My mother-in-law lives in Westminster-Canterbury Richmond, which is larger and more formal than the other places I have visited. This community has so many people. They have groups that thrive, and it's like everyone finds their niche and plugs into it. It's easier to find a group that you belong to when there's more of them. Their facilities are top-notch, but the cost there is prohibitive. The people are always coming and going. I have dined there many times (we had Christmas and Thanksgiving there), and their food is phenomenal; it's like staying at the Homestead or Greenbrier. It's a good situation for the residents. I have not seen anyone at this community that's not thriving.

I toured Westminster Canterbury Richmond. It was very nice. I liked its overall position and its very gracious employees.

This facility doesn’t treat people with respect and to get someone to answer a phone after 5:30pm, even in an emergency, is impossible for me to do. I’m very displeased and would not recommend this facility to anyone. Director, social worker and charge nurse all have full voicemails and there isn’t a human available through the phone. Unreal.

Our tour at Westminster Canterbury was great. It's just too big and too expensive for what we wanted. The rooms were very adequate size-wise. They had studios, 1- and 2-bedrooms, cottages, and all kinds of housing. It's a huge place with a lot of people so the amenities are great and everything is in a larger and better scale to cater to more people.

Westminster Canterbury Richmond is a good place. It is a very expanded community, so the residents have to walk long distances to go from one activity to another, which is good for their health. It is a little bit exclusive, and it's very popular with residents from certain neighborhoods in Richmond, so they feel like they are still in the same community seeing all the familiar faces in this senior living place. They bring in performances in their auditorium like Richmond Ballet, the Richmond Symphony, and the Virginia Opera so the residents don’t always have to go to the theaters to witness these performances. They’ve also got in Cirque du Soleil, Hawaiian dancers, and guest speakers on a large scale. The place has a more formal dining room and a café, and for those, you have to pay additional cost.

The people at Westminster were very friendly, good to their employees, and the employees were good to the residents. They had nice programs, including educational programs which I would be interested in. It’s like a whole city in one big building. The Richmond Symphony comes quite frequently and the opera, which I am very interested in. They have all kinds of exercise programs and a wonderful exercise room. For my husband, they have an art studio, wood working, and everything else imaginable. We were very pleased with it.

Westminster Canterbury is excellent; the room is decorated really nicely with a pretty carpet. The staff is very nice, smiling, and friendly too. They have a lot of activities for the residents. They have a swimming pool, arts and crafts, exercise classes, choirs, and an auditorium where they have shows and plays.

Westminster-Canterbury was spectacular. It was like a college campus and everything was high level including the activities, décor and food. I only went to my friend's room and it was lovely. The staff were very friendly. And this facility was certainly at the top.

Buildings were kept up fairly well, but a rash of room fires some years back made us cautious. Food preparation staff were negligent (lost a wire bread bag twist tie in food, which was served to guest). Staff seemed dutiful enough but far from enthusiastic.

This place is lovely. A friend of mine lives here with her husband and I have visited multiple times. They have a lovely two bedroom apartment that also has an office/study. I have eaten lunch in the beautiful dining room and the food is delicious. They also have a pharmacy, beauty salon, pool, workout area and professional trainers. My friend has Parkinson's disease and she has a special workout program designed for her. They also have a very active social life there as there is always a cocktail party somewhere. There residents are ultra friendly and the staff is too. They seem to genuinely like working there. This is the Lexus of facilities in this area.

I have many friends who made the move to Westminster-Canterbury, a continuing care retirement community located just outside the city of Richmond. Over the years I have spent quite a bit of time visiting and participating in many of their events and activities. When the time comes to make a move to assisted living, I hope that I will be able to move into one of their apartments. Westminster-Canterbury is one of the more prestigious assisted living facilities in the area. Because of how it operates, residents must invest a considerable amount of money in an apartment and then pay a pricey monthly maintenance fee. In return, they are guaranteed perpetual care at Westminster-Canterbury, which includes any necessary moves to their nursing facility or dementia care unit. As a continuing care retirement community, you get ""care for life"" when you make your initial down payment and buy-in. Westminster-Canterbury recently underwent a major renovation, adding hundreds of new apartment units and renovating the older buildings and facilities. The result is a beautiful campus which provides residents with everything they need on-site. A state-of-the-art theater hosts concerts and plays, and the swimming pool can be used for recreation as well as therapeutic exercises. The heart of Westminster-Canterbury, however, is its care. Residents in the assisted living complex are pampered by the staff and given many choices in how they choose to spend their days and evenings. While on-demand assistance is available 24/7, many residents are more independent and can choose whether to eat in their room, in the elegant dining room, or at one of the many snack bars or cafeterias. The nurses are always present, yet they quietly blend into the atmosphere, making the facility seem less like a nursing home and more like a college dormitory. Living at Westminster-Canterbury is only for those who have enough money to make the initial investment and continue to pay hefty monthly fees; yet, living there provides peace of mind for both the resident and their family. Every one of my friends is happy there. They feel relieved that help is only a call button away should they need it, and they are excited and energized by the variety of activities available. Westminster-Canterbury provides excellent care in an elegant southern setting for those who can afford it; although there are programs available for individuals who have limited means, the waiting list is long, so the only negative factor about this facility is the affordability quotient. Not everyone has the means to live here. But if you do and you can qualify for a room, Westminster-Canterbury is a top notch place to spend your retirement years.
