The lady at the front desk of Freedom Pointe CCRC was not very accommodating — she was actually rude. We went to the wrong building. We went to the independent living building, and she was rude, very short, and not very helpful. After half an hour of trying to get to the right place, we finally got to the assisted living area, and those people were much better. I saw the one-bedrooms. They were a little small, and the assisted living rooms don’t have full kitchens. They just have a microwave and a refrigerator, but they don’t have stoves. That’s probably common with assisted living. We saw the pool area, the recreation area with a pool table and some games, and some areas where they were playing cards.

If somebody lives in The Villages, this would have been nice. I would have considered it. I think it may have been pricier only because everything in The Villages is pricier. It was one of the higher rent places. It’s near a lot of shopping though. If you’re The Villages then it’s a beautiful community.

My mother-in-law will be in Serenades at The Villages assisted living. It’s excellent, they’re well-trained, and have enough staff. The place is extremely clean with enough amenities and outside transportation. Their dining area is very bright, clean, easy to access, and the whole facility is one level. In terms of the rooms, there are three different types, but the room she got was private, and that was large. There’s more than enough room and good closet space. It’s clean and extremely well-maintained. People go through a training system every 90 days, it’s kind of like refresher training for them. They’ve got card rooms, outside terraces, they’ve got places for if you want to plant stuff, a little putting green, and they’ve got a thing for little shows. The staff is very accommodating.

I will be staying at Buffalo Crossings Assisted Living. One of the reasons that I chose the place was that it’s a medium-sized facility. I can’t believe how the staff, even the guy pushing the broom, is wonderful. It’s privately owned, and I enjoy its culture. That’s why I’m going with them. I’ve gone down for some meals and whatnot, but I haven’t been to the physical therapy area yet. They have a lot of activities, and everybody’s welcoming.
The staff goes out of their way. You ask for something and they get it. Like today when I came in, I was having some difficulties walking and the gal came over to see if I was OK and she got me a wheelchair. She didn’t even ask. I just thought that was great. They seem to be very aware of what’s going on and they’re knowledgeable, talking to the gal at the front desk, as an example. If she doesn’t know, she’ll get you the answer.
I’ve had three meals here and I find it not quite as spicy as I liked, but I can always add to that. I find the food good and has a nice variety. The menu changes daily, but they also have some regulars that are ongoing, like a sloppy joe or whatever that somebody might want instead of the fancier things. They keep trying to get me to park in front of the dessert counter, but I won’t. The hot stuff is hot.
Everybody is very friendly. They notice a new face, any time you’re on the elevator or coming in the door or going to have a meal. Every time I sit down at the meal, somebody comes by and says, "Can I join you?" The residents I’ve met so far are all very nice. There are a lot of scheduled classes and activities. There’s a theater and there’s cabaret night at the bar. They have special activities for holidays, and there’s a library.

HarborChase of Villages Crossing has been great. There are many people that work there, from administration to the staff, who are very caring, and who do their job very well. I’ve been very pleased with the care that they’ve been providing for my mother.
Her room is very nice. She’s in their assisted living and she said the food is good. The person who runs the kitchen, the chef there, is also awesome.
They have a lot of activities. They have a schedule that they give to the residents each day. My mother goes to exercise class every morning at 9:30, which she really enjoys. There are other assorted activities throughout the day, like trivia activities, live music, and various other things. The activities are really good.
They have a beauty salon and the person who does my mother’s nails is awesome and loves her job. Her name is Kelly and she’s great, very friendly, very caring, really good at what she does, and takes really good care of my mom. The hair salon person is also very good. She has my mom on her regular schedule and takes care of her hair well.
My whole family is really pleased with how much they care about her. I would like to make a special mention to Chuck too, who really does a lot there. The administrator, Mark, has been awesome as well. The front desk people and the nursing staff are also wonderful.

The move-in fee at Village Veranda costs about $3000, It’s a one time fee and they said if you move in by the end of the month, it would be waived. The meals are included, as well as snacks, medical appointments (pick up and drop off), doctors, and an in-house pharmacy. The big advantage is that they accept Medicaid and out of all the ones we visited, they were the only ones who does that.
The place was very clean and very well appointed. Everything looked updated. They had a nice courtyard, some areas outside, an ice cream parlor, a barbershop, a salon, and a library. If they didn’t feel like getting the specials from the menu, they have a separate one that they could make some for them. They said that when my father-in-law will be there, they will have an ambassador to kind of guide him. They would pair them with somebody that has the same interest. They do that for a short while until they get used to the place.

He wasn’t interested at all. They only care for six people, four inside the big house, and two in a converted garage that they turned into two bedrooms. It was very nice, and I liked it. My friend needs a community-type setting. It’s a big house, kind of an impressive looking place. I asked about the food, the girl said, "We give them what they want, we know what they like, and we fix that for them." It’s not very practical though, who wants to cook seven different meals, for seven different people? The people there were in bed all the time, like they were waiting to die.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in The Villages
In The Villages and the rest of Florida, assisted living facilities are governed by the state’s Agency for Health Care Administration. This body regularly inspects assisted living facilities to ensure that they are meeting state long-term care standards.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in The Villages
The air quality here is better than the national median, at 65 points compared to 58. This makes The Villages a good place for those who have respiratory conditions.
There is a low number of physicians here at 37 per 100,000 people compared to the national average of 210 per 100,000. However, the local Villages Regional Hospital has been rated high-performing in two specialties: the treatment of COPD and heart failure.
The Villages is a very safe area. Rates of both violent crime and property crime are around two-thirds lower than the national average.
The overall cost of living in The Villages is 3.9 points higher than the U.S. median of 100. Fortunately for seniors, health care and transportation costs are low compared to many other American cities.
The Villages has a warm year-round climate with no snow in the winter. The city gets more sunny days than the national average, at 234 compared to 205.
Florida is a very tax-friendly state for retirees. It has no income tax, no estate tax and no inheritance tax.
Paying for Assisted Living in The Villages
Assisted living in The Villages costs an average of $4,950 per month. This price is higher than the state average, which comes to $3,700, according to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey. It is also more expensive than the national median of $4,300.

Free Assisted Living Resources in The Villages
The Villages has a wide range of educational and recreational resources catering specifically to elders. Seniors living here can take advantage of the following resources to help them plan and execute a transition to long-term care.
As the local Area Agency on Aging, this organization offers resources to support seniors ages 60 and up. These include a health insurance counseling program and an elder abuse prevention initiative. Seniors can also get information about long-term care options here. Evidence-based healthy aging classes help promote fitness, balance and nutrition in the local elder population.
Florida’s long-term care ombudsmen are volunteer advocates for residents of care homes. As well as providing information about elder rights and senior care laws, they investigate concerns of abuse and neglect in long-term care facilities and resolve them through mediation.
In addition to a range of free self-help resources, this nonprofit law firm offers pro-bono services to seniors, veterans and low-income adults. Experts here can help victims of fraud and abuse and those who have been denied health care, veterans’ benefits or health insurance. Seniors can also get help creating wills and care directives.
