"Recently my grandmother was no longer able to care for herself so we where lucky enough to get her a spot at The Village at Brookwood. We chose The Village at Brookwood because it had such a warm feeling when you come into the community and the staff was very helpful and kind. The first visit we made to see her she was absolutely happy with the way she was being treated. She had already made her own little family at the village. The best part of The Village at Brookwood was that she was able to still live in her own home within the community but was always able to get assistance any time of day when she need it. Within the community she was still able to have family and friends come visit at any time. All together she was very happy with the move and all of the help she has recieved from the staff at The Village at Brookwood. "

"Alamance House is wonderful. It's a homey place; it's clean. The staff is caring and kind and if they're not, they don't get to stay there. They didn't keep somebody with an attitude. I'm impressed with that because when you work with elderly, you have to be happy around them. The CNAs there and the medtechs are good. If you wheel yourself up to the desk and talk to them, they will respond to you and smile. The director is very good. They're really on top of things. The facility is only 1-year-old. It's beautiful. Mom has been there now since February and I am very impressed. They are really, really good to her and she is happy there. My mom is paralyzed on the left side so she doesn't have use of her left arm but she does participate in bingo and they have groups come to sing. They have preachers come to preach. The activity director does her nails on Friday. If you call a couple of hours before mealtime and just let them know so they can make an extra plate, you can eat with them. It's very reasonable. I do that from time to time and it is good food. I would recommend it. "

"We will be moving to the Hamlet at Blakey. It is an assisted living with 52 duplex apartments attached to it, and it met all the needs that we are looking for; that is why we chose it. It does not also require us to pay money upfront. They have a game room, and they also have an exercise room. Overall, my experience has been good. "

"Twin Lakes Community is extremely clean and has many services. They are very caring, and I’ve been very impressed with the care my mother is receiving. She is in a private room with a bed, chair, and places to keep her clothing and television. They have very good food; it’s available to the nursing home patients and to the people that are in the independent living. They have music, bingo, arts and crafts, and religious services. They had pedicures and manicures. "

"Our father relocated to NC almost 14 years ago. His children live a great distance from NC. Up until recently our father enjoyed good health. However that abruptly changed and we realized he needed a senior community. Our dad prided himself on his ability to liver independently. When a health crisis developed both he and us realized that we were in crisis. Crisis is an opportunity to make positive changes. Abbotswood came highly recommended from many different sources. When we met with Sidney and other staff, we knew why. My dad is now in independent living which is important to him. We were assisted in linking my father to services he may need to support his goal of independence. It went beyond to assistance in moving etc. With our heart in our throats we returned home. One week later we returned and were impressed that just about every staff member knew our father's name, his likes and dislikes. Abbotswood seems to hire staff who are willing to go extra steps in making the resident and family feel a sense of belonging. I was impressed that one of the van drivers knew my dad's name and some of his likes and dislikes. Our dad has a great one bedroom apartment. We thought our dad would want to eat one meal in his apartment. He is too social for that, now enjoying three delicious meals daily. We appreciate the staffs' willingness to talk and letting me know that my father is doing well. As my father becomes more acclimated I know he will be joining in a variety of other activities including card games. As our dad has insisted in staying in NC, our mind is eased that he is in a great place that can plan for him in his final developmental task of life. Our dad embraces life and is grateful that he has lived as long as he has in good health. It is not easy for him to be the last man standing so to speak. We are grateful that he is in the process of meeting new people and perhaps developing friendships that can be nurtured. This is the environment that Abbotswood has created. "My friend is in Carolina Spring Senior Apartments. They have income-based apartments. They are very responsive and very caring people. The apartment is very nice and very well maintained. They have activities. They have an exercise room, a large screen TV room, and a gathering room. They have bingo nights. Every single resident there that we talked to was very friendly and happy with the place, which was a very good sign. They also have a vehicle or a bus that will take you to the grocery store. There is free transportation from Chapel Hill to there. In other words, there's some kind of a free bus line, and they have free transportation, which is very nice. They have community people that come in and bring a whole bunch of food; it is some kind of a food drive. They don't have meals prepared there. It is a nice low-income housing place, and water is included. Every floor has a laundry room, which is coin operated."

"The price at The Carillon was good, but the rooms were just small and they did not have much in terms of amenities. They did not have physical therapy, which is what I needed. The staff were all very pleasant and very professional though. The building was newer and so it's well-maintained."

"Carol Woods is one of the oldest places in our area. I've had nothing but pleasant times when I was there visiting people for several different reasons. It is a community where it seems like there is a lot of interaction among the people who live there. They have lots and lots of activities. I've only eaten there one time, and it was good. The sanitation is very good too. I've visited people in their health units where they actually could not stand up anymore, and I was impressed with the cleanliness of that area. The staff seemed to be very pleasant and helpful people. "

"Azalea Estates Gracious Retirement Living was a very pleasant and light place. It's only for independent living, and the apartments were small, but they have a lot of public places where you can spend time at. There's a TV room, a movie theater, and some places to sit, read or write. They have a very nice kitchen that you can sign up to use for baking. The staff seemed very friendly and nice. The price per month includes three meals daily, so it's rather expensive, but their meals were very good."

"Whitestone has come a long way. They have upgraded from just a place to go and die for old folks to a really congenial community. They have expanded tremendously. They have spent money to upgrade and remodel and make the community bright and cheery. They have anything from a one-bedroom apartment up to a three-bedroom house. They have a pool, a barbershop, and a gym, so that you wouldn't have to leave the grounds if you didn't want to. They also have a Men's Bridge Club, where you can get together. We had been hosted by some of the sales staff when we went there. We had been invited several times for musicals. Best of all, we have friends and a great aunt who live there. I would say it was a 4 all the way down the line. The only thing I saw that I didn't like is that they require you to pay for around 35 meals a month. "

"Cedars is by far more expensive than other places, but everything in Chapel Hill is more expensive. They have some very nice grounds and places to walk. You have to own the unit. Cedars is near Meadowmont, which is really nice and has a theater, nice grocery stores, and a lot of things nearby, so you don't have to drive anywhere. It's a very convenient community."

"My mom just moved to the skilled nursing part of Well-Spring, A Life Plan Community. Before that, she was in assisted living. It's a five-star facility with wonderful staff. It's beautiful and they serve wonderful food. They do a whole lot of activities. They have bingo, music, trivia games, ice cream socials every week, cookies and tea days a couple of times a week, happy hour with red and white wine once a week, movie days where they have popcorn, bridge playing, walks, and outside trips to grocery stores on their own shuttle bus. They also have a theater at the facility where you can come to watch performances such as Broadway series, a pool for water aerobics, Zumba, and other exercise classes."
