The region has plenty of attractions for entertaining visiting family and grandchildren, such as historic homes, galleries, zoos and museums, including Muse Knoxville that features hands-on exhibits and activities. South High Senior Living is very new. It just opened a year ago, but it was very nice. It was excellent. It was actually a little cheaper than where Dad had decided to go. It was nicer because everything was new. The staff was spot on. They answered all the questions we had. They showed us the cafeteria and the exercise outside, or the seating area outside. It was just excellent. The facility was very nice. It was new and fresh. It’s a remodeled hospital. It was spacious and very well decorated. The rooms were very nice. One of the drawbacks was the windows were high, where you could not see out if you were sitting down, and Dad didn’t like that part. I was really impressed with it, but my dad was not. The staff was exceptionally nice.

We found Oakwood Senior Living for my brother. The staff has been very wonderful, and he’s not the easiest patient to take care of. He loves the food, and he’s very picky. What we’ve seen has been very nice. They took pictures of him in his room after he moved in and we were very pleased with it. The rooms are spacious, because it’s an old school, they have nine-foot windows, so there’s lots of natural light, and they have really nice, big, handicap accessible bathrooms. His room has a little refrigerator, and a little counter area, and that’s all he needs. It’s everything that he would need. One thing that was nice was we could use their furniture or ours, and we kind of did both. There is an activity director, but because of COVID they can’t do a whole lot. They were taking some of them to sit for a drive in the bus. I said, "Do they get to go somewhere?" She said, "We’re literally just taking them for a ride, they never get out of the bus". So I thought that was kind of neat. As for COVID, I know they go to the movies, they go to the mountains, there were several things that we got to pick from for what he wanted to do, so there were several activities that he could do, that he could choose from, but not right now. They seemed to be the most reasonable, their rooms were bigger, and they just definitely were cheaper for the amount of space that he’s going to get.

We were very impressed with Northshore Heights – Knoxville. You feel like you’re going into a resort hotel because it had a lot of seating outside. It had the look of a resort hotel both in the front when you went in and in the back where they had a very nice seating area. The back faces up a hill, and it’s on a ridge.
It was nicely laid out. It was very comfortable because when you go in the front, there were seating areas out there where people can just hang out. In the back, they had the same thing with a patio area, and it was very comfortable. The dining room had a very high ceiling. It had a kind of a lodge feel to it. The apartment units were all nice. The building was clean, looked fairly new, and there was a lot of good stuff to it.
They didn’t try to be too fine on all extras. It wasn’t complicated like some places where they have like five different levels. It was a simple model. It makes it more predictable. I liked that we didn’t have to try to guess as much on which level my sister-in-law would be. It was a nice facility. It was wheelchair friendly, but you didn’t feel like it was a hospital or anything. It had that comfortable feel to it.
They had a little bit of a basic menu. It was adequate but it was the kind that you might get bored if that’s all you ate. We only talked to the salesperson. She took us around, and she was very pleasant, but it seemed like when you run into the people there, they seemed to be friendly. I didn’t see anything negative there. She showed us quite a few units of the different types they had. It was pretty nice. They even had a little land for expansion there.

It wasn’t great, I didn’t think that person was very friendly. She did not want to take my mom just because she had some wandering issues. She didn’t have to have a memory care but because in her chart, she was found wandering on a road because she was trying to find a social worker. Those people did not want to take her just because of that. It seemed like it was a nice place, and it seemed like they were playing bingo and stuff, so that kind of thing was good. It looked pretty clean, it was secure, and the rooms were spacious.

The extra cost of the healthcare for my father-in-law was going to be over $2,000, so for my mother-in-law it would be well over $7,000. For me that was way too much to pay. I toured other places that had packaged deals, and that was more in the $5,000 range. I looked at their total care since my father-in-law can’t walk and my mother-in-law has Alzheimer’s. I didn’t really care for their Alzheimer’s unit, which was down in the basement. The residents have games that they can play and there’s entertainment. This facility would be fine for someone with memory loss who is immobile. It is very easy to elope from in spite of the bracelet that the staff assured me would alarm to alert staff that a resident is approaching an exit. The bracelet did not work. Memory care is a new venture for this well established rehab and assisted living facility, and the staff does not appear to understand the complicated symptoms of dementia patients. The weird system of gem classification never fit my husband. One selling point is that there is a staff physician,2 nurse practitioners, and an RN assigned only to that unit. However, there appears to be little use of that physician with the memory care unit. NHC sent my husband for a week long psychiatric hospitalization which was very helpful (and not unusual for this population). When he was ready to discharge, NHC refused to take him back because the RN disagreed with the meds changes that 3 psychiatrists made. When I asked for physician to physician contact with NHC’s staff physician, they refused. My husband had been aggressive with staff and residents, but NHC refused to accept that good psychiatric care could make a difference. We move him to a different location which has been a blessing in many ways. He is happy and well liked there.

My sister lived in Heritage Assisted Living for a while. It was a nice facility, and it was clean. Both my sister and I are very satisfied there. If they have all the levels of care, we would definitely go back there because we liked it very much. We liked the person who was in charge of several Heritages facilities. The food was fine. It was very attractive outside. I don’t even expect to find a nicer place outside for anyone who likes to be outside in the evening or while it’s raining. It’s covered; so unless there’s a lot of wind, they could sit there outside. Some places don’t allow any smoking on their property. If you were outside at Heritage, that was the area you could smoke in. It was just very pleasant to be out there and visit with one another.
I think we like everything about it. It was a little understaffed. As far as the people working there, they were all very good and very caring. They don’t have a calendar of activities because my sister moved right before COVID. The person who was manager at that specific site went to another job, and they haven’t really replaced her yet.
Before COVID, they would have someone come every so many weeks and cut people’s hair. Of course, with COVID that stopped. Then when the COVID numbers went down a bit and everybody there got vaccinated, they were able to have somebody come occasionally again and cut hair.
The outdoor space was ideal with tables and chairs and a roof that extended far enough so you can be out there when it rained. When you looked in the foreground, there was lots of flowers and bushes that were just blooming like crazy right now. Then behind that was a whole hill of nothing, but trees.

Some of the staff have been there since they started 6 years ago. They go to movies, they have all kinds of activities like bingo, they go to the mall, and they take them out. I am really pleased with the facility.
