10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Knoxville, TN for 2024

With a population of 190,740, Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee behind Memphis and Nashville. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, approximately 13.9% of the city’s residents are senior citizens. Pleasant weather, highly ranked hospitals and a wallet-friendly income tax law make this southeast Tennessee city appealing to older residents.

Those looking for a good midpoint between fully independent living at home and 24/7 medical supervision in a nursing care community may find that moving into an assisted living community is best. In these communities, seniors who need help with basic activities can get professional support while still maintaining their privacy and independence. Though exact prices vary by location, size and amenities, in Knoxville, the average monthly cost of assisted living is $3,823.

This overview examines the price of assisted living in other Tennessee cities, the prices of other types of care in Knoxville and some of the pros and cons of retirement in the city. A list of low- and no-cost resources for older adults in the area is included.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Knoxville

The Tennessee Department of Health’s Office of Health Care Facilities has oversight of assisted living communities, nursing care homes and similar institutions throughout the state. The office issues operating licenses and is also in charge of investigating complaints and collecting fines.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Knoxville

  • According to annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report, three of Tennessee’s 10 best hospitals are in Knoxville: University of Tennessee Medical Center, Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and Parkwest Medical Center. UTMC is ranked as high-performing in stroke care, heart attack care, hip replacement and eight other specialties.
  • Knoxville’s economy and tax laws make it an ideal choice for budget-conscious seniors. Knoxville’s cost of living is 14.5% below the national average, and yearly tax bills are significantly reduced due to Tennessee having no individual-level state income tax. Notably, the state makes up some revenue via a higher-than-average sales tax rate of 9.3%; nationally, the average is 7.3%.
  • Seniors who enjoy seasonal climate changes will find Knoxville’s climate and weather appealing. The region’s summers are warm without being oppressively hot, with highs generally in the 80s from June to September, and its winters rarely get bitterly cold, with lows hovering around 30 from December to February.
  • Unfortunately, crime in Knoxville is more prevalent than in most U.S. cities, with violent crime occurring about twice as often and property crime occurring about 2.5 times more often. However, these types of crimes are usually not a direct concern for residents of assisted living communities, which tend to have secured entries and exits as well as camera coverage of surrounding areas.
  • Getting around Knoxville is affordable for seniors. Knoxville Area Transit offers half-price fares for adults aged 65 and up. The city is also part of the AARP Age-Friendly Network, an initiative to boost senior-focused quality of life improvements in cities across the nation.
