Across the Hudson River from Manhattan, Jersey City is the largest city in Hudson County and the third most dense city in the United States. Seniors account for about 11.1% of the population here according to the 2020 census. While this is below average for the United States, the city promotes a high quality of life for Jersey City’s elderly population.
Seniors in Jersey City who need a high level of medical attention and supervision have many options for nursing homes. According to Genworth Financial’s Cost of Care Survey for 2020, the average cost for a semiprivate room in a Jersey City nursing home is $11,771 per month. When this level of care isn’t required, seniors can find less expensive care in assisted living communities or at home with help from home care service providers.
This guide compares the cost of nursing homes in Jersey City with nearby municipalities and with other types of senior care in the area. Families with limited financial means may want to contact the free resources available in the area.

My sister was put at Hamilton Park HCC for rehabilitation by the doctor. It was really nice and clean. The staff is very nice to deal with and interested in your family member. I was very satisfied with it. The food was very good. They served it with salt and spices just right for the patients. It’s very nice. I don’t have any complaints about it. They had plenty of activities for them, like bingo, visiting singers, and arts and crafts. They had a staff member there to do different things with them like crocheting, knitting, and playing cards. There’s a whole lot of different things for those who could get up and sit in the dayroom.

In short, this place is a God send. Allow me to explain.
My father recuperated at St Anne’s semi-acute rehabilitation facility for approximately six weeks following a heart attack in late-2019. He had been in the ICU for a weeks and was transferred here immediately thereafter. As his caretaker, I wanted a place that would care for my father, provide great rehabilitation services, and make him feel at home. St Anne’s exceeded my expectations on all three fronts.
The service here is excellent. I was particularly impressed with the physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapists on staff (Megha, Kolange, and Pascal). They worked together to create an integrated plan for helping my father regain his strength and independence. They also demonstrated exceptional bedside manner and were compassionate in their care.
The health aides were also very helpful. One aide in particular (Noura) was exceptionally good and cared for my father around the clock. I am deeply thankful for her and her service. More generally, the aides were quite good and helpful and treated my father as a family member. This was especially heartening and gave me peace of mind about my father’s care.
The facility is also impressive. The room in which my father stayed felt like one’s home (it did not have a hospital-like feel unlike many other facilities). There is also a dining area, library, and living room that made us feel very much at home. There are also various social activities and services available on site.
Lastly, I would like to recognise Ms Iva Kirshner, who is the social worker at St Anne’s. She is a rockstar – exceptionally competent, thorough, compassionate, and always provides the right advice for getting the care that one needs.
Highly recommend to say the least!

From the moment you walk in, the place is welcoming and clean. The staff are thorough in keeping tract of all the people coming and going to ensure everyone’s safety. Even as a volunteer, I wear a temporary ID while in the facility.
It’s common to hear that living in a nursing home can become depressing for residents. The activities department does a wonderful job of keeping the residents busy and engaged with each other and with other staff members. There is a calendar on each floor that lists the schedule of activities for each day of the month. I usually come in on Bingo day, which runs for about 1.5 hours. The staff are so organized at transporting and seating the residents before and after the activity. There are plenty of volunteers who get to help those residents who may not be able to hear well or see well so that everyone has a chance to play.
The staff are kind enough to let volunteers go around the facility and spend one-on-one time with residents when there are no activities going on. As a volunteer, it’s very rewarding for me to get to learn about their experiences as well as to put a smile on their faces. I think it’s important to note that the nurses are very organized when giving out medication and keeping tabs on their residents. The rooms are clean and tidy, and there is enough room to allow privacy for two people who share a room.
Once a month, the activities department holds a party to celebrate the birthday celebrants of that particular month. This is a time when family members and friends get to spend time with their loved ones while having cake, cofee and dancing to music. It gives the residents a chance to mingle and socialize with those they don’t usually see on a daily basis. The staff here not only do an exceptional job of taking care of the residents, but also go that extra step in getting to know them and treating them like family.

When my sister-in-law came to LNH she weighed 90 lbs and I was preparing for the end. She has suffered from dementia since 2012. She was in another facility that wouldn’t accept her back from rehab after she broke her hip. LNH isn’t as flashy as some other facilities, but the care they give their residents is top notch. My SIL has gained back weight with nourishing tasty food. Where she was previously her tray was dropped on a table and left. At LNH she gets the individual attention and is fed, hence her improved physical condition. I highly recommend LNJH. Their billing is all inclusive. At the previous facility I was charged for laundry, personal care, dispensing of medication. It was difficult to budget as each month, depending on the care needed my bill would fluctuate . LNH’s billing has enabled me to budget my SIL’s assets.

Tray tables are sticky to the touch. Good view of the ocean if that is important to you in a nursing home. Nurses assistants staff is nice for the most part. A lot of the nurses including some head nurses like Ms. Johnson and Ms. Tatiana are clueless, know-it-all, rude, self absorbed, full of superiority complex workers that constantly trying to bring you down by their comments, instructions and lots of attitude.
I would not leave my loved one alone in a place like Haym Salomon. I heard there are worse places than this one, but honestly I would look for a better one.

I believe two persons were positive on the COVID, and now things are getting very strict to get in there. All I get is a call, and so far I don’t have much on what’s going on. So far, when we talk, they’re pretty good, but I don’t know how things are. If I can go over there I can only come to the main entrance, but from there I can’t do anything also. Everything looks nice and clean. When they talk to me they’re very nice. There was a Colombian lady that was talking to me yesterday and she was very polite. She was talking to me about how my wife was doing and how she was feeling.

My wife is now at Harborage. They’re taking care of her. She fell and she had surgery in her shoulder. I cannot go and visit her; I cannot see her.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Jersey City, NJ
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
