"My mother-in-law is staying in an independent living called Dogwood Terrace by Barclay. She feels comfortable there. She has had a couple of problems with the apartment, but the maintenance comes in very quickly and fixes whatever needs to be fixed. The staff is very responsive. We have called them a few times because she was having some issues, especially when she moved in, with the internet and they worked things out very well so she could feel comfortable. Every time she has a problem, and she calls them, they don't just let things fall through the cracks. They find a resolution immediately and fairly quickly. She is also very happy with the food there."

"I am on the waiting list for Aspire at West End. I like the floor plan. I like the average age of the residents. It is the closest facility to my daughter and her family. The staff was very friendly, very helpful, and knowledgeable. The director was the one who took me on tour. She was delightful, and she cares very much about her facility and the people who live there. The community is strictly independent living. The chef came out and met us when my daughter and I had dinner there. We were both impressed with the quality of the food. The people that I was in contact with were all very polite and very caring. The food was excellent. They only have independent living and don't have anything else for the others. If I were to need assisted living or something that was beyond what I could do with home health care, I would have to move. It doesn't bother me. I'm young enough now that I don't foresee that in the near future. Their median age is 72. They have several quite young people like in their late fifties, so they're more my age."

"I like the size of the apartment at Carriage Hill and I also like the amenities that they offer. It's close to one my friends and that is one plus. The place is very nice and the staff seemed available if there is anything wrong and if something has to be corrected. They have a bus that takes you to various places for shopping and that is also a big plus because I don’t have a car. The staff is very helpful. They did have a community center where you can use computer. They have a pool table, exercise room, and they have books if you want to borrow. They also have nice walking areas between buildings. This building has two floors but I am one the first floor so it's much easier for me. "

"Cedarfield is a large facility. They have multiple eating venues. They have a lot of nice-sized apartments and a lot of facilities that appealed to me. There's a large park nearby with easy access, which appeals to me, too. They have multiple floor plans, but I am interested in the one-bedroom apartment, and that's what I looked at. I had a nice interaction with various staff people. They had a lot of nice common facilities like a swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a theater."

"I went to visit and see The Westmont at Short Pump. The people were very cordial, they feel about the community, and the people that were there were very positive. I had a meal there, it was certainly very nice, and the accommodations are good. We're considering that place as a possibility for moving in. They provide a full range of care. They have bridge clubs, and men's groups, and people were busy. It just had a wonderful feel about it. And the person who gave me the tour knew all the residents and had conversations with them, as we walked around. It's just a nice place. It's a new facility, it has an outdoor courtyard, and it was bright and cheery. It's like an apartment building, it's not a campus. It's in a commercial area, but a very nice one."

"What I like best about Everleigh Short Pump is the staff. They were very, very helpful and accommodating. I like the flexibility of it. Everything was available. They had all the amenities, the theater room, and everything, but nothing was regimented there and I liked it. They did not have as many amenities, but I liked them a lot more because even though it was apartment living, it seemed more like a home rather than a hotel. They had everything. It wasn't as fancy as some other places, but they had everything. I wanted to appreciate the fact that they were so affordable for what they offered because they had a two-bedroom and two-bath well within my price point. The only problem was they didn't have availability. For a place that was nice with garages and everything, they are priced exactly right."

"My mother is in independent living now at Anthology of Tuckahoe. It's great. It's a brand-new facility. She thoroughly enjoys it there. It had modern amenities and tons of services. It had everything that we were looking for that other places that we visited was lacking. It's like six months old and nobody's ever lived in her apartment before. It's very, very nice. That's why we chose it. Anthology was the last place we went to, and it was perfect. They have a series of one and two bedroom apartments and they have some larger one-bedroom apartments that they offer. My mom ended up renting a larger one-bedroom, so it's got more square footage. They've got multiple activities like bingo, and they've got a movie theater. They have their own private washer and dryer, which I think was very important versus the community washer and dryer. The food is great. They have a nice, beautiful courtyard outside. They have a salon, they have exercise, and they offer up to three meals a day. My interaction with the staff has been very good. They have independent, assisted, and memory care at the same facility."

"Our tour at Westminster Canterbury was great. It's just too big and too expensive for what we wanted. The rooms were very adequate size-wise. They had studios, 1- and 2-bedrooms, cottages, and all kinds of housing. It's a huge place with a lot of people so the amenities are great and everything is in a larger and better scale to cater to more people."

"I went to visit and the lady that took me on tour was very nice. She showed me the models of the rooms and they were good. The residents knew the lady and they greeted her. The residents seemed comfortable and happy. They had different activities like trips, bingo, movie nights, and more which I did not remember. "

"I went to Hermitage Richmond, but it was not for my brother. It was a very fine facility, but the people there were very frail, and he's very physically fit. It was extremely well-maintained and beautiful. The people seemed happy. They were old and frail, but they were walking. Half of them were walking with walkers and the ones who were in wheelchairs were well-dressed. They were looking forward to dinner and they looked like they were going out to a banquet. They were happy and they seemed to have everything the people needed. It looked as though everybody's needs were accommodated. In particular, one lady just loves ironing, and I saw her ironing her sheets and clothes and she was happy with it. They take care of everybody's linen and personal clothing because they have a laundry room, but they seem to accom,odate people, whatever their needs might be. It was an extraordinary place for a large number of people with a variety of needs. It was very expensive, but it has high-end clientele. It's definitely for people who have the means. It's expensive for the average person, but they do offer quality services. I didn't eat there, but I could smell the tasty food, and it smelled really good. Everybody was happy."

"I i’ve been a resident for almost 2 months now and cannot say enough about the management here. Miss Vicky is one of the kindest and knowledgeable people. I have talked with in a while. She’s always trying to help to make things easy, especially for us. new tenants. My brother loves it, especially because we came from a place that had steps and we really needed a place without steps so we’re really grateful that we were able to get in here and plan to stay for a very, very long time. Hopefully, the last move will ever make."

"Avery Point was really nice. It was brand new but absolutely huge and still growing. The pool was nice and very big. This community is still being built. They're adding up to five or six more buildings to their development, making it significantly larger. The pool was beautiful. The people seemed nice. They are for-profit, and their continuing care section is not really up and running because they're doing so many buildings. Because they are so huge, being able to get around if I'm all the way across campus (Like, am I going to have to get in my car to drive?) was a concern for me. It was a beautiful campus in between all of the constructions, but I was afraid it was going to be too big, that I would get lost in the shuffle. The people seemed friendly. The facility was well-maintained and kept up."

"I went to Lakewood. The pool was really nice. I have a friend living there, so that was nice also. It's pretty big, which makes me a little nervous. If it is too big, am I going to be able to get from A to B if I'm all the way across the campus? Most of them have walking paths that are covered, so you don't have to worry too much about the outside weather and stuff like that, but this one was nice. The waiting list wasn't astronomical; it was probably two years. The room sizes were good. I think there's an allotment for food, but I did not have any of it. My friend says that the people there are just wonderful. The staff was friendly, and the residents seemed happy. The facilities were nicely kept. There were lots of activities and things to do if you chose to, so that was another one that was very positive."

"My husband chose to move at Dominion Place Association because he liked that area of town. It was his first choice of places to move in. The apartments were small but it was well-insulated that you did not hear the neighbor's loud music. They had planned activities from time to time like dinner where everybody was invited. They also had social workers or people who helped the residents with different things like working on the computer. They also helped in choosing a cellphone or anything that they wanted to do. He had his own private place and he cooked his own food. "
