"There were nice facilities at Carolina House of Chapel Hill. It was not super luxurious, but it was neat and clean. The food was good. And the rooms were pretty adequate, and everything was fine. "

"My father's oldest brother has always been a very active man and now that he is in his 80s he needed to find an assisted living facility where he could live life on his own terms. His only concession to the aging process was his mobility. Arthritis had robbed him of his vigor and freedom of movement, yet he prided himself on the fact that he could still do a lot of things on his own; he just needed some help with other tasks of daily life. Wynwood at Chapel Hill has provided him with a home and new life that he adores. We have visited monthly during the year that he has been a resident and we are so happy with his new living arrangement. He had just returned from a shopping trip to Trader's Joe when we made our last visit to see him. Of course he had to update us on the yoga classes that he is now taking. In fact this exercise program has even helped lessen the pain caused by his arthritis. Each day the seniors at Wynwood have a list of activities in which they can participate if they choose to do so. Meals are simply wonderful and the cooking staff always uses the freshest ingredients possible. In my opinion, these meals are better prepared and tastier than those dishes being served at a majority of local restaurants. I have eaten the grilled fish, roast chicken and perfectly cooked asparagus- and cannot say enough complimentary things about the talented chefs. These individuals can make low calorie, low salt recipes taste positively wonderful. My uncle has never been a fan of low sodium meals, but even he has now been won over by the healthy, tasty meals that he gets to enjoy each day. Kudos to this facility and each staff member! "

"At Carolina Reserve of Durham I was able to observe how the technicians and the other staff interacted with the clients that they had there, and I liked what I saw. The staff seems to be really friendly, more of a family type of atmosphere, and that's what I wanted for my sister. The area is kept clean. There were activities that were posted that I saw up on the wall. I also looked at the types of menus and things that were also on the wall in the dining area. I felt that this would be a good place for my sister. The admission coordinator is really helpful. I can talk to her and she lets me know everything like updates and what's happening with physical therapy and whether or not they've gotten orders for certain things, so I can call the provider and say to them they need X, Y, and Z. It's more of a three-way conversation so that my sister can get everything that she needs. They're really on top of things at this point for me, and I'm happy to alleviate a lot of the stress that I was going through or what-have-you. It's a good fit. The amenities are nice. No issues or anything like that. My sister has her own little area. She pretty much can get comfortable in that area. There is a library. There is a common area where there's a television set in there, and then sometimes they have activities in that room. They have the activity room, too. So far, my sister has participated in bingo. I know there's a musician coming in tonight. I know they offer her things or whatever. I get the report as far as what's going on with her because I'm very involved in her care. I'm really happy with the care that she is receiving. "

"My mother has been at Spring Arbor since August, and so far, it has been really nice. They have very good food. I don't have any complaints. They have a lot of activities for the people there. They give her more hands-on care and they make sure she gets her meals. It is clean and doesn't stink. It is something within her price range. I would recommend this place. "

"I went to Brookdale MacArthur Park for my mother. Right now, it would be the first on our list because of its proximity to our house. We thought it was very nice. The people there were very nice. It seemed to be very nice. All the residents were very friendly. The scale of the community was very nice. It was not overwhelming. It was just like walking into your living room. It was really nice that way. It seemed like the food was OK. The residents were active, and friendly. They were very nicely invested in the residents. The room was fine for my mother. Everything was small. "

"Reserve at Mills Farm is a brand-new facility, but a little more homey. It's rustic. The grounds have a pond nearby. It's very close to facilities like grocery stores and Costco. It's only three levels, and they move from independent living to memory care as well. I really liked their memory care concept, which is like cabins. You share a common area in a cabin with five other people, but you have individual rooms, so your staff ratio is very small. They have at least two to one person per patient or resident in the memory care. I really liked the staff ratio. I liked the pod concept instead of individual rooms down a long hallway. You're in a circular cabin, and you just come out into a common area when you want to be out and have your meals and so forth. It has a cozier effect. What I liked about these pods is that they are ranch-style with gardens around them, so they give you a feeling of safety without realizing that you can't wander out of the area. It's almost like a little home. They had a hairdresser onsite. They had a pharmacy onsite, so you could transfer all of your medicines to their pharmacy, and everything could be done in-house. All of the staff members were very caring, nice, and accommodating. They had a big community dining hall and a very nicely furnished ground floor, so you could walk out onto the patio."

"We had a good and informative visit to Brookdale Burlington. The lady who showed us some of the building was very, very nice. She offered a lot of information, was so friendly with the residents, and made us all welcome even though we were just looking. It has a full bathroom, and the one that we looked at was the medium size, which had two closets, because it could be a two-person bedroom. It had pull strings to alert the staff if there was a problem. They have two of those in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. It also has its own heating and air-conditioning unit. It was very nice, clean, and freshly painted, and you can hang your own pictures."

"We are very satisfied with Spring Arbor of Cary. They were very responsive to our request for a tour to see the facilities and to meet with the staff, and they were able to get my mom in very quickly. They've been very responsive to our questions or phone calls about how she's doing on any particular day. They do music therapy, chair yoga, and they have a walking club there. They also went to a Cinco de Mayo event recently."

"It has great surroundings and a quiet neighborhood -- the place to go for walks -- and it is a clean place. The staff people were very friendly. It was spacious and very adequate for my wife. She has Alzheimer's, and in some places we visited, they group people together for slideshows and whatever like a bunch of cattle, and I don't think they do that at Woodland Terrace. "

"Liselotte Carehome is private. There's only eight beds. It's kind of out in the country a little bit, so it's working quite well. I think, due to the fact that it's small, they really get individualized care. "

"Cambridge Hill is closer to me. The room could have one or two people in it. My wife is in a shared room. I think the staff is doing a good job. There are two groups a week that come, and on Sundays the different churches come and bring several of their members, and they sing us songs and give a little sermon. "

"I thought that LiveWell Assisted Living at Governors Club was a very nice facility. It's very intimate because it's in a house. The other thing that I noticed was that the staff there seemed to be exceptionally attentive to their clients. I saw a lot of interpersonal interaction between the staff and the patients or the residents. The residents were having their lunch at the time of my visit. They've got an in-house kitchen and one of the staff is preparing meals for them. There are always a few areas open for improvement, but in general, it's good. The staff who gave the tour was quite informative. They only have about five of six residents and they had one free room."

"My mom has moved into The Stratford. I chose that place for her because, number one, it is in Chapel Hill, and that's where she grew up, she has classmates there, and she has her two sisters there, and I was thinking that will make it easier for them to visit. Number two, as far as the facility, it is a good size, not too small and not too large, and their one-time community fee was not as exorbitant. My mom is in a shared room. It's nice. It has a sink and a bathroom within that shared space. The caregivers and the administrators are attentive. They seem to be active. They are on par with everybody else. I looked at the activity board and the activities would be the typical stuff. They have exercise, socializing, card playing, and some kind of little activities. It seems there's a weekly outing like to botanical gardens and that kind of stuff."

"I have been a resident of this fine community for seven years, and I welcome the opportunity to review it for interested retirees and their families. I truly believe that this facility is one of the best in the Southeast. It has a beautiful 160 acre campus, gracious and spacious villas and apartments, in addition to a beautifully decorated Assisted Living facility which offers apartments for singles or couples, and a nursing facility with excellent medical care for those who need skilled nursing. The food is outstanding, and the dining room immaculate, decorated charmingly and providing a lovely atmosphere for leisurely dining. The wellness program is outstandingl with many exercise classes, a large and well equipped fitness center, and a skilled and friendly staff. This not-for -profit community is owned by the residents, who take a very active role in program and committees. But the major joy of everyday life here is this: the residents themselves who are mostly highly educated, very sociable, and active in the community. There are varied and high-level cultural activities, including lectures, concerts, discussions and classes. All in all, the residents feel incredibly grateful to be living their later years in this wonderful community. "

"The facilities were well maintained and clean. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The housing is located in long tiers. In my cousin's case, the room looked out onto a brick wall across a short distance. Though significant, that was the only real aesthetic issue; the floors, walls, and furnishings in the common areas were fresh, in good condition, and comfortable. The food looked palatable (I did not have the opportunity to sample any of it personally), and my cousin was reasonably happy with the fare. Menu items included traditional breakfast items and standard fare for luncheon and dinner. Occasionally, an exotic dish would be offered. That was not important to my cousin, but some of the residents (and me, were I to be living there) really seemed to relish special menu items. Of course, many residents are on dietary restrictions that severely limit their choice. The staff will occasionally bring a surprise treat of ice cream that is uniformly well received. I would consider this facility if I needed to live with assistance. "
