"Iliff Nursing Home & Rehab Center has been very beneficial for my father. He has recovered many of his functions and strength. They have provided all his needs and he's fed well. They have a library type gathering place, but it's very small. They have a dining area with tables and chairs. It's been a good experience for my dad. It just seems to be crowded. Every room is full and shared. The staff is very attentive and dedicated, but there is no activity coordinator and there are no activities. It's expensive, but not luxurious."

"I have very high regard for The Virginian. My wife stayed in their skilled nursing facility for about 50 days. The service was good and the meals were terrific. They fed my wife along with the other residents of the skilled nursing facility the same menu as the residents who were fed on independent living and assisted living areas of the facility. The staff was outstanding. They published a calendar of activities and brought them to my wife's attention, but there was no interest. The pricing seemed to be not that bad compared to other senior facilities. I would rank them very highly on the cost side. Given the pricing information on what it would cost, it seemed competitively pretty good. A woman by the name of Lorna, who manages one of the wings of the skilled nursing facility, went out of her way on the day of my wife's discharge from the hospital. This lady kept her office open till about 7:15 in the evening to ensure that my wife could be fully checked in. But that was just one of many, many five-star things that the skilled nursing facility did for my wife while she was there."

"I went to a place called Goodwin House because I knew somebody who lived there. I thought it was very nice. I did get to eat there, and the food was very good. The marketing people were very accommodating. The apartment at the independent living was very nice. It was not as large as the one in the other place I looked, but it was adequate. I saw their activity calendar. They had aerobics, a pool, and crafts. I liked the lobby, and the dining area was very nice. "

"My parents have been living in Greenspring. The staff is friendly. They have a two-bedroom apartment, which is just perfect for what they need. They have a lot of activities available to them, but if you want to take a class, you have to pay for it. One meal a day is included with their dues. The people who live there seem to be very happy. But it's too costly. If you have to go to assisted living, that triples your price. They pay $3000 a month, and they get one meal even if they already haves owned and paid for their place. No appreciation when you no longer need the apartment, but they give you back your original investment minus the apartment cost.  They have a weight room/exercise facility available to the residents. The dining facility is fine, and the food is excellent. "

"I visited this assisted living facility several times to interview some of the residents for a study about seniors. I was a graduate student at the time and interviewed seniors throughout Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. Some Goodwin House residents had elected to participate in the study. Goodwin House was one of my favorite places to visit because there was a great sense of community between the residents there. Most of them lived independently, having their own apartments with the convenience of meal preparation, maid and medical services. The apartments were very nice, especially on the top floors. Many of the residents I interacted with had packed schedules since Goodwin House offers several activities. A few of the residents chose not to be so social and they had the option to spend more time in their own apartments. The facility is close to several stores and the surrounding area felt pretty safe. There was one floor that exclusively housed nursing home residents. This floor didn't feel like a typical nursing home to me because it was connected to such a large assisted living facilty and nursing home residents had access to several of the resources assisted living facilty community residents did. If I had to choose an assisted living facility for a loved one or myself I would choose Goodwin House. "

"Mom has been at Greenspring for rehab. It’s a very good community. What I like about this facility is that it is very clean with very supportive people. The nurses were good at what they do, and they were attentive as well. Their food is also good. In their cafeteria, you get to sit with whoever you want to sit rather than being assigned. Mom seemed to have a lot of enjoyment being there. "

"My father lived at Heatherwood for 15 months, arriving just prior to the Covid shutdowns. The activities schedule was full of interesting and exciting offerings, the exercise machines were soon to be available in a dedicated room...so much to do for social and physical engagement. Understandably, Heatherwood locked down tight once Covid hit and policies were established to keep residents safe. I have nothing but good things to say about Heatherwood. The apartments are very clean and roomy with plenty of storage, and contain a full kitchen. Every staff member I engaged with was helpful and courteous... not insignificant given the times we were in. There has been a recent changeover in Executive Director, and both individuals were attentive to my family's concerns and questions, and engaged with residents. Dad's medical appointments and needs were well coordinated by the staff there. Extra therapies (speech) were suggested and tips for the family were given. I can't thank everyone individually who cared for my Dad, but my sisters and I all felt that he was well cared for at Heatherwood. He moved recently to be near family, but I would not hesitate to recommend Heatherwood as a facility for a loved one."

"My brother is at Burke Health & Rehabilitation Center. The care seems good. They seemed to be attentive. The food is OK. The OT and PT are very good. They seem to be adequately staffed, which is something that's kind of unusual in the rehab facilities that we've been in in the past. I can generally find somebody and they come in pretty quickly. It seems to be older, but it's clean."

"This facility treated my great-grandfather with the upmost respect. The staff was very friendly and treated all of us like family. They even had a cat that would wonder the floor, or building I should say. It was just a stray cat and when asked about it they said that the residents really enjoyed it so they didn't want to put it out. "

"Arleigh Burke Pavilion was a very nice and very nicely run place. It was more focused on assisted living rather than the skilled nursing I was looking for. The grounds and location were very nice. The rooms were an average size. There was some musical activity going on while I was there. I think it's a great place to get into for assisted living and then later on for continuous care. "

"During COVID I received regular updates about infections at Envoy. My relative was in isolation but the staff made sure we spoke or FaceTime regularly. I appreciate the peace of mind. "

"Fairfax Nursing Center looked pretty nice. The people seemed happy and nice. It's clean and orderly. We only met with an admissions person who's actually new to the job, but helpful and friendly. With COVID restrictions, they weren't having any group meals. It looked like they had a nice gym area. The reviews and the government statistics show that they provide a pretty good level of care. There's a low rate of people with bedsores, so they're attentive to that, and the ratio of staff to patients is pretty good. The patients and visitors that we saw looked happy and they were enjoying themselves, so that's a good sign."

"Cherrydale Health Care Center is spacious and I noticed that it has a pleasant smell to it. It doesn't have a nursing home smell to it. I found it to be clean, and my husband's room is spacious with a big window. It's a private room, too. The staff has been very friendly. I don't think they have enough to take care of the patients the way that families would want them to, but none of the facilities ever do. Overall, I think they're doing a pretty good job. I'm pleased with Cherrydale Health Care Center. I'm also pleased with the staff that I can call when I'm not there, and they'll take the phone to my husband. I'm pleased that when I call and tell them who I am, they know who he is. My husband has been on speech, occupational and physical therapy, but not as much as I would like it, especially the physical therapy. I think they're making progress though. I think it's just the staffing issues with all the facilities. Regarding meals, my husband is not missing meals, so he has gotten stronger being there. The food looks good, but I have no idea what it tastes like."

"I refer to the Woodbine staff as the "Wonderful Woodbiners"! These wonderful and caring women and men are generous, patient, selfless and loving. During this pandemic craziness, they have put their heads together to come up with creative solutions to keep the patients and residents engaged and as happy as possible. This is a daunting task and requires an awful lot of energy, creativity, endurance, patience and perseverance, because many of these patients are used to have daily or frequent visitors and many are in the memory care unit, like our mother. The Wonderful Woodbiners are so sensitive to this plight that they keep their eyes peeled for any signs of depression or sadness, so they can alert the doctors and practitioners to avoid such moods to get out of hand. They also set up a platform for family and friends to send videos, emails, photos and other means of communication to their loved ones that benefits both the patients and their families, because the WW's realize that this affects both sides. I cannot speak highly enough of Woodbine and its wonderful staff. God bless them abundantly. As my mother always said when people act with selflessness for their fellow man: "You're earning jewels on your crown!" Well, our wonderful woodbiners must have a difficult time walking from the weight of their crown!"
