"I'm at The Oaks at Bartlett. The rooms and the layout are excellent. They are spacious. It has a large bedroom and a comfortable front room. The kitchenette is perfectly laid out for ease of use. The amenities are very comfortable and easy to access from your living quarters and they are top grade. The food is a five-star restaurant quality. The staff is very friendly, accommodating, informative, and a pleasure to work with."

"We toured The Atrium at Oak Crest Residence. We were hoping that that this was where my sister-in-law could go. They had a more controlled situation. We obviously were able to discuss her health needs with the facility, and they were willing to work on her specific situation because they had another resident who had the exact same diagnosis she had. They were willing to help her live independently in an apartment type situation, instead of a memory care situation. There was an understanding between all of us that she probably was being too heavily medicated for her condition, and this is what has caused a lot of her problems. The facility was very nice. It's a not-for-profit. It's not like they're out to get you. They also stated that they work with people towards end-of-life or when money go south. They're not quick to throw you out of the facility. It was quiet, and it looked like a very calming place to be. We looked at the independent area and went to the memory section of the facility. The memory section is an older part of that building. We spent the most of our time in the independent section. The rooms were very nice and very spacious. There were single suites, double suites (for husband and wife or mother and daughter). It had a very nice kind of apartment feel to it or your own little place. It was very clean and very up-to-date. It's a very nice little facility. The manager was the one who spent the time with us to talk about the facility and showed the whole facility and the kind of things that they could do. She was extremely helpful. She gave us a complete booklet with pricing, just everything about the actual facility itself, and about the doctors that come in to the facility. It was very informative. They offer a lot of really great amenities. The two dining rooms that they have were very nice. They have a pub in the lower level of the building. They can go down there and have a meal and hang out with their friends. It's a big opportunity for them to try the dining room or go to the pub and enjoy the meal there. The staff was very informative and very compassionate, and that's a big deal."

"My mom was in a small studio in Brookdale. It was very nice but too pricey for my mom. The dining area was very nice. They had a large menu but only two meals a day. If you wanted to have lunch, you had to pay for it which was disappointing. The other thing that I found interesting was that if I dined there with my mom, they charged me $14 for that visit. They had nice activities, but my mom did not attend most because she had trouble hearing. "

"Had the opportunity to visit this Community for my Dad. We loved the size and the affordability of the apartments. The staff is so friendly and welcoming! My Dad really enjoyed his meal. This is a must see!"

"The Woodlands at Canterfield was beautiful. The apartments were fine, clean, nice, and brand new. We met with several people and they were all very nice and professional. They had a bunch of games going. It's brand new so there were not that many people there yet. We saw people in the lunchroom and it looked very nice. The dining area was beautiful. I didn't eat there. My brother and my mom ate there and they said the food was excellent. We met with several different people and overall everybody was great, but some were better than others."

"What I like best about Encore Village of Schaumburg's independent living is its overall appearance and architecture. I thought that was outstanding. It was very welcoming, very open, and very light-filled. A lot of light comes in, especially in the entryway so it's a very comfortable environment. You feel like you get a real taste of nature from the inside too because there were lots of large plants. The staff was friendly. I don't know if it was from a lack of communication but somehow we weren't expected the day of our visit so there was about a 15 or 20 minutes delay before we could start our tour. The advantage of that was we got to enjoy the open space in the sitting area a little bit longer, which was good. We just expected better organization, though. One of the best things about the staff was the person who showed us around. She was not even fully prepared, she was just called into service, but she was very knowledgeable. She had been in the community for about 14 years so she was very knowledgeable and able to share that with us as we took our tour. They have an exercise area, about 4 different dining areas, and they have some outside areas to tour and enjoy walking around. The community is divided between two main structures and there's a large courtyard that separates them. When the weather's nice, you can walk between them, and when the weather's not nice, you can stay inside and go to any part of the community without going outside. There was no food or meal offered, but I can tell that it smelled pretty good. We got to see the four different dining areas in operation and they seemed very comfortable. One was more formal with white tablecloths and napkins while some were informal where you can go in and order your food and have it right there with TV screens available. One feature I liked about the formal dining area is that you could also order and pick up your meal if you decided you didn't want to eat in a formal atmosphere that day. You could have the meal prepared and then take it back up to your room to enjoy. There's one key area that detracts from the full 5-star rating, and that is that they didn't have many studio apartments to offer. They list the studio as their lowest price quarters available but they didn't have many available to show and it seems that their studios did not compare well, in our opinion, to the studios we saw from other communities. Their one and 2-bedroom facilities were excellent but the studios are $1,200 less than the 1-bedrooms."

"There are two things we didn't like about American House Cedarlake. First, it wasn't out on a street where there's a lot of activity. This was more or less in the boondocks. And the other thing we didn't care for was, they have assisted living, but you deal with the assisted care people separate from the regular people. The place was pretty. The food was very good; we had lunch there. Excellent food. The two ladies who gave the tour were very nice. They explained everything and they answered all our questions. For activities, they had bingo games for the residents. I think they take them out shopping and they go out for lunch once a week. The staff members were very good."

"We visited The Roosevelt at Salt Creek's independent living and as far as I'm concerned, the community had only one drawback and that is that they've just started and will be undergoing some renovation for a while. I was concerned that that could be a disturbance and would make it less attractive and comfortable. You don't know for sure, but that's been my experience with those kinds of things. Other than that, I would give them a high rating in just about everything, including their quarters. I liked their rooms a little bit better than any of the other places we saw. Their staff was quite friendly and knowledgeable. The layout was good and they had outdoor areas too. Their eating arrangement looked good. It looked a little bit more complicated to me than some of the other places, but it still looks like a very nice eating arrangement. The residents also have very good interaction with their staff."

"Spacious rooms, walk in closets and big windows that lets lots of light in. Mother in law enjoys the different options for food and enjoys the activities that happen daily."

"We checked out Concord Place. It was an assisted living, and they said my brother was too much for them because he is blind and he has dementia. However, I thought the place was fantastic, and I thought it would work well for him, but according to the nurses and the guy that we talked to, it was just an assisted living and he would probably need more than that. I knew if I would go to some place, I would like to go there. It had pretty much everything that you would want. The room was perfect, and I thought it was beautiful. It had its own bathroom -- which was very important. It was a nice place. "

"I could not have been more pleased with Franciscan Village. My great aunt was a resident there for 3 years. Each time we would visit, she would show us around and each staff member would say hello to her using her name. This showed me that they cared about her as a person rather than 'just a resident.' She slipped and fell in her apartment and broke her neck and was in the hospital for quite a while. The staff send her a card signed by everyone and it really brightened her days. After returning, she was self conscious of the way she looked with her neck brace and the sound she made when she ate and didn't want to leave her room. Staff members would come up to visit with her and try to get her to overcome her fears. It put our minds at ease knowing that she was being well take care of when we could not be there with her. "

"It was smaller and quieter than other places. The people seemed nice. However, it didn't have memory care. Once we found out that they didn't, we didn't even finish the tour."
