted to stay past a certain time or someone would have stayed with mother overnight. She was removed from the "facility" the next morning.

My mother has been there for about a month. Probably will continue to be there. As far as her OT/PT goes, the staff as helped build her strength up. The nurses keep me informed. Only disappointing thing, memory impaired people need reminding of activities so they don't miss them. Food could be a little better.

I visited this facility

This facility is one of the worst I’ve seen yet. The residents aren’t allowed to eat their meals because they “take too long” in the exact words of one of the nurses who wanted to go on her lunch break so she took the trays from residents still eating. The residents are scared of the staff and would rather sit in their spiked clothing than ask for help. The place smells terrible as you walk down each hall. The residents sit in their wheel chair all day not changed regularly or properly bathed. I would never in a million years send anyone I love to this facility. Or anyone at all for that matter.

If I could give this place a negative rating, it would be a negative 5 stars.... First of all, my grandmother was there for short term rehab for what was supposed to be about a week or so. When my grandmother was released from the hospital, she was feeling fine. Upon arriving and getting settled into her room, she started feeling nauseated. She asked one of the nurses for her acid reducing medication to ease her stomach. First the nurse said that she would get it right away... which didn't happen until almost 10 p.m. at night! If they had to wait a certain amount of time to give a medication, they can still give her something for her stomach... Hello, Rolaids, Tums, Peptobismol, or a prescribed med like Zofran or something like that.... By that time she was vomiting and had waited for over 30 minutes after pressing her call bell for assistance from the staff. Needless to say, she had to go back to the hospital. This all happened in a matter of 9 HOURS. 9 HOURS!!! How in the world is this possible?! Thank God she is out of that pitiful excuse for a rehab/nursing home. From what I saw, I am not impressed at all by the service provided.

My mother was sent there to get her strength back up before she came home. When my mom arrived her room was dirty and the sheets were not clean! If the nurse button was pushed the fastest anyone ever came was about 45 mins. My mom had a bed alarm on her bed and it would beep if she got up and they told her not to get up with out someone... So why does it take 45 mins or longer for someone to come assist? When we asked for her nurse because we needed to know what was going on with my mom we were told the nurse had other pressing matters to tend to. The nurse eventually came in but we needed someone to help us because my mom was having some serious issues health wise. But other things were more pressing.... It was an awful experience that I hope no one has to deal with.

My dad was at The Laurels of University Park, and it's a good place. Aesthetically, it was more clinical -- more like a hospital type of setting. It was extremely clean. The staff was good, although the problem in this place was communication between the staff.

I am/was a resident of this facility

Hi there. I am W.S.S. and I was a patient at The Laurels at University Park for 4 months (03-07 in 2013) when I was dying and was under hospice care. I have been in other nursing facilities and found The Laurels pretty good in overall experience. Granted, there are always going to be a few staff members at ANY facility that probably need some training, or more empathy, or whatever, but I found the nurses, aides, and general staff to be pretty good here (I had 1 male aide that became a bit contrary, but everyone else was cool.) We live in an imperfect world and folks are human. No matter what we expect for the type of care we or our loved ones receive you have to put the human element into the equation before summing it up, and I can tell you from personal experience that The Laurels is a decent place to be. Everyone has a different and unique experience at each nursing facility and this one is better than others that have been rated more highly. Sometimes we should to be grateful for what we receive. Always remember, the alternatives are probably far more unpleasant. Thank You. W.S.S.

I honestly can't even give this facility a STAR. WHY? It is because the lack of care and also patient needs are NOT being met. My (close friend) is a patient there and I have visited her on numerous occasions every since she has been admitted. If it isn't one thing it is another with this facility. As of today, the patient has not properly eaten a full meal. The ONLY consumption is veggie/smoothie drinks from juicer in which don't get made but once a day. Not only that but while I was there the CNA's / Nurses barely came into the room unless the call bell is pressed. Do they check on the patient periodically? No! Does the blood pressure be checked everyday? No! Do they answer the call bell promptly? some do and there are some that don't. You may ask.. How do I know if I am not there all the time? It is because I am the Proxy/Guardian and I do ask these questions periodically. They (the staff) have expressed to the patient because of her ORGANIC diet that they can not provide the proper foods for her. In other words, they can not meet her food/dietary needs. But, keep in mind, there is food already stored in the refrigerators from Whole Foods, The Fresh Market, and also Ellwood Thompson in was purchased with my money as well the patient. The staff (administrative level) has expressed that she can not store/keep her items there for more than 3 days or it will be thrown away. So, you mean to tell me that this patient can't eat fresh meals daily - breakfast, lunch, and dinner because of her diet restrictions? Now tell me, who would want someone (outside of the facility) to prepare there food in advance and have it stored and then eaten? Not only that, no one can prepare th food for the patient either. I am appalled at the fact that a family member can't even gain access to the rehab kitchen to prepare the food. Also, another situation is: if a person gave up using a microwave over 10 years ago, why would they want to use it now? Wouldn't you think it is because it may very well because of a health reason why the microwave is no longer being utilized. So, at this point the patient is weak can barely move and is dizzy. Ok so per staff, the patient needs are very high/difficult (from there stand point) but you would think they would at least seek out organic foods because each patient dietary needs differ. In this day in time: with everyone juicing and eating healthier these facilities (skilled nursing/rehab facilities) would be a bit more equipped and lenient. How can they allow a resident this long without getting the proper nutrients? How does she suppose to get healthy if eating is apart of recovery? This facility has a lack of communication as well as compassion for the patients. I am sure they will see that this situation is a problem and will gain an attitude in reference to it. Is this patient being/ considered neglected by this facility? YES!

The staff at this faculty lacks the training and compassion to care for most of its patients. They were very incompetent in the way they took care,of a loved one during their stay. Repeated issues and verbal abuse were witnessed by other staff members. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing here and communication among staff members is poor. Would not recommend this facility to anyone, even a short term stay.

This is a good place if your loved one is able to speak for themselves or has mobility. Otherwise you may have a problem. The nursing staff is good, some of the aides are not trained properly or are just lazy. The place is very clean and the food is decent.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My dad had rehab at The Laurels of University Park, and I think the staff and the nurse do the best they can. I was just disappointed because they didn’t get my dad out of his room, and he got very depressed and lonely. Socializing for the patients really needs improvement, and they said they had activities, but he never really experienced any of them. I think they needed more staff to monitor the patients, but the place was well-kept and maintained.

My loved one stayed here

This facility was incompetent in caring for my grandfather. We were under the impression that he would receive the proper rehabilitation for his needs, and we found out later they did not have the skills needed. It also took them almost an entire week just to get him a TV remote after they told us they'd get one immediately. We stayed on top of them about it, but still it was not done until later, and even then, no one would take responsibility for letting this simple request take so long. We moved him to another facility after two weeks, and when we arrived to the new facility on the moving date we found that half of his personal items were missing when he got there and were left at the Laurels when he was moved! We went back to the Laurels to find all of his things still in the drawers, on the vanity, and even the TV was on. No one took responsibility for this huge error either.
