"My mother is at Arbor Ridge at Kernersville. She loves it. It's just fantastic. The staff is knowledgeable, very caring, compassionate, and friendly. She loves the food. They have activities inside for the residents. They have quite a few nice things going on all the time. When we went to Arbor Ridge, we knew immediately that it was the right one for mom. The facility, the staff, everything, it was just perfect."

"Cedar Ridge is in a more commercial area and to me it was more like a resort setting. It’s built like a hotel and a bigger community. Some rooms were far from the elevators and my wife is not in a mobile situation yet. It really did not fit for what we wanted, because of the largeness and it was all in one building. The individual apartment has its own sun room and the place was impeccably landscaped. They had a billiard pool table, chapel and a private dining room if you want to have meal with your family. The one amenity that they have which was very nice was the association that they have, their parent company. They have exchange program where I’m living here and I want to go to San Francisco on vacation. I put in ahead of time I can go there and I don’t have to pay and you can virtually do that anywhere in the country. "

"Arbor Ridge at Stanleyville has friendly staff and residents. We had some interactions with the residents and they were very positive and very happy. We were there during mealtime and everybody seemed to be happy. The tour was great and that was the top spot for us. If my mom was going to go to an independent living, that's where I would pick. The apartments were clean, spacious, and very accommodating. There's plenty of things for people to do to stay busy, to get into their hobbies and not to get bored. They had games to play and weekly bingo. They have a garden area in the back where people can grow their garden vegetables or plants and they have an exercise room too. It was very nice and very quiet. There's a pond with geese nearby. It's very peaceful. We saw the menu and it was very versatile. One day a week, they let the residents choose what they want so that was very nice. "

"I wasn’t looking for anything but a 1-bedroom. I knew what I was looking for before they showed me anything at Forsyth Court. I think they were very friendly, a lot more so than what I’ve seen. I thought it was very nice. I liked it better because instead of seeing it more commercial-like, it seemed more like a home environment. "

"I was impressed with Creekside Terrace. It was expensive, but it was a very pretty place. There were lots of artworks on the wall. The living environment seemed pleasant. The staff was nice. They have activities there. They have social evenings and I did go to one of those events. I would recommend this place. "

"The homes and apartments are very nice. Each is equipped for any needs you may have. Maintenance will fix anything that needs it in a timely manner. The staff is wonderful. They do everything to make our lives happy and enjoyable. The campus and facilities are beautiful. There are so many activities, it is possible to do all of them. I would recommend WhiteStone to anyone seeking a retirement community."

"We went to Abbotswood at Irving Park. I liked that they divide the memory care into two different sections from middle Alzheimer's and then ones that are really at the end stages. They divide those two groups, which is very nice. The place just didn't feel right for our mother. It was large, and we kind of steer away from the large assisted living kind of places. They have a big activity room. They only take in like 13 people or something, but it's still very large. They have a really nice outdoor area too. Everybody there was good, friendly, and helpful. It all looks very new and nice. It has a large cafeteria area with nice seating, booths and everything. There's a beautiful outdoor area to sit in, and it was larger than most places I've seen. The rooms were nice. They offer rooms that have their own shower in them, and it's really nice. We were on the high-functioning side of memory care. Many memory care facilities have one area to shower and everybody basically uses that. My mother's fairly high functioning still and she takes her own baths and does stuff on her own. It was really nice that you could get a room there that had its own shower and a bathroom in it. I heard it was the only place in the state that divides the memory care area. Some people in memory care facilities end up being in wheelchairs and are at the end of life. It's hard to be pretty high functioning and be surrounded by a lot of people like that. You kind of feel like you're in a nursing home, so I really liked that about Abbotswood."

"We went to The Carillon. I like it. For the places in a similar price range, they seemed to have the most community-centered activities and sort of engagement between the staff and residents, so I was impressed with that. They also had the shortest waiting list of any that we have so far. The location for my mom wasn't ideal, but she has put in an application there for the waitlist. That's the one I'm most excited about, and she's very excited about that one, too, but our budget is not there yet. They have dishwashers, sinks, refrigerators, and stoves in the rooms. They did not have a laundry hookup in their rooms, but every floor has a laundry onsite facility. They seem to have a lot of programs. Their staff is really friendly. Their application process seemed pretty simple. They were able to show us an empty unit, and that unit seemed to meet the requirements and expectations that were advertised on the website. The staff who toured me around was very polite and personable. She was patient when my mom took time, to get around because of some mobility issues. She was very patient with her when she needed to take breaks during the tour. She was very accommodating. Because it's independent, it doesn't have any meal service, although they do have not a cafeteria, but sort of a lobby with tables where you can have events. Community organizations will come like Senior Resources of Guilford and host events and things like that. There's a space, but they do not provide meal service. It's not a full assisted living, and so there are some things that they could be doing more. I think it's a good place if you're looking for something a little more than other local independent living, but you're not quite ready for assisted living, and especially their price point, it seems like they have things set up so that people can stay there and stay independent as long as possible. They have a company that you can contract with to do simple household chores or have them walk your dog or whatever. They are contracted with them as a facility that offers some of those supplementary services on an as-needed basis, which is something closer to an assisted living model than an independent living model."

"My father and I took a tour of Friends Homes at Guilford two years ago. The place takes up quite a few blocks, so it's very big. The staff was very professional. It's a very expensive place. They've got their marketing down pretty well, but it's not affordable. We thought the food was good. The facility was very nice and newly remodeled, and it looked like it was very up-to-date as far as the decor. It didn't look old-fashioned. It looked like it was keeping up with the times. It had a nice library, beautiful grounds, and the apartments themselves were very nice."

"I toured Well-Spring Retirement Community. It has everything you could want for all levels, and it is a large facility that would allow me to walk get my steps and get in shape. It has a gym. It has a swimming pool. It's hard to beat that. It was very clean. The cafeteria was very nice. It was very pleasant. Everybody there was pleasant and was very willing to talk and give me all the information I wanted."

"My mother stayed at Pennybyrn for respite care following her surgery. They were great. They have different wings for different therapies, like if you have dementia or if you are recovering from surgery. She wasn't mixed in with people who live there permanently. The staff was excellent. She shared a room. They have an exercise room, outdoor patios, a baby grand piano, and a chapel on-site. They also have a dining room inside the wing. I was very happy with the facility. They give out meal tickets for families to eat there with the residents. They have special activities like Mexican theme nights and a barbecue on the 4th of July. It costs more, but it was well worth it."

"We preferred River Landing, but our family is in another area. It is a smaller facility so it's more like a small town and friendlier. The staff and the personnel are more friendly. The staff who assisted us were wonderful. It's very secure for the various levels of care. I would recommend this to others. "
