Pasadena is a paradise for active seniors who love to immerse themselves in culture as much as they adore soaking in the sun. There are seemingly endless opportunities for long walks in beauty spots like the Eaton Canyon or Arlington Gardens, or vast open spaces like Brookside Park, with breathtaking views of the San Gabriel Mountains. There are lots of wonderful galleries like the Norton Simon Museum, which offers free entry on the first Friday of each month. While adults over 65 only make up 16% of the population, there are plenty of benefits for local seniors. This guide will provide further details about these resources later on.
There’s a broad amount of choice when it comes to home care and home health care in Pasadena. On average, home care costs $5,434 per month, and home health care costs $5,529 per month — but specific prices vary according to the services and amenities each facility offers. Data from the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020 shows that home health care and home care in Pasadena are more expensive than the U.S. medians, which are $4,576 and $4,481, respectively.
Note: Home care cost data was not available for Pasadena, so data for the closest city, Los Angeles, was used.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Pasadena area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

We are hiring Home Instead for my mom. They’re very professional. They deliver the people that we need, and they meet my parents’ needs. It is going great. My mom needs someone to make her more safe when she walks by physically assisting her, like pulling her hands and making sure that she doesn’t trip or fall. The caregiver gets her on campus by ambulating with her, but he also has escorted her, driving her car to various medical appointments and events. He also helps with light meals. He is a good socializer with, not only my mom, but with the people that she interacts with in the dining room. The caregiver is excellent; he is the cream of the crop. He is cordial, bright, interactive, and fun. He will do anything, walk the dog and make my mom sandwich. He is part of the family, to be honest. My sister handles the billing and I think it’s fine. She was hoping they would go to once a month, but they don’t want to do that. They’re having it twice a month. Scheduling is perfectly fine. They’re flexible and it helps us a lot.
Home Instead has made a huge difference to my mom’s life. It has been great. We all like it a lot. Kelly and Ruby have been terrific as well. We have been using them since April 15th. My mom was very opposed to having a caregiver, but now she considers him a friend, and that’s a long and big difference. She looks forward to him coming. He got a bit of charm and persuasiveness.

Routine Competency Evaluations
Not including the hiring process, you are required to undergo competency evaluations at designated times – upon completion of the Probationary Period, annually and on an as-needed basis, in accordance with the Everys Home Care Policy #4.60 – Competency Validations & Evaluations.
These evaluations are usually completed by the Supervisor and/or Registered Nurse and are conducted to determine your competency in performing and rendering services, according to Agency Policies & Procedures and Standards of Practice. If there appears to be a performance problem, these Competency Evaluations will help the Supervisor/Registered Nurse assess the problem and ensure training is provided, which will help you to improve your efficiency. Copies of your Competency Evaluations will be filed in your Personnel File.
Performance Appraisals
In accordance with its Policy #4.80 – Performance Appraisals, Everys Home Care appraises and develops employee performances regularly through the use of informal and formal evaluation approaches. This enables you to receive feedback on your job performance, to assist you to become more effective in carrying out your duties and enables the Agency to ensure that its quality service standards are maintained. Details of the appraisal content and process can be found in this policy.
You will meet with your Supervisor informally every two months to discuss work performance. This will provide an opportunity to assist you in improving your performance, if needed, before the formal appraisal is conducted. The content and results of your discussions with your Supervisor will be documented and placed in your Personnel File.
The Appraisal Process
Formal meetings are held upon completion of your Probationary Period and then annually after that. There is a formal appraisal process that is followed.

My mom had a rapid decline in health and needed care that we couldn’t always provide her. Dan at Redan was quick to respond to all my questions. Within the week we had a caregiver to the house, she was kind but wasn’t the right fit. Dan again was fast to respond and get us connected with another. In walked Lulu and I knew my mom was in the right hands. She is kind and compassionate and overall makes my mom feel comfortable and loved. She cares for mom as if she is caring for family. My mom looks forward to her visits and overall has been happier since Lulu began caring for her.

I hired Shining Star Home Care Inc. for my mother. The staff themselves have been great, but it’s the caregiver. He called me and wanted to get money from me. I thought it was inappropriate and manipulative. They were the most expensive of all the different ones. I just wanted to give Carmen the opportunity to find somebody who is a better fit. The caregiver is taking them to appointments, and he is cooking for my mom.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
