I am writing this on behalf of my mom (the client). We had Home Instead for a few years for my dad. When he passed, my mom did not want to be without HIS Caregivers! She had developed a sweet relationship with them and wanted that to continue (of course she also had her own needs for a Caregiver by then 🙂 Home Instead has matched Caregivers who can help her with bathing, dressing, toileting, meal prep and some light housekeeping (I can’t keep things clean the way her caregivers do!) The staff is kind and concerned, checking in on her when she had a recent hospital stay and ready to receive her home with the extra care that she needed!
I am a mom and I work and I care for my own mom. With Home Instead, I have peace of mind that I’m not in this alone. I can sit down with my mother and just talk once in a while rather than run around trying to get everything done. She has a lot of health issues. With the extra sets of hands from Home Instead, I can focus on her health needs and know that the every day stuff is taken care of.

This company was a gift from a benevolent universe. After a long and fruitless search for a caregiver that would allow me to bring my husband home for hospice, a social worker struck on “Better Fit” and it could not have been better. Because of multiple care needs, my husband had been marooned in Residential care. Covid and staff shortages created a very lacking situation. Finding Fabienne allowed me to bring him home before the holidays. She matched him with a miraculous caregiver, Tanasha, who immediately assumed all the difficult aspects of his care—transfers, medications, cooking, feeding, bathing. I was freed to just be his mate, stroking, consoling, reassuring, loving. The time spent in this care became some of the most intimate our relationship had shared. It would not have been possible without Tanasha’s strong and loving attention. She was a support not just for my husband, but for me as well. I was deeply touched by Fabienne’s post visit, traveling hours through dark country roads with flowers and condolences. There are not enough words and not enough stars to rank my experience. I am forever grateful!

The staff at Visiting Angels were some of the kindest and caring people I’ve meet. I took my dad in, at first he was very hesitant, after meeting and talking with the great staff and getting to know how they work better, he felt very confident with their abilities to help him and so did I. They help with a number of things, like daily check ups, and help with Alzheimer’s. Overall they’re a great senior home care agency and I would recommend them to everyone. They honestly care about their patients and the families of the patients, and they make you feel right at home. My dad has never felt better thanks to them, and I know I can always count on them and trust them. Other senior home care agency’s just don’t care about their patients like Visiting Angels does. So overall, I feel that my experiences with Visiting Angels has been a enjoy and pleasant one.

My mother has dementia and lives alone in a condominium. As typical of a person with dementia, she has difficulty eating and often either forgets to eat or doesn’t eat enough. I wanted some support for her through the use of a home health aide a few days a week, primarily to monitor her meals and provide companionship. I interviewed multiple agencies and Orange Caregivers really stood out. I am an RN and I wanted someone with compassion and patience because my mother is difficult at times. And I am not disappointed. She has received wonderful care that is full of warmth and I plan to continue our contract with Orange Caregivers. The agency has always answered my requests and questions. Anna, the aide assigned to my mother is always on time and ready to assist my mom. I have reviewed her daily notes and she is doing an excellent job. I highly recommend this agency.

I visited my mother for the first time in two years (because I am out of the area) and was horrified by how she looked and the lack of cleanliness in her house. I brought her a treat of rhubarb pie and ice cream. As soon as I opened the freezer door to store the leftover ice cream, I was hit by the horrible odor of something spoiled, which I realized was coming from the refrigerator.
There was no room to fit the ice cream in the freezer; it was packed full with food that her aide’s husband cooks and she brings along to feed to my mother. I threw away asparagus that was loosely stored, open at the ends, freezer burnt, and unusable. In the quest to find the source of the smell in the refrigerator, I then opened a crisper drawer and found liquefied dripping greens in a plastic bag, rotted, smelly spinach, unusable clementines, and a shriveled apple. The entire drawer of food needed to be thrown away and the drawer washed. Despite removing all of those items, the smell was still there and I finally traced it to leftover fish, which my mother said she had just eaten the day before. The foul odor worries me because the fish was probably spoiled when it was given to her. I also threw away old, horrible pizza.
I don’t know what the aide does while she is there, seven days a week, but my mom is the only client in that house, she doesn’t eat much, and both the freezer and refrigerator are stuffed with food, much of it unusable.
The refrigerator is also filthy with spilled dried liquids on all surfaces, under drawers, and on the door. The door handle itself, according my mother, was pulled off awhile ago by the aide; it is now attached by packing tape. The kitchen floor is filthy, and my mom apologized a number of times because it wasn’t clean. However, the aide could clean it. I have the same job and light housekeeping is part of my job description. Also, my mother’s hair has not been cut in probably a year and a half and looks horrible, as if it hasn’t been washed in many, many months. I’m sure she would appreciate having a cut and shampoo. She is definitely being neglected.
A nurse comes to the house where I work every other month to check on my client and to make sure I am doing right by him. I don’t know if anyone from Angel Helpers ever checks on this aide or goes to my mother’s house, but the aide is NOT doing right by my mom. I also saw that the aide’s husband has been to the house and I have to question that practice.
I had only about 45 minutes to visit with Mom, but if I’d had longer, I think I could have emptied half of the refrigerator of its spoiled, old food. I had to rewash most of the silverware that we used to eat our pie and ice cream, as there was dried food on most of the pieces I examined, even utensils in the silverware drawer. I would NEVER recommend Angel Helpers to anyone based on this aide.
In the respect of privacy to my mom I will say her initials are E.O. and the aide’s name is Christine. My mom lives in Easton. I am sure you can figure out who I am referring to.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Allentown, PA
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
