I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Our experience having our father at The Carillon has been great. They have a lot of activities. They do bingo three days a week and it is staffed 24 hours a day at the front desk. They are very responsive and very personable. You can tell they put the residents as a priority. My father is in a one-bedroom unit with a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and a walk-in shower. So, it's roomy and just enough. They have different floor plans, but they are all the same price. There is no meal service, so it's all independent as far as cooking. If you choose to do Internet or cable, it's added to your bill through the property. You don't have to put it in your own name and go through all that, which is nice. All utilities are included, so nothing's in your name there. There is no laundry in each unit, but there is a central laundry room. On the second floor, there are elevators. The doors are locked from the outside at a certain time. So, you have to have a key fob to get in and out and visitors sign in and out at the front desk. They have someone who comes in and plays piano twice a week in the great room. Some different providers, like Humana or something like that, come in now and then and do either bingo with prizes or other things. They also have an exercise class by an outside provider twice a week that's included and there's no extra charge for any of that. The only thing that there's an extra charge for is if you take their van on an outing. They have outings to sign up for and you pay if you go on those.

The price at The Carillon was good, but the rooms were just small and they did not have much in terms of amenities. They did not have physical therapy, which is what I needed. The staff were all very pleasant and very professional though. The building was newer and so it's well-maintained.

I visited this facility

We went to The Carillon. I like it. For the places in a similar price range, they seemed to have the most community-centered activities and sort of engagement between the staff and residents, so I was impressed with that. They also had the shortest waiting list of any that we have so far. The location for my mom wasn't ideal, but she has put in an application there for the waitlist. That's the one I'm most excited about, and she's very excited about that one, too, but our budget is not there yet. They have dishwashers, sinks, refrigerators, and stoves in the rooms. They did not have a laundry hookup in their rooms, but every floor has a laundry onsite facility. They seem to have a lot of programs. Their staff is really friendly. Their application process seemed pretty simple. They were able to show us an empty unit, and that unit seemed to meet the requirements and expectations that were advertised on the website. The staff who toured me around was very polite and personable. She was patient when my mom took time, to get around because of some mobility issues. She was very patient with her when she needed to take breaks during the tour. She was very accommodating. Because it's independent, it doesn't have any meal service, although they do have not a cafeteria, but sort of a lobby with tables where you can have events. Community organizations will come like Senior Resources of Guilford and host events and things like that. There's a space, but they do not provide meal service. It's not a full assisted living, and so there are some things that they could be doing more. I think it's a good place if you're looking for something a little more than other local independent living, but you're not quite ready for assisted living, and especially their price point, it seems like they have things set up so that people can stay there and stay independent as long as possible. They have a company that you can contract with to do simple household chores or have them walk your dog or whatever. They are contracted with them as a facility that offers some of those supplementary services on an as-needed basis, which is something closer to an assisted living model than an independent living model.

I would’ve wanted to know that the facility does not have a generator so if the power happens to go out the way it has today the residents are very cold, they are elderly, and some are on oxygen or other devices that need electricity for them to survive. This is the second time within a couple of years that this has happened. We’ve been asking for a generator for our loved ones there. We have not gotten feedback or generator generator.

The apartment at The Carillon was small, but for one person, I think it would be fine. They have a lot of activities like cards and trips to Walmart or Food Lion. They don't provide three meals a day, but there's a small kitchen in each apartment where you can cook for yourself. They have special events where they feed the residents and there are outings to restaurants too. The interaction between the residents and the staff seemed very special and very personal.

I visited this facility

I visited The Carillon. The staff was great, answered my questions, and did not act like they were upset that I came in without an appointment. The rooms were great. They had individual apartments that were small. I'd have to get rid of a lot of stuff before I could down-size to that. They had a fitness center, exercise classes, and all kinds of crafts. Everybody seemed to have a good time and enjoyed living there. However, there was not a lot of storage.

I visited this facility and was impressed with the single apartment living, along with activities that can be shared with other community residents. The biggest downfall is being on a waiting list.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My brother and I researched numerous Independent living communities for our mom before finally having a “the conversation” with her about moving to a retirement community. Having never been in this position before, we were both uncertain as to exactly what we should be looking for. So, after reviewing what seemed like every senior community in the area, we finally made a decision to contact The Carillon and spoke with Ms. Paris. It was obvious from the very beginning that she had our best interest at heart. She wanted to know all about our family, and of course about mom. She answered all of our questions, and provided us with answers to questions that we hadn’t even thought about yet. It couldn’t have not been a more stress-free process. Not once did we ever feel like we were getting a sales pitch. Ms. Paris even encouraged us to go and speak with other Independent Living Communities in the area, and said that if the Carillon was where were supposed to be, that we would be back. She was right… within three weeks, we were back, talking to her yet again and making plans. I can’t tell you how many sleepless nights I spent wondering if we were all making the right decision. After all, this was ultimately mom’s decision, but we knew that she was looking to us for support. Mom was still able to get around and do things on her own, but she simply didn’t have the desire, nor the energy to live in a big old house any more. The cost of home repairs, the property taxes, and the fact that she had been living alone for the past five years since the passing of our father, was finally getting to her. She agreed that it was time for a change, and little-by-little, we all started to become more comfortable with the decision to make this move to the Carillon. In the beginning however, Mom, was not as easily convinced. She was absolutely positive that my brother and I were shipping her off to the “old folks home”. However, one of the most important things that I have learned throughout this process is that an Independent Living Facility such as The Carillon is a far cry from what some people used to refer to as the “Old Folks Home”. As it turns out, an Independent Living Community is exactly what it claims to be… it is a community for independent folks of a similar age group to live and share life experiences. All the residents that I have met at the Carillon are self asserting, wonderful people who always have a story to tell. There are no lost souls roaming the halls as some might fear. If I had to make an analogy, the folks I have met at the Carillon are the same type of folks that my mom spent time with at church, and the same type of people that she and my father had invited over for supper club and bridge every Tuesday night for the past 40 years. So… the big day came and we were all a little nervous on the day we helped her move in. Who wouldn’t be? I clearly remember calling her two and three times a day, every day, that first week to check in on her. One night, after repeated unanswered calls to mom’s apartment, I called the front desk, and asked them to please check on her. After a brief delay, the desk clerk picked up the phone with a chuckle in her voice and said, “It appears the reason your mother couldn’t answer the phone is that she is too busy playing the piano in the great room, and seems to have gathered a rather large audience. Matter of fact… . listen to this…” In the background, I could hear a piano playing a familiar tune that mom always played at home, only this time with a full chorus of voices singing along with her. Helping mom make the transition to The Carillon was by far the best decision we could have helped her make. She is now surrounded by friends and has a fantastic staff of people who care about her and who are there to assist her day or night. I sleep much better now, knowing that she is happy, safe and secure. My heartfelt thanks to the folks at the Carillon for giving my mom her life back.

I visited this facility

When I first pulled up, the building reminded me of an old plantation style building back in the 1800's. Just the style of it, the way it looked in the light. But when I got inside, it was totally different and the people were upbeat and very excited to see me. In fact, they flocked to me like geese flock to you when you have bread at the park. Everyone seem so gracious and gentle here. I had never been there before however I had driven past there at least a thousand times. I never knew it was an assisted living center. The grounds were very nicely kept and the staff were very knowledgeable and they seemed to be having more fun that the guests. There was once instance where a patient knocked her elbow and the side of a wall and one of the caretakers rushed to her side like she had fell and broke something. It was like the guest really meant something. I was really impressed. The only issue is that I did not get to see as much as I wanted to but I would definitely recommend the Carillon to anyone.
