Just northeast of Los Angeles, the city of Pasadena is home to 141,000 residents, out of whom 16% are seniors aged 65 and older. Residents enjoy easy access to many top-class medical facilities and hospitals including Huntington Hospital with its Senior Care Network, and the Pasadena Urgent Care & Medical Center. According to Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey in 2020, Pasadena is one of the most financially accessible cities in the state for nursing homes, at a median cost of $8,060 per month.
Nursing homes offer both short-term rehabilitation and long-term residential care for frail seniors. Residents in these facilities benefit from skilled nursing, round-the-clock supervision and intensive attention to ensure their complex needs are met. Caring staff can help with bathing, dressing, eating and other daily living activities, while trained nurses provide medical monitoring. Skilled nursing facilities provide a high level of care, which is reflected in the cost. Cheaper care options include home care and accommodation in an assisted living community.
This guide offers a comparison between nursing home costs in Pasadena, the rest of the state and the rest of the United States. We’ve also compiled a list of free resources for seniors who are looking to transition into a skilled nursing facility or trying to delay the need to move into one.

My brother is now in St. Vincent Healthcare. This place is mainly for Alzheimer’s patients. For me, it is a very well organized place. There’s always someone who’ll talk to you. The staff does a lot of things for their patients even though every need is different for each patient. My brother’s medications and dietary intake are being monitored. They have different doctors that come in for different needs, e.g., podiatry, psychiatry, etc. One time, they were doing their afternoon exercises with music, walking around and dancing around the hallway. It was kind of nice. They have an outdoor courtyard where patients can be out in the sun if they insist. Each room has a television. Overall, I’m pleased with this place.

The place was old, dirty, and not updated. The food was OK and the dining area was OK, too, but there were not enough activities. The residents were just watching TV, listening to music, and playing bingo.

Worst place ever. My dad’s life was cut short after being at Two Palms for less than one year. They kept him from walking and put him in a wheelchair. They would leave him in his diapers for a long time before changing him. The facility is dirty and had numerous roaches. The food is bad and my dad said that it tasted “like garbage.” They force fed him causing a serious lung infection that nearly killed him. Jesse (D.O.N.) and the majority of the staff care only for money: they put on smiles when family is around, but when you leave they treat the elderly residents poorly, paying no attention to their condition. This facility should be closed as soon as possible.

My mom was put in Brighton two years ago. She was in the nursing care, and she was there for rehab, which is another one that is awful. The place was really old. They also had a lot of what she called medical people that live there permanently that are either handicapped mentally or physically. It was a whole different wing from the nursing facility; that area had three to a room, and they live there permanently. They would hang outside in the parking lot, smoking cigarettes, weed, and drinking. I couldn’t believe my eyes. A lot of them are younger because they’re medical people whose families don’t want them.
I did see a lot of people there. It was all pre-Covid. I just give them a low rating with everything. The rooms were old, and it was an old building. I didn’t see a garden for the people.
The rehab was probably the best part. I would say the staff was pretty good. They were kind and very nice to my mom. They have a very nice staff. All I saw was the dining room; that’s all I could see. I didn’t see much going on in there. I saw a lot of people sitting in there. It was people that either were permanent residents or the people that were in nursing care. The beds look like they were taken from an old hospital that was closed down, and they bought old used beds. They told my daughter not to sit on the beds because there’s a lot of infectious diseases. I’m like, "Well, don’t they clean in between patients?" I thought that was really weird.

Nursing Home Costs in Pasadena, CA
The median monthly prices for nursing homes in Pasadena are $8,060 for a semiprivate room and $10,570 for accommodation in a private room.
The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Pasadena, CA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Pasadena, CA
The city of Pasadena has several resources for seniors who want to stay at home for as long as possible, including those that support nutrition and home care services. Other services are designed to help seniors who are already in nursing home care.

The Home and Community-Based Waiver is available to older adults in California who qualify for Medi-Cal, the state’s version of Medicaid. Seniors must need nursing home levels of care to be eligible. Services are offered in the participants' homes or in other types of residential units, such as assisted living facilities.
The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program offers a broad range of support for older adults who live in facilities such as nursing homes. Seniors and their family members can contact this program for help with finding a suitable nursing home and understanding their rights as residents. Program volunteers also record and investigate complaints and concerns about specific facilities.
