"Friends Homes at Guilford is independent, assisted and also nursing. It seems to be caring, and it certainly gives you the full benefit with the three steps going down. We did get a complimentary meal, and the food was very good. They seemed caring, and we do know some people that are already there that liked it very much. We only met the one showing us around and she is very good and very capable. She certainly took a lot of time with us. They have several different kinds of apartment. They have a little studio apartment -- which has everything all in one like the bedroom -- but no cooking in there. They do have a refrigerator, and they get three meals a day. They have two-bedroom apartments, and then they have a two-bedroom deluxe apartment, and those get one meal a day, either lunch or dinner. They just have everything. They take them to symphonies, and they take them to the bank, churches, or to the doctors. They have different exercises, and they have movies. We have been here three years, and the ones that we know never mention anything bad that ever happens. It is a very nice facility. It's in a very good part of town, which is very important. The stores are right about a block and a half down. There are stores and banking within walking distance if anybody really wanted to walk. "

"I gave a deposit at Pennybyrn, but when I decided that I wasn't going to move there, no problem, they gave me my money back. The whole facility is beautiful. They call it a campus. People who enjoy gardening have a beautiful area where they grow all kinds of vegetables. They also have walking areas for your dog. Their rooms are very nice. Kathy and Joe, who lived two doors down from me here, moved into Pennybyrn last year. They have a two-bedroom, and their space is almost as big as their house when they were living here. It's really nice. I could live in Pennybyrn. If someone came in and pushed the magic button and got all of the stuff out of my house that's not serving much purpose now, and told me to go pick one of these, I would do it quickly and pick Pennybyrn. I have tried their food, and it's like eating in a five-star restaurant. The people there are helpful, kind, and patient. The dining area is very nice. There are many tablecloths and napkins. There are people walking around to refill your coffee cup or water, or what. It's like an upscale restaurant."

"River Landing at Sandy Ridge was fabulous. It was clean. The staff was wonderful. There were five or six residents that opened their homes to us. Everybody loved it there. They only had wonderful things to say about it. They were very glad they moved there and they wished they had moved there sooner. It is welcoming. I met five different couples who just love it there. The food that we had for lunch was good. The whole community is beautiful the way it's laid out. They have all the activities that I'm interested in, and they even have a nine-hole golf course right there. They have a swimming pool and organized activities."

"My mother was in Twin Lakes for 3 weeks for rehab. She was happy there. The food was good and the cleanliness was excellent. The rooms didn’t impress me much, it was fairly clean. I did not see the memory care but I've heard it was really nice and also expensive. "

"What I like about Village at Brookwood is that it's a small place and once you are in there, you can go to different stages with where your health takes you. It’s a beautiful facility. I also like the small-town feeling. They had us over for dinner one night with two of the ladies that live over there, and they have wonderful food. The ladies were very nice too and very interesting to talk to. They have all kinds of activities, like they have yoga classes, they take people to concerts or if there is something special going on, they arrange that and they take them by bus. It is very, very well organized. The apartment that I am interested in is a one bedroom apartment and it is large. It's very, very well planned. "

"Mom had stayed in Piedmont Crossing, which were very nice apartments. They had three meals a day. She was there for two years. However, she is in an early stage of dementia and we felt like that it was more of our fault than their fault for not understanding the care. We were under the impression that she would be able to transition into one of the memory care places, but it turned out they didn't really offer memory care. They had medical care and independent care, but there was no mental health care there and she wasn't really for medical because she was in a very good condition. However, her dementia caused confusion and caused her to forget to have her meals. She had a nice two-bedroom apartment and we furnished it with her household furniture so it looked like a little slice of her home. It had two bathrooms. It was pretty and it was on the ground floor. The reason we chose that was more for the size and so we could spend the weekends with her. The food wasn't great and the meal seemed to vary in quality from time to time. The service in the dining room also varied from time to time. There weren't many activities so you had to take the initiative for yourself. My mother had to sign up for something herself and it's up to her or us find out for something and then remind her about it. They took them out on outings and they had bingo. Some of the staff were good and some of them were not. Sometimes the phone calls we would have were distressing because they didn't know how to call and put you at ease. She wandered off the grounds one day and I had a terrifying phone call from them on my cell phone that said: "This is an emergency phone call regarding your mother. She wandered off of the facility grounds and was found her lying on a ditch by the side of the road." And I said in horror: "Oh my God! Is she okay?" And she said: "Oh yes! She's fine". And I said: "That what you should have started the conversation with. That's not how you tell someone what you just told me". She didn't understand that and that's frustrating. They told us that we had to come and stay with her round the clock. We had to pay for round-the-clock care until we could find another place for her and that's what we did. "

"Brookridge Retirement is a very nice facility. I looked at only their skilled nursing. It was clean and bright, and they seemed to have a lot of activities and activity areas for the residents. I only had one tour there, and it was fairly quick. Everything I saw looked really nice. The staff answered all my questions, but they seemed a little less eager to talk to me about placement. The building is very large. It's part of a retirement community. The rooms themselves are good-sized, very nice, bright, and open, and all had their own private baths and a big window. It was a furnished unit, and the activity center was big. The dining room was nice. The reason why we didn't pursue that anymore was because of the cost. It's a little out of my father's price range."

"We like Salemtowne. It's very pretty, has a very nice apartment, and has very nice people. Everything is great about it, the location, the food, the people, and the support you get. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. We have a kitchen, but there's a dining room, and we can go there. There are many activities, although we haven't done any of them yet. The place is very clean and kept up maintenance-wise."

"My husband and I came to Homestead Hills in August of 2010. The day that we came to finalize our plans with the Lifestyle Advisor, my husband got very ill. On that day, he was adamant that we drive down despite becoming suddenly ill however when we were in Wilkes County, he took a turn and had to be taken to their hospital. He was then taken by critical care ambulatory services to Winston-Salem. Homestead let me stay in their guest apartment while he was in the hospital. I took him home on Tuesday and moved in at Homestead the following Saturday. I had heard about Homestead Hills through a friend of a friend that previous June. My husband and I were looking to get out of the mountains and closer to medical facilities as our health was not the best. I looked at many communities in Winston and Greensboro. As they allowed us closer proximity to family. Honestly, this was the only place that had a washer and dryer in the apartment and a full size kitchens which is rare. My husband was in rehab with Genesis when he first came. I was involved with the wellness classes as I still am. The wellness program is excellent. I do the early morning class and Zumba on a regular basis. I also like partaking in the special classes. I quite enjoy the cooking demonstrations, trips, eating out with the other members, and activities. We have a church service on Sunday morning at the community which was wonderful for my husband. The different activities are so varied that they can appeal to anyone. You can find something to do just about any time of day and any day of the week. It is impossible to do everything. The drivers here are incredible. They were able to easily help my husband who was in a wheelchair, in and out of the vehicle and push him into doctors’ offices. Sadly my husband passed away, but I have had tremendous support from staff and friends here. I am sure that I would not have had that before living in this tight of a community. The security here is such an added comfort. No matter what time there is always security. This really came in handy when my husband was in and out of the hospital. The food here has improved since the arrival of our new Director of Dining Services. I advise anyone looking to go in and get all the information. Speaking with the staff is very helpful. "
