The Best Nursing Home Communities in Albemarle County, VA

"Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge is a relaxed yet beautiful facility, tastefully decorated but with physical aids for aging adults. It has clear, sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, and stunning sunsets to be viewed from it's upper level apartments. Its meeting rooms on the first floor are top notch with all the latest technology to make it easy for residents and visitors to put on excellent presentations. Some ground floor apartments have doors leading out to their own gardens, and staff is available to help those interested in exotic plants to plant and care for them as needed. There are definitely four seasons in Charlottesville, but most year they are mild. Spring and fall are especially beautiful. Westminster Canterbury is not too far away from the University of Virginia and its Miller Center, where top leaders and authors speak to topics that affect democracy, government and the world. Many of the residents are active in sports, and take advantage of lifelong learning programs offered through the university. "

"My mother was in Albemarle Health & Rehabilitation Center for over a month. The rehab center did not work for my mom. She is 97 years old. When we put her there, we explained to her that she needs to work hard on the rehab part because she fell and broke her hip before. She did not take to it. She wanted to do it, but just did not have strength and she developed some issues while she's there like bed sores. They decided that she is not a candidate to stay there any longer, and they made us move her out to another facility. We were not going to leave her in Albemarle because it was so expensive. Most of the staff are fine. We noticed that they didn not seem to be staffed very well, and they did not have enough people to answer the phone or return phone calls. They have a very strict visitation policy, like zero visitations while my mother was there and we could not visit her at all. My mother said the food was fine. We were paid for by Medicare for her rehab, but to stay and live there would be $9,000 a month. That is pretty strong."

"Grace Health & Rehab just opened up a dementia wing, so they were still in the process of getting things together, but we were there before. The people were very caring and professional; we have no complaints. I would recommend them. It was very clean, and the food was adequate and tasty. The people who worked there were very caring, and I liked them; they have a little Southern charm. It was a mile away. "

"Summit Square is a lovely place. We have several friends that live there so we know quite a bit about it. We went and got some more information and we looked at the variety of accommodations that they have there. The staff was very knowledgeable and very warm. As I said, we have friends that live there and they're very satisfied with this place. I have eaten there many times and it's good. They also do some catering of lunches for civic groups. We had them catered for our group and their food is always good and their menu is always varied. With regards to activities, they did have a bus that takes people to concerts, etc. They just had a Christmas dinner where they could invite a few friends to join in for the meals. They have ongoing card games and I know that people would come in and do performances there. In general, they did have a fairly good variety of activities for their residents. What I like best about this place is its location. It's one of the two closest ones in the area where we live, so it wouldn't be moving at greater distance as some of the other places. Regarding recommendations, I would recommend that they at least consider this place. "

"Avante was very clean. But like most nursing homes they're underpaid and overworked. There were too many people to care for. But I don't blame them. My father had Alzheimer's and he was in the process of getting hospice when he passed. "

"My friend went to Dogwood Village of Orange County for rehab and my overall impression was pretty good. It's a little on the old side and most of the places where the patients were or the seniors were were very cinderblock looking. They had a nice dining room and a nice area where they meet for special occasions. They have special music come in every now and then. They're fairly active in keeping the residents occupied and busy, but they're a little understaffed. When she first went in there, they didn't have a whole lot of food selection for people who have alternate lifestyles (like people who are vegetarians). They hired a cook and it seemed to change a little bit. I didn't have any problems with the staff, but the administration sometimes was a little bit difficult to get things worked out with. The medical staff was good, and so were the in-house doctor and the nurses, the orderlies, and the food staff. The caretakers were very nice."

"At Autumn Care of Madison, the staff was fantastic. The therapists were great. However, the food was terrible, if you were on a bland, soft diet. I need to rate the people separate from the food. Everything was 5, except the food was 1. "

"All I can say Is Wow! Shenandoah Nursing was the best choice for our father. My family began looking for long term care for my father and we've been on Shenandoah's wait list for a long while. I can see now why there Is a wait list. The staff are wonderful, treated each one of my sisters and our father like he was family. They went above and beyond what you would expect to make our father comfortable and he's a particular gentleman to say the least. Everyone there Is happy to be there, staff included and It shows. The director of nursing and her team of nursing staff always made us feel comfortable. Invited us to call or stop in at anytime. What a relief that was to us knowing our father was getting the best care. The facility Is immaculate, food was great and we didn't want for anything while our father was a resident. "My mother was at Louisa Health and Rehab Center. It is very clean, shiny, and it smelled good. It's just over the top. They have a day spa, movie nights, and they have all kinds of activities. However, they could improve on the food. "

"Recently had a friend on unit 2...staff was caring, passionate and really showed their "angel wings". Needs were addressed and questions were never unanswered.
