My brother, Sheldon is developmentally disabled and it was determined that he needed a personal help. United Cerebral Palsy contracted a caregiver through HDE health and that’s how I met Donny who was the owner of that business. He provided us with a caregiver and we interviewed many caregivers and we’ve had 5 from their company. We had a chance to meet different types of caregivers. We really had a good experience with his company. We had student nurses and some part time caregivers. Our current caregiver is a lady who specializes in working with disabled adults and children that are in foster care homes or on their own. She is just excellent with my brother. The last one we had was a student nurse and knew a lot of medical stuff. She was just absolutely superb. She went through all the doctor’s appointments with him.
What I like the most is that Donny has a 24-hour cellphone that if there’s a problem I can reach him even on weekends. Although I try not to do that because he has a life but if there’s an emergency I’ve been able to reach him without a problem. He has been really helpful in problem solving. As my brother’s case become extremely more complicated, he has been very helpful in being able to work with United Cerebral Palsy in contracting more services. I would highly recommend Donny’s business.

As a trustee of a family trust, I hired Interim HealthCare to provide personal care services to my 98 year old friend, in the final days of her life. She lived in an assisted living facility and after a hospitalization returned on Hospice. The facility could not meet her needs so I hired Interim. I was very pleased with how quickly Judy W. put together the staffing. The caregivers provided total personal care for her, including bathing, skin care toileting, oral care and feeding, when she was able to ea or drink. I found them to be knowledgeable and very caring. They arrived on time, were clean and professional in appearance and the other friends and family involved in her care told me they were pleased with the caregivers they met. I would definitely recommend Interim HealthCare and use them again. Karen H.

Salem Home Care Resources
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Salem:
Address: 2475 Center Street, Salem, OR 97301
Phone Number: (503) 585-6232
The Weatherization Assistance Program is funded by the federal government and supplemented by the state of Oregon. The Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action organization operates the program in Salem. The aim of the program is to assist low-income households to reduce their energy bills by installing cost-effective energy-efficient measures. Residents from low-income households can apply to the organization to see if they qualify for the program. Priority is given to seniors and families with young children. Those that don’t qualify are provided with information to assist them in reducing their energy usage. Services offered include LED bulbs, attic insulation and water heater repairs or replacements. There is no charge for any of the services.

The Marion Polk Food Share organization is a nonprofit that runs the Meals on Wheels program in Salem. Meals are delivered by volunteers around lunchtime every day to seniors throughout the Salem area. All meals include one hot main dish, vegetables, salad, a roll and dessert. The meals are reviewed by a registered dietician and contain between 1/3 and 1/2 of the recommended daily caloric intake of the average older adult. Special diets can be accommodated if requested in advance. There is a small charge for each meal but financial assistance can be arranged for those that cannot afford the payment. Additionally, the group serves free meals at a congregate site on a daily basis from Monday to Friday.
Address: 555 Liberty Street SE, Salem, OR 97301
Phone Number: (503) 588-6303
The City of Salem runs a respite care program to provide assistance to caregivers and to keep seniors living safely in their own homes for as long as possible. There are two program options available. One program is designed for individuals with memory loss disorders and it is a social program that encourages seniors to make friends and participate in group activities. The second program is for seniors and disabled adults in the community. This program provides five hours of care and includes a range of fun activities and a nutritious lunch. There is a charge for attending the respite care programs, but payment options are available for those with financial difficulties.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
