"I spoke with a total of 4 home care providers when looking for assistance with a loved one suffering from dementia/Alzheimer's and am so thankful for guidance provided by Home Instead. Within a couple mins of speaking to their VP of Marketing (Pam) I learned of her unique insight and passion for helping families deal with the scary inconsistencies of memory loss. To say she went above and beyond during what was essentially an emergency situation for my family is to sell her short - she personally filled gaps in the schedule to provide the respite I needed and was extremely conscientious about our loved one's experience with the caregivers. She also strongly advocated for a full time memory care facility (even though this meant we would only use her services for a short period of time), made recommendations for local ones she thought would be a good fit, and followed up with me personally after the transition to see how I was doing and how the transition went. If you are looking for in-home care in the Northern Virginia area, I strongly recommend starting with Home Instead Falls Church and using them as your comparison for any other organizations you might consider."

"We hired HomeCare.com for my parents, and it's been excellent. The lady does everything we ask her to do and then some. She gets along good with my parents. She's a really good lady. We've been using them for seven weeks now, three days a week, six hours a day. She runs errands, she drives them places, does grocery shopping, housecleaning, and cooking. It's a great value."

"I cannot thank Jamie and Paragon Home Care enough for the help they provided my parents during their time of need. Both parents suddenly needed in home assistance and Jamie came for an initial visit less than 24 hours after my initial call. Within 48 hours of the call a kind, professional, competent caregiver was there to help my mom. 24 hours later, my father came home from the hospital and needed assistance and we increased, the number of hours immediately. As my parents slowly improved they worked with us to reduce the caregiver hours safely. Working with the Paragon group has been straight forward and incredibly easy. The caregivers were kind, arrived on time for every single visit, jumped in to help with sensitive bathing and cleaning needs, and adjusted their tasks as the needs changed. I cannot praise them enough for giving a concerned daughter peace of mind."

So far, we have had really good success with them. The caregiver is providing personal care, light housekeeping, and things like that. The value for the money is very reasonable. So far, the caregiver is very good. She is a live-in, so she's really good. The communication is excellent. They're very personable, very quick to help, and very available."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
