Reston, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C., was recently ranked 29th on Money Magazine’s list of the best places to live in America. The city’s green spaces contribute to its high ranking; Reston has numerous parks, lakes and golf courses. There are also more than 50 miles of pathways that were purposely designed to ensure most residents would not have to walk more than a half-mile to get to any village center.
Reston offers numerous opportunities for dining and shopping, and for arts and culture opportunities, residents can take the Metrorail to downtown Washington. Seniors who decide to age in place here will be in good company: nearly 15% of the city’s approximately 58,400 residents are seniors.
Compared to national average prices, Reston’s senior home care agencies are relatively expensive. The U.S. average cost of homemaker services is $4,004 per month, while in Reston, seniors pay an average of $4,290 per month —both for 44 hours of care per week. Home health aides are also pricier in Reston ($4,458) than the national average ($4,195), notes Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Reston area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Our goal is to provide our clients a chance to live or recover and happily manage
healthier lives at home.

You determine the hours of care you need and we will work with you to meet your
individual needs, in other words we do not advocate for a one size fits all model.

are more than happy to accommodate you.

We are probably the most affordable in the region for a fully licensed, insured and
bonded agency, letting you enjoy affordable care and peace of mind. We keep
our expenses low by not running expensive advertisement campaigns and this
allows us to save you money.

Our contracts are simple with no long term commitments and we will even let you
try us for a week with no strings attached.

Our caregivers go through an extensive health and background checks and are

We are willing to accommodate you if you are in need of a caregiver with certain
language requirements.

We require our caregivers to be COVID free and perform testing as warranted.

I’m using HomeCare.com. It’s fine. They’re very good and very responsive to any concerns I have, and they’ve provided me with a good health care aide, not great necessarily, but good. They also provide light housekeeping, they help me clean myself up, and they take me to my appointment. They get here within a certain time window between 7 and 7:30, and that’s when I need them here. A lot of times my communication is directly with the aides. If she can’t come on a certain day, the agency would contact me to see whether I need some assistance or need somebody to fill me in on a given day. I think I’m paying more than I probably should because they have a mandatory number of days that I can contract for, and that’s probably more than I usually need. To maintain the contract, I have to keep them on a certain number of days.

I worked with Comfort Keepers for my mother for over a year. We had a hands-down excellent experience with them. We hired them as in-home care from 11 a.m. until after dinner. The caregiver would come in at 11, prepare lunch for my mom, do light housework and entertain her. They were just wonderful and they were sweet to her. They took care of the medical appointment she had, they managed her medication, and they made dinner for her. They stayed with her through dinner and put the breakfast in the refrigerator for her so that when she wakes up in the morning, she could get into the kitchen and make herself a cup of coffee and have a little breakfast. It worked out beautifully for quite awhile until her health started failing. That’s what Jennifer, our caregiver, provided for us when we were using her through Comfort Keepers. She really was eyes and ears for the family because none of her children live in the Virginia area. We really needed someone to organize everything. She watched the house, she watched the mails, she watched the meds, she watched my mother, she took care of grocery shopping, she did all of her driving for her and took her everywhere. She was a lifesaver. In terms with working the administration, they were very good, too. We went through 3 or 4 different women before we landed on Jennifer, but they worked really hard to find the right kind of match for my mom and made sure that the caregiver was what my mother was comfortable with. She became part of the family over the course of the year.

Reston Home Care Resources
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Reston:
Address: 1141 Elden St. Ste. 200, Herndon, VA 20170
Phone: (571) 267-2977
This non-profit organization provides emergency financial assistance to low-income residents of Herndon and Reston. Seniors can receive help with rent, utilities and other urgent bills, and this assistance can help them remain in their own homes. This funding is paid directly to landlords, utility companies and other providers. Seniors who are interested in this program need a referral from a Fairfax County social worker.
Address: 10455 White Granite Dr., Ste. 100, Oakton, VA 22124
Phone: (571) 748-2500
This program is offered by Northern Virginia Family Service, a non-profit organization that serves low-income people in Fairfax County. Seniors who are facing housing crises can receive grants to stay in their homes. These grants may be used for utilities, rent and security deposits. To receive assistance from this program, seniors need to get a referral from Coordinated Services Planning.
Address: 11150 Sunset Hills Rd., Ste. 210, Reston, VA 20190
Phone: (571) 323-9555
A nonprofit organization, Cornerstones offers a few programs that may be useful for seniors. The organization delivers fresh food and non-perishable items to food-insecure seniors. It also offers utility bill relief assistance in the form of one payment per season; this payment is limited to the amount needed to keep or restore service. Another program is foreclosure prevention counseling. This can help seniors avoid foreclosure and remain in their homes. Cornerstones’ clients must be referred by Coordinated Services Planning.
Address: 12000 Government Center Pkwy., Fairfax, VA 22035
Phone: (703) 324-5409
Seniors who aren’t able to prepare their own meals can receive home-delivered meals through the Fairfax Area Meals on Wheels program. The service operates on weekdays, and depending on seniors’ addresses, they can receive food deliveries daily or three times a week. Vegetarian and Vietnamese meals are available. Seniors may be asked to contribute toward the cost of the meals.
Address: 11484 Washington Plaza W., 4th Fl., Reston, VA 20190
Phone: (703) 324-4328
The Department of Family Services offers an Energy Assistance program that may help seniors pay for heating and cooling costs. Seniors can receive assistance with heating costs, furnace installation charges, connection fees and other costs associated with heating their homes. Cooling costs, including the purchase and repair of air conditioning units, may also be provided.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
