Independent Living Communities in Henrico, VA

"I am in Carriage Hill Apartments. They came up #1 as far as senior living here in Richmond, and that sort of impressed me. They are bigger than the normal apartments. The living room and the dining room are fairly big. It's a smaller kitchen, but still bigger than the other ones that I had looked up. The bedroom is large. I have a king-sized bed and a lot of other stuff. They really do a lot of activities, like lunches, happy hours, potlucks, and bingo. "

"I really like the storage that was available in the apartments at Aspire at West End. They have some really nice ones. I went and saw a one-bedroom-and-a-den that a lady was living in, and I said, "If the den is right there at the entrance with no doors, that's not going to work for me," because I want to put my loom in the spare bedroom, and I want the door to close. So, that was just one situation. The facility itself was in very good shape, even if it was a tiny bit dated. The negative would be that it's not a continuing care facility, and the neighborhood is a mix of ethnic backgrounds, and the apartments around the facility are run-down. However, they said that they had never had any trouble as far as stealing or damage or anything like that. They have activities, and they have an allowance for meals, which is twice as much as the other community. One way or the other, you're going to pay for mills, so that was not a big deal. The activities available seem to be okay. I like that community. The staff members knew that I was on a tour, so they could have been putting on a front so that they seemed to be very happy and pleasant. They smiled at me and seemed to be caring and attentive to the residents and stuff like that. The residents seemed to be very happy, so that was nice. I think it's an older kind of community, but it appears to be well-maintained. It has a pool, but it's small."

"I just moved into the Guardian Place a couple of weeks ago. It is a nice place. The atmosphere is good, the rooms are clean, and the people are outgoing and fun. They have people come and do the work if you need it right away. If you call, they'd do anything for you. It really is a pretty good place to be. "

"It was an older facility but it was fine. It was clean and accommodating. Their activities were pretty much the same as with what the other facility had. I thought there were a lot of similarities at what they were doing. With regards to the residents that they have there, they seemed to have a younger population even though the facility was older. I would recommend this facility but they need to clarify exactly the age level that they are providing for even though there were some who were around my age. "

"My mother-in-law lives in Westminster-Canterbury Richmond, which is larger and more formal than the other places I have visited. This community has so many people. They have groups that thrive, and it's like everyone finds their niche and plugs into it. It's easier to find a group that you belong to when there's more of them. Their facilities are top-notch, but the cost there is prohibitive. The people are always coming and going. I have dined there many times (we had Christmas and Thanksgiving there), and their food is phenomenal; it's like staying at the Homestead or Greenbrier. It's a good situation for the residents. I have not seen anyone at this community that's not thriving."

"The staff was incredibly polite and helpful, my chess partner suffered from a stroke that left the right side of her body paralyzed, the nurse that helped her was very kind, not condescending at all. The maintenance people were very efficient, unless something had to be ordered, any issue was fixed within minutes. It is however in a very old building, so things seem to break down fairly often. The Sunday service was very pleasant, and the choir is made up of residents of the home. The activities that the residents could participate in included bingo, and any card game you can imagine, from skipbo to spades (and some of those old women were putting down hefty bets.) to gin rummy. They have an excellent physical therapy regimen for my friend, which she says is helping immensely. After a couple chess matches we went down and played in a wii bowling tournament organized by the home, and had tons of fun. Came real close to winning too. Then we ate dinner together - apparently they have a great deal of variety - we had panbroiled lemon chicken with seasoned potatoes. I can't say much about the average meal, but thus one was great. Overall, I would give the Hermitage a 10/10, as would Agatha. RIP. "

"I am excited to see the improvements at this community since a new management company purchased them. I know their executive director came from Midlothian and she has a wonderful reputation in the senior living community. I am thinking about coming back to tour."

"My husband chose to move at Dominion Place Association because he liked that area of town. It was his first choice of places to move in. The apartments were small but it was well-insulated that you did not hear the neighbor's loud music. They had planned activities from time to time like dinner where everybody was invited. They also had social workers or people who helped the residents with different things like working on the computer. They also helped in choosing a cellphone or anything that they wanted to do. He had his own private place and he cooked his own food. "

"I toured Discovery Living At The West End. The appearance was very nice. It was very updated, and people were very nice. They have three meals a day and activities. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable. The assisted living spaces were extremely small and built like a hospital as opposed to a home, but they were very well-kept and very clean."

"My Father lived at Summerhill for a little over eight years before he passed. He enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and having his own unit that he bought. Summerhill has transportation for residents to go shopping, to a doctor's appointment, to church, and to special planned events. The staff at Summerhill is very pleasant, helpful, and there is round the clock security at the entrance and throughout the community. My father loved living there, and my brother and I were pleased with how he was able to maintain his lifestyle and enjoy new things. The unit he had was two bedroom and two full baths, a kitchen, dining area/living room, washer and dryer, and a lovely covered front porch. "

"Dogwood Terrace is very nice, the staff was very helpful, and the model apartment was very nice. I was offered the food, but I didn't try it. They offered 3 meals a day. It was nice enough that I would consider living there myself. "

"Cedarfield is a large facility. They have multiple eating venues. They have a lot of nice-sized apartments and a lot of facilities that appealed to me. There's a large park nearby with easy access, which appeals to me, too. They have multiple floor plans, but I am interested in the one-bedroom apartment, and that's what I looked at. I had a nice interaction with various staff people. They had a lot of nice common facilities like a swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a theater."

"My husband and I have been living at Norcroft Apartments. I love the place very well because the rooms are nice and spacious. The bathroom is a big enough for my husband and I. The staff is wonderful. They have quite a few programs. They take us out to grocery stores and to where I get my hair done. They have exercise and also have certain days for seniors like music day. I like that because I don't get a chance to get out much. They have transportation, so I like that a lot. The food and the dining room are wonderful. The food is good. I'm diabetic, and they make sure I have the right meal. It is wonderful. The facility is really good. My husband and I really don't have anything to worry about. You can see the security walking around, and the doors are lock automatically. "
