They have one or two people that come in the morning, and one or two in the evening, and it’s usually the same person. The goal of the SHINE Program is to provide Florida seniors with access to useful information about health insurance and answer any questions they may have. SHINE volunteers offer confidential personal counseling services to discuss all aspects of Medicare with seniors, enabling them to make more informed healthcare decisions. The EHEAP program supports Florida’s seniors who are facing a home energy emergency. Examples of qualifying circumstances include receiving an overdue electric bill or receiving a utility shut-off notice. Eligible seniors may receive up to $600 in monetary assistance. This benefit can only be claimed twice per year, once in the winter and once in the summer months. Seniors must provide documentation of the home energy emergency and be at least 60 years of age to qualify. There are also annual income restrictions. This program is provided by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and applicants can call the Elder Helpline for more information.
