"When I went to Hunters Woods at Trails Edge, they were not serving food. The entire facility, every floor that I was on to get to the floor that we needed, had a very good smell. It was decorated beautifully. I met several staff members and they were very, very friendly. They even would explain to me what they did and then I met with one staff person who was in charge of most of the activities that were going on. I was given a calendar and invited to bring my husband back for a free trial. He could just pick an activity and just let them know he was coming and he could come and try out some of the free activities. I thought it was good. I met the manager who was over the top. It was like you were in a five-star hotel. The rooms that were available for him had everything in it that he needed. It had a very nice bed, a dresser, an attached bathroom, and all the things that he needed were there. The staff was friendly and very pleasant. They were glad to tell me, "This is what I do in the facility and this is my job." They were willing to discuss what their position was and how they helped the patients that were there."

"I’ve been touring assisted living communities in Florida and now in Northern Virginia for the past six months to place first my parents and now my mother-in-law in just the right community. Not all assisted living communities are the same, and what I’ve learned is to watch the interactions of the staff (including the person giving you a tour) with the residents. I’ve now toured eight communities in the Vienna, McLean, and Reston/Herndon area, and the Residence at Colvin Run stands out among them all! Most all the communities I’ve toured were warm and welcoming, but it was The Residence at Colvin Run where the salesperson, receptionist, caregivers, and dining room staff I saw greeted everyone by name and had at least a short smiling conversation with each. It’s that sort of warmth and caring you can’t fake and that is vitally important to ensuring you or your parent/family member will be happy in their new home. Thumbs way up to The Residence at Colvin Run!"

"Georges Assisted Living is an absolutely beautiful community. What stood out to me was that the place was very open and inviting. The residents were engaged, talking to each other, and sitting in the living rooms. I met the owner. It was after 10:00 when I was there and she was extremely pleasant and talked to me about the residents. The rooms were beautiful. The nurses were extremely pleasant, including the people preparing the food (they were very friendly). It was the best place I have seen and I'm very impressed with it."

"I visited Arden Courts and they were only for Alzheimer's and dementia, so no regular assisted living. They're entirely focused on memory care, therefor the building, the structure and the layout are all set up just to make it easier for people with dementia to get around so that's a plus. The staff seemed great, really great and seemed knowledgeable for caring for people with dementia. The only drawback was they had small bedrooms and the bathroom was a sink and a toilet but no shower. It was like a dorm with one shower on a wing and I did not like that because my mom needs to be closed to the toilet and the shower and I didn't want her traipsing down the hallway in a bathroom and taking a shower where men are showering, so that was the main reason to not go with them. It was cute, it was just one level with four different wings, and they made it so that people with dementia could walk outside, they felt like they were walking outside but the whole place was fenced in but they wouldn't feel like they were fenced in. They would feel like they had the ability to go outside. It was really nice. They can improve by putting showers in the rooms. "

"I really liked Tribute at Black Hill, and I was hoping it would be the one that we would pick. I saw an apartment, and it was very nice. I really liked the woman who assisted me with the tour, and I just really enjoyed seeing the building. It was beautiful. They had a salon, an art studio, and walking paths around the building. They had a place where you could get coffeeand sit and chat. There were places that you could go just to have your lunch downstairs if you don't want to go to the dining room. There's a menu that's different every day, but there's also a standard menu. They would monitor medication and they would provide transportation."

"I toured this home Its very immaculaty clean, residents looked happy and engaged in activities.. Owner is a RN and was very knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. References from current family members was praises of the owner of the great care and programming that they provide. Unfortunately my mother passed away a week before her move in.. "

"Advent Care is like a house in a neighborhood. It's a nice idea, but it wasn't quite what my aunt needed in terms of the bathroom being accessible. I think it would have been difficult for her to get around the house in a wheelchair. The lady was very helpful. Even when she knew that we weren't going to be able to do private pay, she shared resources with us on how to get financial help to try to get her into a comfortable situation. She even followed up with me later and sent me websites and stuff. It has two rooms, one has two beds, and the other only has one bed. She said her family lives there at the house, and there was a dog, which I know my aunt wouldn't like. She said that when her husband and her child are home, they help. She prepares meals, which is nice. My mom went with me, and she is in her 60s. She does have knee problems, and she had a hard time getting around. There wasn't a railing on the front step. There wasn't a ramp. She had to use the bathroom, and she had a hard time getting up off the toilet because there weren't the handicap bars where they needed to be. I wasn't comfortable with it. It is not well-equipped for someone who can't walk on their own. If they can get up and walk around, it is a nice little house, and meals are made from scratch. They had chairs and stuff outside, but it was a question of how to get them out there. There's no ramp. The lady said that they encourage them to be out and about, and they have TVs in the family room. She was very helpful, even knowing that we weren't going to be able to give them our business. She still continued to offer support, health websites, things like that to help us find a place and offered to even take my aunt temporarily for a lower price if we couldn't find a place for her to live, like if we couldn't get the Medicaid thing settled. She was a very, very nice lady. It was more physical equipment-wise that was questionable. The food looked good, like homemade fresh vegetables, chicken, that kind of thing."

"The Trillium Tysons is brand new. It just opened in August. So, it's only about a third occupied. The person who took us around and was responsible for us was fantastic. She did an extraordinarily good job answering all of our questions and being very patient. Because it's only about a third occupied, we were able to see a number of the apartments that we were interested in (that's both a positive and a negative). We didn't interact a lot with any of the residents, although whoever we did, seemed to be very pleasant. The staff that was there was extremely helpful, and courteous, and even solicited what we were interested in, where, and why. The price was quite high. It's a monthly rental, but they said that that's what they were focusing on. They wanted to be at the high end. It being brand new, there wasn't too much to find fault with, and it's one of those that we would probably go back in another couple of years to see if we're interested, and to see how it established itself. We looked at both one and two-bedroom apartments. The two-bedroom apartments were the ones that we were focusing on. We thought that they were well constructed and most of them were comfortably laid out. There was one that we didn't like, but we saw three two-bedroom apartments and two of them were satisfactory. We saw a large one-bedroom apartment that certainly if we were only one person, would be more than adequate."

"I toured Home Eldercare. The staff was pretty nice and tried to let us know what to expect there and what service they would provide. However, the only thing is that the living conditions are a little bit different than what we expected. Two people will share one unit, and the bathroom is quite tight. I'm a little concerned about sending my mom there, and that's the only thing, but the staff seemed willing to help."
