My husband was in rehab at Golden LivingCenter - Valparaiso. They were wonderful. We thought my husband was going to pass away when he went there. They got him into rehab, and they got him walking again. He does have the onset of dementia, but that's improving a bit. The place is just immaculate. The service and the care they took of my husband, they just did a wonderful job with him. It's expensive. Anytime I called, they always took the time to talk to me because we live in Michigan City, and it was hard for us to get over there to see my husband. He got acquainted with the staff. They were very friendly and attentive. He was always neat and clean when we went to see him. They were excellent as far as the care that they gave him. He said the food was good. He was always happy with what they served. A lot was like the taste of home cooking, nothing out of a box. He was more or less in a locked community because of his Alzheimer's, so he didn't do many activities. They had a few things, like in the afternoon they would have popcorn and a movie, or they would do maybe some bingo or some arts and crafts. They did have activities.

This place is horrible. They mistreated my dad...he was dying with a brain tumor and on hospice there. A nurse there decided to force him out of his bed and into a wheelchair and took him to cafeteria and forced him to eat...he was actively dying and foods/fluids were only for pleasure at that point. Then that lousy nurse left him sitting in a dark hallway alone for over an hour. That's when we got there. Found him like that, slumped over, cold, shivering and disoriented. We took pictures. The place is filled with incompetence starting with the administration. If you HATE your family member then take them here.

I didn't care for Brickyard Health Care at all. That's why my husband wasn't there very long. They promised a different room. His roommate was horrible with the TV being on loud. That was his favorite place for food, and that's about it. His room was very tiny. It was probably for a single person, and they put two people in there. You couldn't even fit a chair in the room. It was just too crowded. It was very old. I only saw somebody sitting out in front, and the parking was terrible. You walked in and down a hallway to your room. Cleanliness was OK.

I visited this facility about a month ago. I was there providing volunteer service for my church. I was pleased with the facility until I reached a residents room. The room was very dirty and had a foul order. I snooped around a bit until I found an old soiled brief that was saturated in feces and urine. I was very disappointed and immediately reported it to the nurse in charge. She completely ignored me and walked away. I later filed a complaint to the state of Indiana.
