Pasadena is a scenic city in the San Gabriel Valley, a few miles from downtown Los Angeles. About 135,732 people call the city home, and 16.3% of the residents are older adults aged 65 and over. The city’s retirees benefit from warm year-round weather, and easily accessible transportation connects to its many amenities. Seniors can spend their free time exploring the city’s museums, shopping districts and gardens.
Seniors who need support with day-to-day living may benefit from assisted living care. These residential facilities offer accommodations in homelike settings that tailor care according to an individual’s needs. Assisted living benefits include companionship, access to amenities, such as a library, and not having to worry about meals or housekeeping. Opting for this type of care in Pasadena costs around $5,250 each month.
This guide provides an introductory view of Pasadena with some benefits and drawbacks for seniors. It compares the city’s assisted living costs with other areas and types of care. Additionally, we’ve compiled a list of helpful resources.

My parents lived at Monte Vista Grove Homes – The Hearth for many years. The location was very safe and the grounds were very beautiful. It’s California-Spanish style. They had recently built a big fitness center and it was very nice. The organization was very old, but this facility was just cared for with all kinds of flowers and fruit trees. People sometimes used to call it The Garden of Eden. They had art classes, classical music classes, Bible studies, weekly convocations with speakers, birthday celebrations once a month, and they had special meals for the holidays. The residents there were just wonderful people, and the staff was very personable and caring. I’m just grateful for the time my parents had there. I highly recommend this place.

I toured here. They have assisted living, but it’s really more independent living. They are little studios with a bathroom. My dad has to be able to get up and go to the bathroom. It is assisted living; that means they’re the ones that told me they are willing to take people in wheelchairs. It seemed like almost independent living because the people have their own little rooms.
Some of the people I saw there were quite independent, walking well, and pretty mobile. They have people that will do everything for them, like go in the rooms and dress them and stuff.
I thought it was very small, but small is good. The rooms were not too far. One room they showed me was a little bit too far for my dad to walk to the dining room. It is better than these huge places that are floors after floors after floors and big, long, long, long hallways. It was small, and it was cute.
The menu looked good. I asked if I could at some point go and try their food. Of course during Covid, they’re not letting visitors come in and eat a meal (which I was disappointed).
The grounds were really nice. They had some nice patios for them, a nice TV room, and a living room. I only saw one little man walking round. Where were the seniors? The little man that was walking around was very mobile, didn’t use a cane, and didn’t use a walker. He was just walking around taking his daily stroll. I was disappointed. I think at the hour I went, lunch was over. Nobody was in the TV room or in the room relaxing. Nobody was chit chatting. They were all in their rooms.
When I went, they didn’t have any activity going on at the time. They had a beautiful piano, and beautiful, nice, comfortable chairs facing the piano. They had a nice TV, and they had another living room. They had like a little snack bar, and it was for the people. The dining room was very nice and clean with nice tables. They weren’t close on top of each other. There was good separation because seniors need room to walk with their walkers and stuff. There were rails all along the hallways, and I liked that a lot.
I just wish I would have seen some people moving about. If I choose that place, I will have to go try a meal. I would want to see the people that are living there.
The staff was outstanding, and it was a very nice building.

While in Pasadena, my friend and I visited Castle View Retirement Estate as an option for his mother.
We could see that they maintain the outer grounds very well. The woodsy surroundings looked very comforting, with plenty of seating areas to enjoy.
They offer both independent and assisted living options in this community. There are both ownership and rental opportunities available, so there is a nice mix of residents to interact with each other. We really liked this, because we are unsure of how my friend’s mother’s condition will progress. Right now, she is fully aware with some memory issues, but this could change over time.
The interior foyer and visiting section was fresh and bright. There were fresh flowers and it was welcoming. The entire place seemed very easy to navigate.
We could see the many large communal spaces, many of which could be reserved for residents to spend quality time with their friends and family.
Physical activity is encouraged as much as possible. They offer yoga and aerobics classes, and there are many opportunities to go on nature walks and to walk around the lovely grounds daily.
The meals looked and smelled really delicious. Snacks are also available whenever residents desire them. The menus included food options for all kinds of dietary needs and desires
The staff appeared to accommodate all levels of ambulation. The residents are taken on many trips around Pasadena, which offers many cultural events in the many beautiful areas. The residents may also enjoy a number of in-house hosted events in the facility.
The residents’ private units were all really fresh and looked like very individual dwellings, with nice fresh air and light.
We liked the safe environment here. The seniors all appeared very content and as though they were getting the care and attention they need.

He led us to believe that he and his staff will be very mindful of my mother as well as any facility should be. He’s coming from a nursing background which makes him possibly a little more sensitive and positive towards the elderly or those who are choosing to live in that particular facility. Their facility will be assessing my mother on where she is, her level of ageing, and what is needed for her and her care.

COVID-19 Rules for Assisted Living in Pasadena
Since most COVID-19 rules for Assisted Living Communities and other Senior Living Facilities are set at the state level, you can view the specific rules for your state on our Guide to Assisted Living in CA. Keep in mind that every community has specific policies that they put in place to protect their residents, so you should contact your local community for more information. Additionally, you can contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more – find contact information here.
What to Consider About Assisted Living in Pasadena
Pasadena’s residential care facilities, including assisted living communities, must comply with the robust set of rules set by the California Department of Social Services to receive and maintain their operating licenses.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Pasadena
- The city’s government offers a Dial-a-Ride service for senior residents. This low-rate service provides curb-to-curb transportation within Los Angeles County.
- While Pasadena’s overall cost of living is well above the state and national medians, costs for utilities, transportation and groceries are in line with the rest of California.
- Pasadena’s health care providers charge less than other parts of the country. Additionally, the city has 211 medical professionals for every 100,000 residents, compared with the national average of 210.
- The city is home to several medical centers, including Huntington Health, which has a specialized senior care department. Other highly rated hospitals are the Alhambra Hospital Medical Center and the Methodist Hospital.
- Pasadena retirees enjoy excellent weather year-round. The city has 286 sunny days yearly, sees no snow and rarely experiences rain.
- The city has low violent crime rates and ranks slightly above the national median for property crime. Additionally, assisted living facilities generally have security measures in place for residents.
Paying for Assisted Living in Pasadena
Pasadena’s average prices for assisted living facilities are equal to the state’s median of $5,250 but higher than the national average of $4,500.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Assisted living residents in Pasadena pay more for their care than seniors in nearby inland areas such as Bakersfield ($3,750) and Riverside ($4,000). Older San Diego residents pay $225 more each month than their Pasadena counterparts. Just an hour’s drive away, in Oxnard, rates for this type of care rise to $5,750, which is $500 more than in Pasadena.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Except for adult day health care, which costs $1,652, assisted living is the most cost-effective type of senior care available in Pasadena. Home care and home health care providers charge $5,911 per month. Nursing homes are the most expensive option for seniors in the area, at a median rate of $9,125.
