"We toured Harmony at Chantilly. My wife and I met a nice young lady. She explained the costs in the boardroom and answered our questions. She's very knowledgeable about pets, deposits required, and meal or no meal plan. So, we got a good idea of that, including the activities at the center and how many units there are. Then she took us on a tour of a one-bedroom with a den and a two-bedroom unit, which was very nice. She showed us all the areas from the exercise room to the theater and dining room. So, we saw all four floors of independent living. We were very well-informed when we left, and it is a very nice place. One thing we have to consider seriously is the cost. It is one of the more expensive ones. If you include all in with the meal plan, parking, and cable, you're looking at over $8,100 a month."

"Everyone at The Ridge at Sterling was especially friendly. They let us have lunch on our tour and the food was wonderful. The facility is going through a renovation. They've made really good choices with the materials they've chosen. Its flooring is good for walkers and wheelchairs. The coloring is nice, light, and friendly in appearance. The design of the building is nice and spacious. The rooms are big with nice windows. The dining area was a lot like a restaurant. It was nicely decorated for Christmas. Everyone was positive like the staff interacting with the residents. It was a very positive environment. Everything seemed nice."

"I liked Wingler House. The apartment was pretty nice. The bathroom was a little small, and the kitchen was a little small, but it had a pantry for the kitchen, which I liked. The person who toured me was fine, but not very pleasant. They had more activities than some of the others, like exercise classes. They also had vans that go places."

"My husband and I are going to be moving to The Trillium Tysons for independent living. I think it's the best. Everything's around there; it's the 10th floor, which thrills us, and we got a corner unit, so we get sun and light on both sides. It's beautiful and surpassed my expectations. I saw pictures of it first on the internet, so I expected it to be nice, but when we walked in there, we were awed. I'm having the master bedroom and master bath changed to be the color of our bedroom now because it's the most soothing color. They said they would have done the whole apartment if we wanted. They also said if we wanted to have the closet organizers we have in our house, they could do that for us. They're also going to put grab bars in the shower because that's very important to me. As it is right now, they don't have a door in the shower, so we're getting glass doors in the shower, which they're doing for us, too. The lady who worked with us was as patient as could be. She drew things out for us, answered every question we had, and said that if we had any further questions, we should not hesitate to call. She has the sweetest personality so I just love her. When I came in, I said we've been driving around, and the coffee is horrible. She went and got us a latte during the meeting. If that's an indication of what the service will be like, then I'd rate them highly. She is outstanding. The place is conveniently located near everything, with all the stores and doctors around. That's if you want to go outside, because you don't have to. Everything is already there for you. I would say within a square mile, you have banks, hairdressers, and a movie theater. It's like a village unto itself. You have a choice of a 20-meal package or a 30-meal package. We took the 20-meal package because we like to eat out a lot, and there are a lot of restaurants around there, too. The 20-meal package means you get at least one meal a day. The person we are working with said most people go for dinner because it's a big, fancy meal. They have a Michelin chef there, too. She did say that if you went beyond your 20 or 30 meals, you could get a card and you could pay for it."

"I toured Hessler Heights Gracious Retirement Living. What I like best is the food service, the housekeeping, the beauty of the facility, and the proximity to walking trails. What I liked the least was that too many people were using walkers. Terry is very charismatic, genuine, and good to work with. The other staff members I met were all very genuine and kind people. I studied their menu, and I was impressed by it. They had snacks provided, and I had a delicious apple. The decor was beautiful, and I love the fact that they have a gym. It doesn't have everything I would want in a gym, but they have a gym that is good for people who use walkers. The size of the rooms was adequate, probably more than I expected. The layout was very good, with a very spacious feeling."

"Greenbrier Assisted Living was a single-family home that has been fitted for senior living, and it was very clean and very nice on the inside. The woman that I spoke to was also very nice. They've got 6 or 8 rooms and they all looked well taken care of. They had a nice sunroom area with a TV and a patio area with a grill."

"The Virginian was very nice, but we thought it was a little expensive. It's a beautiful facility. They had great facilities, too. They're just really wonderful. However, we were not happy with the floor plans we looked at. They had a small kitchen area, but we need a little bit more kitchen space than that. They don't have cottages; they're just apartments. The activities were great. They had a beautiful range of activities. The staff was very nice and very accommodating. We enjoyed our visit there, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. It's a couple of thousand a month more than most of the places we looked at. I would love to be there. However, it's a little far away from where we wanted to be. It's half an hour from the doctors, which is not good."

"My 86 year old mother was at Chesterbrook Residences for 9 month before she died peacefully in her sleep from heart problems. She loved Chesterbrook Residences, her apartment, the people there who became her friends and the many diverse activities. I am so glad we found Chesterbrook Residences and we are only sorry we had not found it sooner!"

"I found the Paragon Assisted Living Potomac House Communities for my father. It's a group home. He moved in and he loves it -- the best place he's ever lived. This was perfect for him. The staff is great, my father feels very special there, it's very small, only eight residents, so it's very individualized. It's like they really care. He has the same, consistent people all the time. They have a chef who comes in every day and prepares the food. It's a brand-new facility, it's not even a year old. It's well-maintained. They clean the room every day. They have nice, big, open hallways. They have minimal activities, and they could probably do better for people who have the ability to do stuff. They're a great alternative to a bigger facility."

"Paramount Senior Living at Manassas is a two-story, but the memory care is in one place. It has its own dining and its own craft room and so forth. You can go there and take your loved one out for a walk. They have a perimeter walking path that people can go on. I didn't notice that there was fencing or anything, but the memory care section is locked, so no one could go out of that but I could take my husband out and walk with him. He couldn't just go out on his own and walk. They have their own staff, their own food, their own dining, their own craft and art place, entertainment, and things like that. They provide furniture which the other places don't. The rooms are well-appointed. The beds, the dresser, and the closet are all neat and nice. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and seemed very caring."

"The Fairmont by Barclay House is all independent living; they don't have assisted living there, but I guess they have nursing staff available. I like that it is a nice size, and I would rate it high on cleanliness because it was very nice. They are renovating all the rooms, but they're only doing a phase at a time, so there is plenty to look at that is not being renovated. I saw both an older room and a newer room. The person who gave the tour was the overall regional manager because they were training a new manager, and she was very nice and interactive."

"Kentlands Manor is a great place, but it's beyond my price level. The community was gorgeous. The people were very nice and friendly. The property was gorgeous. The apartment was very nice. The only thing I didn't like was the price. I would recommend it to anybody who can afford it. The staff members were excellent. The building was very clean, inside and out. The layout was good. It was very adequate."

"I went to Victory Court Senior Apartments. It was very nice. The woman there was very pleasant. It was a nice visit. The general appearance is very clean and very quiet. Everything was just very spotless. I had a chance to meet one or two of the residents. They looked very content, as to be expected, slightly bored, but it was nice. The ladies in the office were very friendly and very informative. Most of the units have a kitchen, whether it's a small kitchen or a larger kitchen for the two-or three-bedrooms. They have a common area where they have get-togethers. The rooms are very simple. There are small islands in the kitchens. For the most part, very clean, very modern facilities. When you get to the two- and three-bedroom units, I think you can request that they have a washer and dryer. The amenities are really nice. Everything is very convenient. "

"We toured it. It was lovely. I wish I could live there. It was so beautiful. I thought the facility was great. They did have a special at that time for how much it would cost, which was also great. We learned that with the level of care that they have, they do not put railings on the bed. My father-in-law must have railings on the bed because he cannot move or walk, but he could fall out of bed. The staff was lovely and informative. The structure and cleanliness were excellent. It's only less than five years old. The layout was very nice for someone who can take care of themselves, but if they needed more assistance, the doors seemed to be kind of far away from someone in a bed calling for help, but I'm sure that they've had other measurements, but we just didn't go into it."

"Hillside Senior Apartments is very neat, but the rooms are very small. It can only fit like a full bed. I don't think it can even fit a queen-size bed. I saw a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, and it has the same floor plan. The two-bedroom is smaller due to its size. The room sizes are smaller. Even the living room of the two-bedroom is smaller than the one-bedroom because the second bedroom had to take up space. Otherwise, it was OK. The place was nice, clean, and quiet, which I like. It seemed like everybody was in their apartments, or maybe it's the time of the day that I went there. I went there at midday. The common room was very nice and clean. The staff was very welcoming, kind, and nice. They have a kitchen where, if you decide to make food for your guests, you can host them there and cook for them in that living area instead of taking them to your own apartment. They took us to the laundry room."
