They don’t have a big turnover rate, which is good. I think it helps all the patients there feel more secure because there is not a lot of strange people coming in all the time. They have developed a little relationship with them, so I’m very happy about that. Everything is provided there. They offer many activities too. The activities are very good. They encourage them to do whatever they can. My husband has gotten less active, but he is well cared for, and that’s what’s important to me.

They have outings to local libraries, events, culture, restaurants, shopping and even athletic activities. They take suggestions to update the schedule as much as possible.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Riverside
Assisted living facilities in Riverside are officially called residential care facilities for the elderly. These facilities are licensed and monitored by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Riverside
Riverside is among the more affordable cities in California and may be a financially viable option for those seeking assisted living services in the Los Angeles region. While its overall cost of living is about 33% higher than the national average, it’s roughly 17% cheaper to live here than in the typical California city.
California has some of the highest income taxes in the United States. Income from retirement accounts and public and private pensions are fully taxed at the state level, and the state imposes a capital gains tax. However, Social Security benefits are exempt from state income tax, so those who primarily rely on this form of retirement income may see little impact from the state’s tax rate.
Comfortable weather throughout the year is one of Riverside’s most notable benefits for retirees. On a 10-point index on which the United States rates 7, this city scores 8.7, indicating that most days have mild temperatures and humidity levels are generally low.
Riverside’s air quality is comparable to the air quality in the nation as a whole. On an air quality index that assigns higher scores for cleaner air, Riverside is rated 55 versus the national score of 58. Older adults with allergies, asthma or cardiovascular conditions may want to seek out indoor activities on days when outside air quality is poor.
Riverside’s property and violent crime rates are slightly high compared to the nation as a whole. On a 100-point crime index, the city’s violent crime rate is six points higher than the national median at 28.7, and the property crime rate is about 11 points higher at 46.7. To keep residents safe, many assisted living facilities utilize updated technology to monitor their grounds and ensure security.
Riverside is a very affordable option for assisted living, with monthly fees coming in at $3,900. This is about $1,100 below the state median of $5,000 and $400 below the national rate of $4,300.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
With assisted living facilities charging just $3,900 per month for services, Riverside is among the cheapest California cities for this level of care. Only a few surveyed cities have more affordable care, including Stockton, where seniors pay $3,500 per month on average. In Santa Maria, care costs are on par with the state average at $5,000, and in Napa, fees are high at $6,250 per month.

Assisted living is about $2,000 higher at $3,900 per month. Seniors may also obtain home-based care, including homemaker services and specialized home health aide services for $5,053. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Riverside
While many families use their own funds or personal assets to pay for assisted living, there are plenty of additional options to cover these costs. Some additional ways to finance assisted living costs include:
The Riverside area is home to several nonprofit agencies to help seniors make the best choices for their short- and long-term care needs. The following table features organizations and programs that advocate on behalf of seniors, educate them on their rights as assisted living residents and help them identify options for paying for their care.
Seniors in Riverside have access to over two dozen free and low-cost services through the county’s Office on Aging. As the local Area Agency on Aging, this department has a long-term care ombudsman program to advocate on behalf of assisted living residents and help them understand their rights. It also provides information and referral services, case management, nutrition services and social and recreational programming. Seniors must meet minimum qualifications for free services.
The region’s Council on Aging administers the statewide Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program, which provides free health insurance options counseling for those who qualify for Medicare. It has trained advisors who can answer questions about Medicare benefits and options, Medicaid and its waivers and long-term care insurance, which can help seniors find ways to pay for assisted living. The office also has a long-term care ombudsman program to promote the quality of life of those in residential care communities.
Inland Counties Legal Services has an office in Riverside, providing older adults with easy access to free legal advice and representation. It’s staffed by legal professionals who can help seniors obtain public benefits, such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. It can also help with consumer issues, such as denied health insurance claims, overpayments and unfair debt collection practices.
The County’s Veterans Services Office advocates on behalf of veterans and helps them obtain services and benefits, including those that may help cover assisted living expenses. It has trained advisors who screen veterans and help them apply for the Aid and Attendance benefit, disability compensation and pension programs.
