"We visited Sunrise of Vienna right after they opened. The community only had a few residents at the time we visited. The facility is absolutely beautiful. It is a five-star, modern, gorgeous hotel. It's really pretty. My mother-in-law prefers an older-style Sunrise or the more homey-style assisted living. However, for me and my husband, if we had been looking for ourselves, it's what we would have picked. They outdid themselves on just being a beautiful facility. They have pretty, nicely laid-out apartments. There are different views and stuff like that. It was just really nice. For the common areas, there were little outdoor patios. The staff was outstanding and very knowledgeable. We did not try the food, but the dining area was upscale and nicely done. However, even though I've been raving about it, there were only a couple of residents, so we didn't get to see the community as it would come together."

"I visited Arden Courts and they were only for Alzheimer's and dementia, so no regular assisted living. They're entirely focused on memory care, therefor the building, the structure and the layout are all set up just to make it easier for people with dementia to get around so that's a plus. The staff seemed great, really great and seemed knowledgeable for caring for people with dementia. The only drawback was they had small bedrooms and the bathroom was a sink and a toilet but no shower. It was like a dorm with one shower on a wing and I did not like that because my mom needs to be closed to the toilet and the shower and I didn't want her traipsing down the hallway in a bathroom and taking a shower where men are showering, so that was the main reason to not go with them. It was cute, it was just one level with four different wings, and they made it so that people with dementia could walk outside, they felt like they were walking outside but the whole place was fenced in but they wouldn't feel like they were fenced in. They would feel like they had the ability to go outside. It was really nice. They can improve by putting showers in the rooms. "

"Advent Care is like a house in a neighborhood. It's a nice idea, but it wasn't quite what my aunt needed in terms of the bathroom being accessible. I think it would have been difficult for her to get around the house in a wheelchair. The lady was very helpful. Even when she knew that we weren't going to be able to do private pay, she shared resources with us on how to get financial help to try to get her into a comfortable situation. She even followed up with me later and sent me websites and stuff. It has two rooms, one has two beds, and the other only has one bed. She said her family lives there at the house, and there was a dog, which I know my aunt wouldn't like. She said that when her husband and her child are home, they help. She prepares meals, which is nice. My mom went with me, and she is in her 60s. She does have knee problems, and she had a hard time getting around. There wasn't a railing on the front step. There wasn't a ramp. She had to use the bathroom, and she had a hard time getting up off the toilet because there weren't the handicap bars where they needed to be. I wasn't comfortable with it. It is not well-equipped for someone who can't walk on their own. If they can get up and walk around, it is a nice little house, and meals are made from scratch. They had chairs and stuff outside, but it was a question of how to get them out there. There's no ramp. The lady said that they encourage them to be out and about, and they have TVs in the family room. She was very helpful, even knowing that we weren't going to be able to give them our business. She still continued to offer support, health websites, things like that to help us find a place and offered to even take my aunt temporarily for a lower price if we couldn't find a place for her to live, like if we couldn't get the Medicaid thing settled. She was a very, very nice lady. It was more physical equipment-wise that was questionable. The food looked good, like homemade fresh vegetables, chicken, that kind of thing."

"We toured Sunrise of McLean. It was a positive experience. They're still undergoing some renovation, but there was not a problem. The people were very welcoming. We liked the environment. We looked at a studio. It's not that large, but it would be adequate. The director of sales, Jessica, took us on a tour, explained everything to us, and did an excellent job. The dining area was somewhat under renovation, but it'd be more than fine. There's a lot of arts and crafts type of stuff, movies, and other things going on. We didn't pay a lot of attention to it though. The nurse is going to come out on Monday and evaluate my wife for assisted living or memory care. If she's memory care, she's on the third floor, and it's a much more restrictive environment. If she's in assisted living, she could be on floors 1, 2, or 4 and it's different."

"My husband and I are going to be moving to The Trillium Tysons for independent living. I think it's the best. Everything's around there; it's the 10th floor, which thrills us, and we got a corner unit, so we get sun and light on both sides. It's beautiful and surpassed my expectations. I saw pictures of it first on the internet, so I expected it to be nice, but when we walked in there, we were awed. I'm having the master bedroom and master bath changed to be the color of our bedroom now because it's the most soothing color. They said they would have done the whole apartment if we wanted. They also said if we wanted to have the closet organizers we have in our house, they could do that for us. They're also going to put grab bars in the shower because that's very important to me. As it is right now, they don't have a door in the shower, so we're getting glass doors in the shower, which they're doing for us, too. The lady who worked with us was as patient as could be. She drew things out for us, answered every question we had, and said that if we had any further questions, we should not hesitate to call. She has the sweetest personality so I just love her. When I came in, I said we've been driving around, and the coffee is horrible. She went and got us a latte during the meeting. If that's an indication of what the service will be like, then I'd rate them highly. She is outstanding. The place is conveniently located near everything, with all the stores and doctors around. That's if you want to go outside, because you don't have to. Everything is already there for you. I would say within a square mile, you have banks, hairdressers, and a movie theater. It's like a village unto itself. You have a choice of a 20-meal package or a 30-meal package. We took the 20-meal package because we like to eat out a lot, and there are a lot of restaurants around there, too. The 20-meal package means you get at least one meal a day. The person we are working with said most people go for dinner because it's a big, fancy meal. They have a Michelin chef there, too. She did say that if you went beyond your 20 or 30 meals, you could get a card and you could pay for it."

"I toured Home Eldercare. The staff was pretty nice and tried to let us know what to expect there and what service they would provide. However, the only thing is that the living conditions are a little bit different than what we expected. Two people will share one unit, and the bathroom is quite tight. I'm a little concerned about sending my mom there, and that's the only thing, but the staff seemed willing to help."

"The Providence Fairfax has excellent facilities. It's very well maintained and very well cared for. The proximity is close to my sister, my nephew, and my nieces. So, we could have a lot of family support for my father. Our move-in experience was very good. People are very welcoming and the residents are also very welcoming and they socialize. It's a good location. There's plenty of parking for the families and things like that. They have an excellent chef. The main thing that my father is doing right now is physical therapy, which he likes, but they also have different outing trips. Sometimes they have activities where people come in and play the piano or do some musical activities. There's movie night and when the weather's nice and you want to sit outside, there is a rooftop. Some amenities are available for whoever wants to participate. The facilities are very clean and very well laid out. My father has a one bedroom so there's enough space. He has a nice size bedroom, a comfortable living room, a kitchen, and elevator access. They also provide laundry service and cleaning services. So, they clean once a week and do laundry once a week. Internet and utilities are provided. It's only ten minutes from the hospital just in case of emergencies. The staff has been very helpful, very friendly, and very supportive. It's like staying in a five-star hotel. The food is excellent. It is very expensive but they provide the services that you need. In the Fairfax, Virginia area, everything there was expensive so that's just what's in the area."

"When I visited The Virginian, I was struck by the cleanliness. The staff were very kind and nice. They understood every needs of the residents. The rooms were all clean. I hoped they hire more multilingual staff. "

"Mom is at Sunrise of Fairfax. We chose that place for her because it is close to where the family lives. They also offered a special 20 percent discount on their room, so there was an incentive involved. Mom is in a studio. It's got a beautiful view and it's brand new. They are just having difficulties hooking up the telephone in the room, but the staff seems great. I've gone to lunch and dinner and the food was good. The service though is a bit slow (if you're on a prime schedule). There's been folks singing Christmas carols (twice she participated in that) and there's an activities coordinator that's been letting her know that there's activities going on. So, she's been trying to get my mom involved. For the area, it's a good value."
