I was there during an event and the residents even said hello! The studio apartment was a bit tight but they had a great 1-bedroom I know my mom will love. That closet!!! And she'll be right near me. "Potomac was very expensive and not affordable for me. The rooms were a little larger than what I saw at the other place, but they had the same activities. They were not willing to help me in making it more affordable. They had a therapy room, a large dining room, and a nice garden area outside. I guess they have to be more accommodating, and they weren’t as friendly as I thought they would be. "

"We've chosen Acclaim at Belmont Bay for my mom. The facility is amazing. It is clean and lively, and there's a good amount of people visibly enjoying their time there. It is also very upscale. The apartments are luxurious. The atmosphere is active and comfortable. They have a lot of activities for the residents there. The most important thing is they provide transportation for appointments within 5 miles. They have a salon, a gym, a pool, a game room, and a dog grooming center."

"The Fairfax is a generally nice place; it's divided into assisted living apartments, which are small but allow residents to have their own furniture, and a more intensive care section, where the atmosphere is more like a hospital but patients are still allowed small pieces of furniture, like bureaus and chairs, and keepsakes. The facilities are always lavishly decorated for the holidays, and residents in both sections often decorate their doors with wreaths or mats. A large cage in the lobby held songbirds the last time I was there, and during Christmas, there's a tree, menorah, and other holiday material on every floor. There are ample parking spots in the lot, and the facility provides a bus to take residents shopping and to church. There is at least one resident cat, and a very nice restaurant on-site. The place doesn't smell like antiseptic or like being in a hospital, although when moving to the more intensive care wing, people are asked to use some hand sanitizer to prevent transmission of disease. There appear to be ample programs to engage residents; although, being that the facility is located on a busy road with bad traffic, they may be the only activities available to older people who are less confident in their driving. "

"I found the Paragon Assisted Living Potomac House Communities for my father. It's a group home. He moved in and he loves it -- the best place he's ever lived. This was perfect for him. The staff is great, my father feels very special there, it's very small, only eight residents, so it's very individualized. It's like they really care. He has the same, consistent people all the time. They have a chef who comes in every day and prepares the food. It's a brand-new facility, it's not even a year old. It's well-maintained. They clean the room every day. They have nice, big, open hallways. They have minimal activities, and they could probably do better for people who have the ability to do stuff. They're a great alternative to a bigger facility."

"My husband and I are going to be moving to The Trillium Tysons for independent living. I think it's the best. Everything's around there; it's the 10th floor, which thrills us, and we got a corner unit, so we get sun and light on both sides. It's beautiful and surpassed my expectations. I saw pictures of it first on the internet, so I expected it to be nice, but when we walked in there, we were awed. I'm having the master bedroom and master bath changed to be the color of our bedroom now because it's the most soothing color. They said they would have done the whole apartment if we wanted. They also said if we wanted to have the closet organizers we have in our house, they could do that for us. They're also going to put grab bars in the shower because that's very important to me. As it is right now, they don't have a door in the shower, so we're getting glass doors in the shower, which they're doing for us, too. The lady who worked with us was as patient as could be. She drew things out for us, answered every question we had, and said that if we had any further questions, we should not hesitate to call. She has the sweetest personality so I just love her. When I came in, I said we've been driving around, and the coffee is horrible. She went and got us a latte during the meeting. If that's an indication of what the service will be like, then I'd rate them highly. She is outstanding. The place is conveniently located near everything, with all the stores and doctors around. That's if you want to go outside, because you don't have to. Everything is already there for you. I would say within a square mile, you have banks, hairdressers, and a movie theater. It's like a village unto itself. You have a choice of a 20-meal package or a 30-meal package. We took the 20-meal package because we like to eat out a lot, and there are a lot of restaurants around there, too. The 20-meal package means you get at least one meal a day. The person we are working with said most people go for dinner because it's a big, fancy meal. They have a Michelin chef there, too. She did say that if you went beyond your 20 or 30 meals, you could get a card and you could pay for it."

"We visited Cascades Village. It was very nice. It looked newer. The tour staff was very nice and helpful. I think they were minimal in activities. It was just a senior apartment. They have a gazebo, a balcony, and a barbecue area. I think the staff said they have a weekly fun bingo event but not much else."

"We went here. They were very thorough. They showed me the facilities. The residents I met when I was walking around inside said that they were happy there and they love the food there. They have a chef and her soup and pastry were very highly praised. They had a small patio area in the back, though the inside was a little bit tighter. They have different levels of care. The places they showed me were vacant. I was told that the residents can bring their own stuff. I particularly looked at a studio and a one-bedroom. The staff during the tour was great and very energetic. She's very new, but she did great. She also called me back and followed up with what I decided. The dining hall looked very nice and very clean. They have a little flower vase on each table. The menu was right by the door. I even have a copy, and they publish that weekly. They're right by Route 7. My first impression of the parking lot was it was a little tight because they share the same entrance with a physical therapy rehab center and that center is very busy. It's a very busy parking lot. If their residents needed any therapy or rehab, it's right across the parking lot and it's very convenient. After rehab, some residents move into their facility."

"I liked Wingler House. The apartment was pretty nice. The bathroom was a little small, and the kitchen was a little small, but it had a pantry for the kitchen, which I liked. The person who toured me was fine, but not very pleasant. They had more activities than some of the others, like exercise classes. They also had vans that go places."

"My mother has very limited vision, so she needed a small environment. She has a very spacious 1-bedroom at Chesterbrook Residences. She moved from a small home, so I was concerned about her ability to adjust to a smaller environment. The apartments are wonderful and she's very comfortable. Given her limited vision, it's really very appropriate for her. I was able to paint the color of our choosing and moved in all the furniture that she wanted. The food is fabulous. My mother raves about the food, especially the soup. It's a stable staff, there's not a lot of turnover, and they're very friendly and very caring. They have trips to the Kennedy Center, to restaurants, the local food market, and shopping trips. There's also movie nights, game nights, exercise classes, and they have people coming in playing the piano or a professional dancer who comes in once a month and dances with the residents. My mom is much happier. "

"It is a smaller place. It's been in service for years, but it's nice, and you get your private room. You get to have a sofa in your room. They have a glass-top table, a refrigerator, and they have everything right there where you can be more comfortable. You could sit at a table if you want to eat in a room and have your own privacy and keep some of your own food there. I was there twice in a year. They have facilities to take you to the doctors, and they take you on trips. It has a huge balcony, and they have picnics every Friday when the weather permits. They have sofas and chairs, comfortable seating, and you can sit out there. The food is very good. I get along with everybody. When they know I'm coming in, the help always runs out, greets me, and hugs me. They're all wonderful to me because I treat them well, and they treat me well. I liked the rooms very much, they've got a beautiful dining area, a sitting room right off in the dining area, they've got a fireplace and a big TV screen and table set up where you can have family in and have your own private meal there with your family. They have a refrigerator there that you could share. They have cooking shows of people that are able to participate in, maybe making cookies or something like that. They had a Christmas tree at Christmastime, and everybody helped decorate it. They decorated according to all the holidays. For the ones confined to the room, they give you activity books, puzzles, crayons, pentel, and a paper case if you want to have notes."

"Hessler Heights has just opened up. They provide just about everything everybody else provides, except they have three meals a day and their price is the cheapest. It is in the area between my son and my daughter, which is very convenient. I only met the people who manage the place and the sales lady; they're both outstanding. They have an exercise area, a movie theater, a very nice cafeteria, and a dining room area. It's very well lit. We ate there once, and the waitresses were very courteous. It was a very positive experience. We put a deposit down on a very nice sizable apartment. We are very pleased with what we got. It's a 2-bedroom, and it has a porch also."

"Another property run by Sunrise. This is a highrise property in Ballston VA. It is located very close to the metro so if urban high rise living is what you are looking for this is a good match. The apartments and furnishings are attractive and the staff is very attentive. The only big downside in my view is the location in that it is right in the center of a very busy part of town. There are lots of activities including trips into downtown DC for events at kennedy center and elsewhere. "
