With a low cost of living and generally laid-back pace of life, Little Rock, Arkansas, is an ideal retirement destination for many seniors. Despite being the largest city in the Natural State by far, Little Rock is home to just 197,312 residents. About 14.1% of these residents are seniors aged 65 and above.

Seniors can potentially save substantial sums of money by choosing Little Rock as a place to settle down. For example, home care and home health care services cost just $4,157 per month on average, per Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey. This is $324 and $419 less per month, respectively, than the average costs of home care and home health care on the national level. In addition to Little Rock’s below-average cost of living, people living in the capital city of the Natural State will find that Arkansas is rich in natural beauty — take the nearby Arkansas River or Camp Robinson State Wildlife Management Area, for example.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Little Rock area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Little Rock Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Little Rock:

Center for Arkansas Legal Services

Address: 1300 W. 6th St., Little Rock, AR 72201

Founded in 1965, the Center for Arkansas Legal Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and public-interest law firm that renders noncriminal legal services to the low-income residents of Arkansas. Seniors can apply to get assistance with many different types of civil legal matters, even with issues that involve multiple areas of civil law. Some of these areas include consumer protection, end-of-life planning and criminal record sealing.

CareLink

Once known as the Central Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, CareLink is one of the Natural State’s eight regional Area Agencies on Aging — Region 5, more specifically, which covers Pulaski, Saline, Prairie, Monroe, Lonoke and Faulkner counties. CareLink’s services, which include home-delivered meals, resource referrals, family caregiver services and in-home respite care, among more than a dozen different services in total, are specifically geared toward homebound seniors.

AR SHIIP covers virtually all things Medicare-related, including Medicare Part D plans, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage. The services are free.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Centers on Aging

The University of Arkansas, the largest college in both Little Rock and Arkansas as a whole, offers several community-based resources to seniors who’ve been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. UAMS’ Centers on Aging offers free family caregiver workshops and physical skills workshops, both of which are meant to be scheduled by family or community members at locations of their choosing.

Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas

Phone Number: (501) 376-4434

Habitat for Humanity is an international nonprofit organization that builds new homes and rebuilds, repairs and otherwise improves existing ones. After senior applicants fill out a functional survey about their homes, the local chapter addresses seniors’ home problems at no cost.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
