Independent Living Communities in Midlothian, VA

"We like Chesterfield Heights Gracious a lot, but it doesn't have assisted living. We saw a couple of rooms, and they were nice. The rooms seemed like something you would expect. They had a pretty good size lobby area where guests could sit and gather. They had a lot of things that went out. They have a bus to take people to different places. There are two sets of managers -- two married couples -- and they live at the facility, which makes it even nicer because they know what's going on all the time. They seemed to be very involved in what's going on. Sanitation was very good. The food was very good. They have food all day long. You could eat just about anytime you want to. It was setup nicely. It had separate tables. It was very nicely done. "

"A fairly recently built facility near downtown Midlothian. The exterior is clean and nice looking and as you first walk to the entrance you are usually greeted by a friendly group of residents sitting outside either enjoying a cigarette or simply the weather. Once you walk in there is a large lobby/reception area and a little further in is a large commons area for residents to sit and socialize. It seems as though many of the residents are very active and social still for their advanced age. I believe this is because it is a facility that does offer some assisted living but does not take care of patients needing special attention. When I go to drop off food for some of the residents there I am always met in this lobby/commons area so I have not had the chance to see much more of the facility or even talk to any of the staff. "

"I toured Brandermill Woods for my father. This is another community where it's on the same property, but it's two different buildings. There's one building that has assisted living and memory care, and then behind that is another building. People there are bedridden, like really sick and really ill, but the building that I visited was assisted living with memory care. I thought that it was well done. We get to take the elevator downstairs. It's not that it's in the basement, it's just the way the community is set up on a hill. Instead of having stairs, they just have an elevator, because it's just the way that it's level with the land. There is an outdoor area for the memory here. There's also an outdoor area for the assisted living. There are events where they will bring the memory care up to participate with the assisted living people, like when they have group events, a large event, whether it's entertainment or what have you. This is another place that was very, very, very pretty. It was very nice, and very well kept. I'm not sure how old it is, but it looks newer. It has brighter windows, and the sunshine was coming through. The downside with the memory care was it's not that big. I got to see one of the rooms, and it was newer, modern, and very nice, and then as we were walking down the hall one of the residents had her door open, and it was a nice room that was fairly large, she could sit in a lot of them. She had her TV room, a couch, and a bed. The room sizes range. What I liked the most was the scenery. There's flowers, greenery, and nature. There was also an outdoor area and eating area. What I liked the least was the memory care was an L shape, and that's it. You got two hallways that form an L. They do have an outdoor area, but that's it. Within that area they have the eating area, and that kind of thing. That's where they are most of the time, unless they're brought upstairs to mingle with the assisted living for an activity or something."

"Brandermill Woods is a Retirement community with on site individual cottages that are beautifully maintained. It also has a community house with apartments for assisted living . And across the street a nursing care facility and Alzheimers care wing. The community center has a lovely full service dining room and activities and exercise room and craft room, that keep everyone interested. My parents moved into a cottage recently. The electronic device on site for safety and check in service is easy to use and appreciated because my mother has Parkinson's and it is a relief to me to know if my dad is not home, mom has her fall necklace on and help is moments away. They have been more social now that they were living in their home. Dinners out with friends and clubs keep them social and active. Peace of mind and my parents happiness with where they are living is such a gift. "

"Harvest Glen Community is a mile from my house. I like that it's a single floor, and it's a nice open layout inside. They do have a clubhouse and a pool. I think they do all the yard work with outside maintenance. The place is fine. I have been there a lot because I know older people that live there. They have garages attached, which is nice. The staff was very nice, they let us in, and they were fine."

"My Father lived at Summerhill for a little over eight years before he passed. He enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and having his own unit that he bought. Summerhill has transportation for residents to go shopping, to a doctor's appointment, to church, and to special planned events. The staff at Summerhill is very pleasant, helpful, and there is round the clock security at the entrance and throughout the community. My father loved living there, and my brother and I were pleased with how he was able to maintain his lifestyle and enjoy new things. The unit he had was two bedroom and two full baths, a kitchen, dining area/living room, washer and dryer, and a lovely covered front porch. "

"When I walked in the lobby, it was very nice. It was all decorated for Christmas already, even though it was only Thanksgiving. I think that is a good sign, because it puts me under the impression that they are cheery around the old-folks, and care about Holidays and having families visiting. The furniture and other objects in the lobby were also extremely nice. The furniture was antique and so beautiful. I would have loved to have furniture like that in my home, it was very luxurious. We then proceeded to the elevators and went upstairs to my boyfriend's grnadmothers' rooms. They were a very nice size and one of them was heavily decorated. They each had about three rooms including a private bathroom, which I liked. The room we had dinner in was a very nice size as well. I liked the fact that they had seperate rooms for meetings or dinner and it was just my boyfriend's family and me there, no strangers. That was also slightly impressive, and made things a lot less awkward. "

"Elance at Tuckahoe was very pretty and bright. It had a specific light palette, and it was very appealing. We looked at their 2-bedroom apartment, and we were impressed with the way everything was at that particular place. What I liked best about it was its appearance and its appeal. The woman who showed us the facility was very upbeat and very helpful. She was very friendly and personable. She answered all the questions that I asked. We also met someone from the dietary department. The food was excellent, and I liked the setup where you could order from a fairly varied menu. It was not during mealtime, but they prepared something for us. The place was sparkling clean."

"We went to Lakewood and toured that, but we're not too comfortable in it. The apartments were a little bit smaller than the other place, although they have a wide variety of them. Some were bigger, some were smaller, but the ones we were pre-qualified for were a little bit smaller. The staff was fine."

"My parents are still in Forest Creek. It is a decent place. It's for 55-plus only. What I like best is the accommodations. Everything is on one floor. It's a really clean area, which is what I like best. As far as the maintenance, the worst thing is the response time when you're trying to get some questions answered. The response time can really be better. My parents make their own food. They have activities. It's not much, but my parents don't participate at this time. They have a community center there that give programs or events. They have a salon or someone who does hair. For what they're paying for, it's pretty average for what they have."

"The Park at Ridgedale was very nice. The lady that was there was very informative. But they didn't have an apartment available for me to see at the time. They gave me handouts, explained everything to me, and answered any questions that I asked. "

"My husband and I have been living at Norcroft Apartments. I love the place very well because the rooms are nice and spacious. The bathroom is a big enough for my husband and I. The staff is wonderful. They have quite a few programs. They take us out to grocery stores and to where I get my hair done. They have exercise and also have certain days for seniors like music day. I like that because I don't get a chance to get out much. They have transportation, so I like that a lot. The food and the dining room are wonderful. The food is good. I'm diabetic, and they make sure I have the right meal. It is wonderful. The facility is really good. My husband and I really don't have anything to worry about. You can see the security walking around, and the doors are lock automatically. "

"Cedarfield is a large facility. They have multiple eating venues. They have a lot of nice-sized apartments and a lot of facilities that appealed to me. There's a large park nearby with easy access, which appeals to me, too. They have multiple floor plans, but I am interested in the one-bedroom apartment, and that's what I looked at. I had a nice interaction with various staff people. They had a lot of nice common facilities like a swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a theater."
