The city of Little Rock is located on the Arkansas River and is the capital city of the state of Arkansas. It has a population of about 197,000, and around 14.1% of residents are aged 65 and older. Seniors living in the city have access to excellent medical care at UAMS Hospital, which is a teaching hospital that is nationally ranked by USN in one specialty. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, the average monthly cost of nursing home care in Little Rock is $6,083 for a semiprivate room, which is about $1,700 less than the national average.
Nursing home care provides assistance with the tasks of daily living as well as skilled nursing care, which is provided by a registered nurse and includes medical monitoring and treatment for chronic conditions. This type of care is not required by all seniors, and family members may want to look at alternative care options such as home care services and assisted living if they are not sure that nursing home care is the right choice.
This guide provides cost information on nursing home care and alternative options in Little Rock and surrounding cities.

Mom is in the rehab wing at Briarwood Nursing and Rehabilitation, Inc. after having a stroke and she’s been receiving help with pretty much everything. She wasn’t able to walk after the stroke. Now, she’s able to walk using a walker, so that’s good progress. It is a really good facility. The therapists have been really good. The people have been very kind to her and have taken really good care of her. Since we’re there every day, we pretty much know how things are going and it is going well. She likes the aides and the nurses.
She has a nice room with enough space for the wheelchair (when she had to use that for a while). Everything is nice in the room. Except there are only two chairs. So, when more people come to visit, we have to go find more chairs, and one of the chairs is kind of worn out and has a hole in the arm, but otherwise, everything is nice and looks nice. For the most part, the food is good. Some nights they have spicy or greasy foods and she doesn’t like that, but 75% of the time, she likes the food.

The biggest complaint I have about this facility is the lack of care. There is no consistency. There are a handful of those CNAs who truly do care and who always have a positive upbeat attitude. There are one or two nurses who go above and beyond the call of duty when they can. The administration turns hands quite regularly they just fired the DON. They just can’t seem to get a good food service the food is always served cold and most of the time they don’t have eating utensils. The doctors and RNs or APNs who come to the facility or only concerned with one thing and that’s blood sugar. They don’t seem to care about the person’s total care My husband needs wound care and podiatry care although the podiatrist did come in they don’t follow through on anything My husband needs to be turned regularly due to being bedridden people don’t come to a nursing home to die or to get worse The whole purpose of a nursing home is to help those patients who can no longer take care of themselves or the families can no longer take care of them they don’t come here to have their skin broken down and to have quality of care come to a complete stop but that’s what has happened here this is not a disgruntled family member speaking but a heartbroken family member who sees just how bad the lack of care is I pray no one has to ever make this decision because the quality of life is just not right I pray no one ever has to bring a loved one here

On July 18, 2019 we had to make a decision that my mother had discussed with us in the past. She stated "never to put her in a nursing home". But my mother had a stroke and she required 24hr total care. My sister and I both work and we had no one to take care of her. So we decided we had no other choice but to put her in a nursing home. We called around an was told she would have to be put on a waiting list. We called Cottage Lane and was told theyhad beds. Of course we researched and checked reviews . Cottage Lane had some good reviews and some bad reviews. I prayed and asked the Lord to guide me on making this decision. Holy spirit told me not to worry about those reviews check it out for yourself. And I did just that. We decided to put mom at Cottage Lane. And I must say never judge a book by its cover. My mom had a stroke, loss her ability to talk an wasn’t moving at all. We was asked about possibly putting her on hospice. But God!! The staff and therapists are awesome. I can not thank the staff for all that they do and have done. She is moving both arms and speaking some words. Praise the Lord. The therapy team is amazing. They have worked really hard with my mom she has come a long way. I want to thank you all from the depth of my heart. Sandra Mallett

The Green House Cottages of Poplar Grove was a terrible facility. My mother had a horrible experience there. The aides were overworked and expected to do everything, take care of the residents, clean, cook, and everything. There were not enough people working there. So, they were always rushed and they didn’t give the attention needed to the residents. Some aides were extremely rude to my mother, and when she would press the button to get help to go to the bathroom in the night, they either wouldn’t come or they would come and be rude to her and tell her to get up herself. One of them we complained about so much that they fired her. The food was horrible, too.
There were a couple of nice people, and some of those aides told us that they simply couldn’t keep up. They just didn’t have enough time in the day. My mother was there for over a month and her floor was never swept. Her bathroom was only cleaned when I begged them to clean it and the sheets were never changed. It was just terrible. The facility itself was nice. The outside of the cottages was nice. They kept up the yard and the landscaping, but they didn’t do the cleaning inside.
They need more staff to take care of the residents. They need someone separate to do the cooking and someone to be a custodian or do the janitorial services. Also, I think that the staff needed more training on how to take care of people after a stroke. The therapists were good there though. That’s the only reason we kept her there as long as we did, but then the aides were so bad, we just couldn’t let her stay there any longer. She was crying every day when she was there. It was so bad.
Since the buildings were set up with a series of ten buildings and were maybe two workers in each building, but there was no phone number, so you couldn’t talk to anybody to find out how your mom or dad or whoever was there was doing. Then there was one building with the office and they were not even close to where my mother’s building was. So if I called there, I never got through to anybody. It was just an answering machine and there were maybe ten options for people to leave messages with. Their message boxes were always full. So, you had to drive over there to talk to anybody in the office.

The staff members at the facility were really nice when I was greeted at the front entrance. One particular day I went to visit my great grandfather and his room was dirty and he needed some assistance. There was no one available for help, when called someone many times and we were told that they were short staff.
Therefore, I did take the time to assist him with his needs. I wasn’t really impressed with the service because no one stop by to see if he needed anything. The building needed some updating and there weren’t many areas around to take a shower because they were having plumbing problems. After all, I was just not impressed and I was afraid to leave because of the level of care that was provided. He didn’t need much help, but when needed someone should be available within a reasonable time frame.

I have visited The Waters of West Dixon, and it was a very rundown facility. I could see trash piled up on some of the patios. There is a filled-up dumpster with trash rolling out of it. I was going to go on a tour of both their nursing side and their assisted living. The patients appeared (in my opinion) to be drugged or more or less tranquilized in some way. The ones that were walking (not all of them were in wheelchairs) were dragging their heads. Either they were dragging them down the hall to hold themselves up or they were like slumped over in the seat. It was horrific. I turned around and left.
I talked to a staff person on the phone, but I did not talk to them once I got to the facility. It was so bad. I did not see anything except what I could see from looking down the halls. I peeked into a few of the rooms, and they did not look clean. A few of them in the assisted living had a little back patio outside; they were full of garbage and bags of trash.
I was inquiring about nursing and assisted living. There was no one in there that I could find working. They had a front desk but there was no one there. I walked down the hall looking for somebody. I did not see anybody in there. I did not see any staff. I talked to them on the phone, and they were nice.

I was here two years ago. I had extensive surgery, so I was there for long-term care. It’s beautiful. They made sure that the outside was just as nice as the inside. They just did a total uplift on everything. They redid all the flooring. It’s just a very, very nice place to go. The staff cared tremendously about the residents. For example, if your family calls up to see what you’ve done today, they can tell you exactly what the resident has done. Everybody’s hands-on.
The food was very good. For example, if you want fried eggs for breakfast instead of scrambled, they’ll do their best to give you fried eggs instead of scrambled eggs. They try and do your nutritional needs, but for things that you also like. It’s very well kept and very well run. If they’re lacking in one area, the staff picks up. They don’t just let one person do everything. They help each other when they need it. We had karaoke every other week, we played bingo, we had singers come in, we had weekly church services with two different churches that came in. Once a week, we would go shopping or go to the movies. You get what you pay for and then some out there. They could do more personal geared activities. If you don’t feel like going down to bingo or something, they could come up with a one-on-one type of activity.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Little Rock, Arkansas
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
