Sterling Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Sterling:

Loudoun County Area Agency on Aging

This a central point of contact for seniors and their families with many useful resources, including caregivers. The agency is state-funded and connects seniors in Sterling and Loudoun County with a variety of public programs and charities that can help those who have limited resources, including housing assistance, caregiver respite and help to pay utilities or rent. Case managers are on hand to help seniors apply for benefits for which they may be eligible or to help them navigate online registration for healthcare and other needs. Seniors also have the opportunity to connect with others, preventing isolation.

Emergency Home Repair and Accessibility Grant

This agency is part of the Loudoun County Department of Family Services. It provides monies to make necessary repairs or retrofitting for greater accessibility and offers a one-time grant of up to $5,000. These funds can also be used for emergency repairs. It’s income-based, using the HUD guidelines. This program differs from other housing programs, as it’s a monetary grant, and not public construction overseen by a licensed contractor.

Affordable Dwelling Unit Program

Address: 1 Harrison St. SE, Leesburg, VA 20175
Phone: (703) 777-0100

Loudoun County sponsors this program, offering grants and financial assistance to those who qualify for low-cost housing. This includes seniors on a fixed income. The program also helps seniors, who aren’t in a position to purchase a home, to find a rental they can afford. Space is limited, although there is a waiting list. It’s income-based and uses the HUD guidelines for housing assistance.

Loudoun County Salvation Army

Address: 10 Cardinal Park Drive SE, Leesburg, VA 20175
Phone: (703) 771-3371

The county Salvation Army is part of a nationwide organization that relies on volunteers and donations, although they offer a wide range of services. For seniors who need clothing or other household goods, this facility has a thrift store on-premises. There are also caseworkers who can help seniors connect with other resources in the area or find social opportunities, including volunteering for those that are able.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
