Featuring a huge shopping complex and a notable arboretum, Arcadia has much to offer its elders, as reflected by its significant senior population: Individuals 65 years of age and older comprise 19.1% of the city’s estimated 57,939 residents. Arcadia is the site of the Methodist Hospital of Southern California, where specialists cover cancer care, surgery, stroke recovery and other needs. The surrounding area offers many additional medical facilities seniors can turn to for care.
In Arcadia, a typical senior pays $8,060 for a semiprivate nursing home room, per the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey. That is several hundred dollars higher than the national average of $7,756. Nursing home residents can expect features such as 24-hour staffing and medical supervision from trained nurses and physicians. Those extensive offerings are reflected in nursing homes’ prices, which tend to be higher than those of other senior care types. If a senior does not need intensive care, then the lower-priced services of assisted living or home health care may fit better.
This guide goes over the cost of several senior care types in Arcadia. It also lists some resources that can make the aging process easier for Arcadia’s older adults.

Alderwood is honestly a great assisted living facility. I’ve only met one staff member who did not seem to love their job, and even they still did more than what was asked of them. All of them have made an effort to get to know my family, and greet us by name whenever we visit. The amenities are also very good, but I cannot give more information since my grandmother seldom utilizes them due to her inability to walk and lack of desire to socialize. The residents are also very kind, they smile at me every time I go. The best thing about Alderwood is that the staff seems to really care. Everyone there is happy, and I rest well knowing that my very fragile grandmother is in caring hands. It is located in a good, quiet area. San Gabriel is a great city, and is also very close to my city so visiting is very easy. I cannot stress enough how great this assisted living facility is. With all of the stories of abuse and etc, it is very hard to choose a home, especially when my grandma has been known to lie incessantly. We wanted to know that we were putting her in trustworthy hands, and her social worker, constantly makes sure of that. She has told me that he visits her constantly and my family is also close to her social worker. Although assisted living places aren’t really the greatest places in the world, I think Alderwood is the lesser evil by far compared to other homes.

They have in rehab there, which is good. She gets rehab twice a day for five days. Most of them don’t even do that. The physical therapy and the nursing staff are really good. They have a nice exercise room and a nice courtyard. I feel really good; I have not had any bad experiences when I visit. If my mom needs something, I just call them, and they come right out.
They have a nice-sized game room, they have TVs, and they have movies. You’re getting rehab and you’re getting excellent care.

My brother is now in St. Vincent Healthcare. This place is mainly for Alzheimer’s patients. For me, it is a very well organized place. There’s always someone who’ll talk to you. The staff does a lot of things for their patients even though every need is different for each patient. My brother’s medications and dietary intake are being monitored. They have different doctors that come in for different needs, e.g., podiatry, psychiatry, etc. One time, they were doing their afternoon exercises with music, walking around and dancing around the hallway. It was kind of nice. They have an outdoor courtyard where patients can be out in the sun if they insist. Each room has a television. Overall, I’m pleased with this place.

My grandfather has been the primary caregiver for my grandmother for the last 30 years, and Santa Teresita Manor is the ONLY place that he trusts to care for his wife. We managed to get her into their care days before the Covid-19 epidemic froze all new admissions to long term care facilities.
Care and Commitment to your Loved ones:First off, you don’t need to be Catholic to be welcomed there. Their service is to all regardless of faith. Before admission to the Manor, one of the nuns sits with your family and discusses the needs of your loved one and the family. It covered way more than I would ever have imagined, and covered many things that would not have occurred to us. It really helped to calm a lot of the anxiety and fears that my grandfather had been suffering from.
They toured us around the facility and my grandfather even became a bit excited! The facility was very sanitary in appearance and odor (super important to me), more intimate and less "hospital" feeling in decor, nicely kept up, and perfect for my grandmother! It had great facilities, and the residents did not appear to be depressed and unhappy (I’ve been elsewhere and not had the same experiences).
The nuns at Santa Teresita joined their order due to their passion for caring for the physical, mental, and spiritual care for our loved ones. I can absolutely attest to their care in all 3 categories! Both my grandfather and I have noticed a steady upswing in my grandmother’s mood since entering Santa Teresita (sometimes you can miss signs of depression when you’re living with a situation for so long). Their service and commitment is outstanding. These nuns and caregivers are outstanding in their care and attentiveness. They call any time there is any change of any kind in your loved one! Whether it be doctor visit results, +/- 3 lbs weight change, diet change recommendations, EVERYTHING!
Response to Covid-19:
Santa Teresita had possibly the fastest response to the Covid-19 epidemic in all of California. They immediately locked down and implemented the strictest of policies to ensure the safety of their staff and those under their care (including use of completely separate facilities and staff for those patients under quarantine).
We get emails once or twice weekly with updates with general updates, plus Covid-19 positivity rates at the facility. I can happily state that there have been NO NEW CASES for over a month now! IN ADDITION, ALL STAFF AND RESIDENTS HAVE RECEIVED BOTH VACCINE SHOTS!!! Santa Teresita had gotten all their patients and staff BOTH shots before I had even managed to get ONE shot for my grandfather! Outstanding!
Visitations and facilitating communication:This has been the key to keeping my grandparents going during the last year. My grandmother is a quadriplegic, and on a daily basis she has someone who assists her in using Facetime with my grandfather. They also help her go through her emails and letters and read them aloud to her. Visitations have depended on the state policies and positivity rates, but recently we have been able to schedule regular, in person, socially distanced visits with 2 or fewer people present at a time (the rest wait outside and swap placed). This has been an awesome development, and one we have all been thrilled about!
Santa Teresita gets two thumbs up, 5 stars, and 10/10 from our family!

This nursing home is one of the better ones out there. The staff there do a great job of making sure all of the resident/patient’s needs are met and the living environment is pretty comfortable. My mother lived there for 2 1/2 yrs. and they did a great job of being attentive to her needs/care while she was there. The staff worked well with the family in coordinating her care.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Arcadia, California
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
