The 10 Best Memory Care Facilities in Reston, VA for 2024

Reston is a city in the Washington D.C. metro area with a population of 62,453, roughly 15.7% of which is aged 65 or older. The Alzheimer's Association reports that one in nine Americans in this age group lives with some type of cognitive issue, underscoring the importance of good dementia care for the area. Alzheimer's can have serious implications, but the CDC reports that even though statewide deaths from Alzheimer's rose 24.22% between 2016 and 2020, they dropped by 1% in the Reston area during that same period.

Typically located within larger assisted living communities, memory care units provide their residents with a safe environment and round-the-clock care by a specialized staff. In addition to providing assistance with the activities of daily living, they promote activities that are beneficial to those with any type of memory loss. Caregivers train to help seniors keep at bay the anxiety and frustration that may accompany memory loss.

Read on to learn more about the pros and cons of living in the Reston area, the cost of memory care and programs that provide additional benefits and services.

What to Consider About Memory Care in Reston

The Virginia Department of Social Services oversees the licensing of assisted living and memory care communities, as well as adult day care centers. It also regularly monitors facilities to ensure they're keeping up with federal and local regulations and standards regarding staff orientation and training, reports of neglect and the safeguarding of residents' funds.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in Reston

  • Health care is easily accessible to area seniors. The city is home to the Reston Hospital Center, and there are four additional hospitals within 10 miles. The United States has an average of 210 physicians per 100,000 people, but Reston far exceeds that at 299 doctors per 100,000. Of those physicians, more than 30 have a specialty in geriatrics, and close to 10 specialize in treating those with Alzheimer's.
  • Reston's climate makes it ideal for those who enjoy warm summers and mild winters. The area enjoys an average of 197 sunny days per year, which offers residents plenty of opportunities for outdoor walks and other activities. Summer temperatures top off at around 86 degrees, while winter lows rarely dip to lower than 24 degrees. Though Reston sees snow in the winter, it averages just 22 inches per year, which is less than the national average.
  • On a 100-point scale, the cost of living in Reston is 137.4, which is higher than the state's rating of 104.2 and the country's rating of 100. The high costs are most likely due to the city's proximity to Washington, D.C., which is less than 25 miles away. It's also primarily driven by the cost of housing, which is almost double the national and state averages. Fortunately, this usually wouldn't apply to those who reside in a memory care community.
  • As far as crime rates go, the Reston area is reasonably safe. On a scale of 100, the area's violent crime rate is just 19.6, which is much lower than the national average of 22.7. Property crimes, however, rank at 43.2, which is far higher than the country's rating of 35.4. These types of crimes shouldn't impact those who live in memory care communities, which usually put a high priority on safety.
  • The median age for Reston's diverse population of over 60,000 is close to 40 years old, and more than half the population is married. This indicates a relatively quiet community where seniors should feel at home.

Paying For Memory Care in Reston

Note: Residential memory care is usually offered in assisted living facilities, and in general, memory care rates tend to be 20-30% higher than assisted living rates.
