The small town of Vienna, which is located just 17 miles from Washington D.C. has a senior community that accounts for nearly 14% of the population. It was listed by CNN Money Magazine in 2013 on its Best Places to Live list for its high walkability, unique stores and local eateries. The city is home to the Patrick Henry Library, which has a collection of roughly 95,000 volumes. and hosts a variety of programs and events throughout the year, including adult summer reading programs, author talks and musical guests.

In Vienna, seniors who need assistance with the activities of daily living but desire to remain in their home may receive home care services. According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care report, home care, including homemaker and home health aide services, are a little pricier in the Vienna region than in the nation as a whole. On average, homemaker services cost $22.50 per hour and home health aide services cost $23.38 per hour, compared to the respective national hourly rates of $21.00 and $22.00.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Vienna, so data for the closest city, Washington D.C., was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Vienna area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Vienna Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Vienna:

Home Repair for the Elderly Program

Address: 3700 Pender Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030
Phone: (703) 246-5100

This program provides minor home repair and accessibility modification services to Vienna seniors with low or moderate incomes. Up to $500 in materials and one week in labor is covered under this program. Some services provided include interior and exterior painting, screen replacement for windows and doors and installation of grab bars and other accessibility devices. All labor and materials are provided by Fairfax County and funded by the county and federal government, making it free for qualifying seniors.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 214 Fort Collier Road Suite 3, Winchester, VA 22603
Phone: (540) 665-0200

The weatherization assistance program helps Vienna seniors reduce their heating and cooling bills through the installation of energy-saving measures. Some services covered by this program include finding and sealing air leaks, adding insulation and repairing furnaces and air conditioners. This program is administered by the Department of Housing and Community Development in coordination with CHP Energy Solutions, a local non-profit organization.

Tax Relief for Seniors and People with Disabilities

Address: 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 225.5, Fairfax, VA 22035
Phone: (703) 222-8234

Qualifying seniors in Vienna may receive real estate tax relief and vehicle tax relief for up to one household vehicle through this county-funded program. This program is available to seniors age 65 and over. Seniors who turn 65 during the year of application may receive tax relief on a prorated basis. Acceptance into this program depends on the applicant’s income and assets.

Fairfax Area Meals on Wheels

Address: 12011 Government Center Parkway, Suite 708, Fairfax, VA 22035
Phone: (703) 324-7948

Fairfax County’s Meals on Wheels program provides home-delivered meals to seniors age 60 and over who reside in the Vienna region. Delivery is available on weekdays, and seniors may receive between six and 15 meals a week, depending on the number of volunteers in the area. Vegetarian meals are available. While this service is available for free, seniors are given the opportunity to pay a portion of their meal cost.

Elderlink

Address: 12011 Government Center Parkway, Suite 708, Fairfax, VA 22035
Phone: (703) 324-7948

This program provides affordable care management services to seniors in Vienna. Some services covered by this program include an in-home assessment, development of a comprehensive care plan and monitoring to ensure quality and appropriateness of care. The cost of service is based on a sliding scale that takes the participant’s expenses into account.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
