"Greenspring at Erickson Living looked nice. There were a lot of activities and a lot of people to do activities with such as card playing, swimming in their indoor pool, and a lot of other things. I am planning to move into their independent living section. Depending on the size of the apartment you want, there are 19 different styles of apartments and depending on the one that you pick, there is so much space. The staff was kind of attentive, but the food, I hear, is very good and we did have lunch there. I would like to see more restaurants rather than having to walk through the park to get to one. "

"Vinzon Hall was suggested by my daughter. I liked the atmosphere. I went back to see it probably 5 or 6 times and talked to the marketing people. They just built a new expansion, and I found an apartment there, a brand new one that I liked. It was a two-bedroom apartment. I planned to move there in April. I ate there, and I thought the food was good. The staff was very accommodating in showing me around. They gave me a lot of time. I chose the place because I am a military wife of a retired officer, and that was who they mainly had there, and I wanted to be with people like me. The ground was very nice. It was well landscaped, had nice full grown trees, and it was a very pleasant environment. I would recommend them, but it was restricted to retired military and state department people, so it was not available to everyone. "

"Goodwin House seemed like a very well-organized community. People were very friendly, and it seemed a bit closer knit; it's one of the reasons why I like it. It also has a different financial model as well. The staff were very nice and very knowledgeable. It has a very friendly environment, and everybody knew each other. They have lots of activities on site. They also have education for the residents to take classes. They have offered different workshops as well. They have different kinds of arts and craft type rooms. They have a gym and a pool. It was definitely very appealing. "

"I visited this assisted living facility several times to interview some of the residents for a study about seniors. I was a graduate student at the time and interviewed seniors throughout Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. Some Goodwin House residents had elected to participate in the study. Goodwin House was one of my favorite places to visit because there was a great sense of community between the residents there. Most of them lived independently, having their own apartments with the convenience of meal preparation, maid and medical services. The apartments were very nice, especially on the top floors. Many of the residents I interacted with had packed schedules since Goodwin House offers several activities. A few of the residents chose not to be so social and they had the option to spend more time in their own apartments. The facility is close to several stores and the surrounding area felt pretty safe. There was one floor that exclusively housed nursing home residents. This floor didn't feel like a typical nursing home to me because it was connected to such a large assisted living facilty and nursing home residents had access to several of the resources assisted living facilty community residents did. If I had to choose an assisted living facility for a loved one or myself I would choose Goodwin House. "

"This is a wonderful place to live, beautifully kept up with a staff that knows you by name. No name tags here. There is much to do, Bridge, book clubs, volunteering, many activities for all age groups. Great fitness center, swimming pool, outdoor areas, tennis courts. Walking distance to the river. Maid service, at your door newspapers. Great health center, library, crafts room. You can choose from a apartment, all sizes, duplex or cottage. Alzheimer’s unit will soon be built. Gated community, very secure."

"The Ashby Ponds community is beautiful. From our initial impression, it's a very nice, well-run facility. The staff who gave the tour was very knowledgeable, she knew the property and she said this is the second one of these properties she's worked at. And in fact, her in-laws lived there, so she had a personal connection with it too. The downside to this one is it's a very large community, it has multi buildings, and my mother is not very mobile. It's one of those that's continuing care, so they've got the big upfront fee you'd have to deposit, and you'd have to make up your mind on that. That's a place where I could find a lot of stuff to do. They had it all. They have a fabulous indoor pool, they have several amenities like that. The residents were very active. We saw residents building military facilities, playing dominoes, you name it and they have it. It's close to a hospital, it's close to a mall and close to restaurants."

"The rooms are fantastic, big, very clean and comfortable! The staff is polite, responsive, courteous! The whole process of selecting the facility, signing the contract and moving in was flawless! The food is delicious. Since the assisted living facility is new the daily programs are limited but residents can participate in activities in the independent living section of the complex. My husband moved in 11 days ago, so far I rate the facility excellent!"

"Knollwood Military Retirement Residence has a lot to offer. It has different levels of care from independent, assisted, to skilled nursing, and another separate Alzheimer's unit. Everyone seemed very friendly and cooperative. I looked at both the independent and Alzheimer's apartments, and they were very nicely spacious. It's very clean and all the patients there seem to be involved in activity at the time of my visit. The food looked healthy and they serve three meals. You can either go down to the restaurant with a little snack bar, or you have the option to cook in your own place. "

"The Village at Rockville was very nice, and the people were very kind and nice. The only thing is that they had a 5-year waiting list for the cottage that I wanted. I ate in the cafeteria, and the food is very good. They have gardens, and they have little cottages. It’s nice because you have your own entrance. "

"I just felt that Kensington Park has everything I need. I was happy with everything it was set up. It's only a couple of blocks from where my other daughter lives. My apartment has a bedroom, a nice kitchen, and has lots of windows. The people seem to be nice. I feel like I'd be in a good place. I'm a vegetarian and they've assured me I can eat vegetarian and I will have access to doctors and nurses all the time. I'm not sick and I will have different places to go. I'm looking forward to moving there. It's fairly close to Washington and they have a lot of activities that I think I'd be interested in. "

"The Armed Forces Retirement Home was nothing like I thought it would be. I was sure that when I arrived, it would just be a bunch of veterans sitting around on old furniture, telling old war stories about days gone by, and the staff would have a lackluster attitude toward the residents. Nothing could be further from the truth! The AFRH was incredible! The staff truly cared about the residents, and they did a great job of interacting with the residents by treating them as an every day member of society, not as someone who was going to die soon. When it came time to hand out medications, it was done discreetly, and there was no "line to the pharmacy", as the nurses who would dispense the medication came to the individual resident and talked with them before giving the medicine. During dinner, the residents were allowed to walk up and select the food they wanted and carry it themselves, if able, instead of sitting at a table and just having it dropped in front of them. The residents appeared very happy to be living there, and their interaction with the staff showed that the staff was extremely happy to have the chance to serve these veterans as well. The rooms for the veterans were modest, but they had plenty of room to store their own things and make the rooms their own. This was done by providing shelves for the vets to have photos on, or memorabilia from their days in their respective services. The only downside to the home was that they had closed down one of the buildings because they were going through a remodeling process. This created some noise during the day, and a little bit of a mess outside due to the construction, but overall this was a minor hiccup to an overall great facility! The knowledge that they would be building a brand new building on the space vacated by the old building made me really happy to know that our veterans were going to get an even better facility than they already have. "Ingleside was a very nice place. I ate a meal there and the food was very good. The staff was fine as far as I could see. However, it was high priced. You needed to make a payment of $400,000 to get in and then you would have to pay a couple of thousand dollars for living there. "

"Asbury Methodist Village is very nice, well kept, and offers a variety of housing. It's extremely expensive because it is a continuing care facility. I do not like that I will get involved with skilled care and intermediate care; if I need it, I will get it, but I do not want it now. "

"I've decided to go to Riderwood and put down a deposit. I have a number of friends who live there who are very satisfied. They have long corridors, so it's a long walk to the dining room but that's good exercise. The people are very friendly and say hello when you meet them in the hall. The grounds are kept very well. They really look out for the residents. From what my friends have told me, I think it would be a very good fit for me. The sales rep was very helpful, answered all my questions, and followed up. I've been very satisfied with the way they handled the whole thing. There's an art studio, music room, physical fitness, library, and all kinds of clubs. It's a very active community."

"My mother will be moving into Brooke Grove. It's not a fancy place, but it was clean, well taken care of, and adequate. The people were friendly. I liked that she'll be able to stay there the rest of her life because they have long-term care also. She won't have to go anywhere else. All the levels of care were on the same campus, and that's what I was looking for. I saw a nice big bedroom that had a good bathroom to accommodate her walker. They had field trips and games, and some residents were chatting on the porch. They had dining areas in separate houses. Each house had 16 residents and it had a big lobby and a big gathering room. I kind of liked the idea that it's a little more intimate."

"The rooms at Collington were nice. You could have your own kitchen because they always remodel the kitchens when people go in. You could have carpet or hardwood floors and your own washer and dryer. They had a restaurant where you could go to eat and get so many meals for free, but you had to buy in. It's a good place, and we'd like to go to it. They also had an assisted living place and a place for you if you came down with Alzheimer's that you could transfer to. The people were pretty friendly, and they had a lot of activities that you could do and trips. It was like a community. They check on you if you didn't get out of your room at a certain time by knocking on your door to make sure you're OK. They had lots of activities. I had a meal there because they had an open house, and the food was pretty good. They had boats that you could get on and go fishing, and they had a place where you could garden and grow your own flowers. They had a choir that you could join in and a lot of nice things."

"I toured Comfort Senior Care Facility. It was nice. It was clean. The rooms were nice, clean, and comfortable looking. The gentleman that I met with and gave me the tour, was very knowledgeable and professional. If I were going to do residential, that would be the place that I would have chosen from the ones that I toured. There were plenty of activities set up. Their activity room was nice. The layout was set up for the residents, everything was spaced nicely. It was just a really good-looking place. Meals are included. The menu looked great."
