"Cedar Ridge appeared to be very nice and clean, and the staff was very accommodating. The rooms were clean but on the small side. The residents were fine; they had their routines and were busy."

"My in-laws already moved in at Arbor Ridge and are settled and doing well. It's four years old, new, and has about 70 people who are all friendly. It's a nice, clean, and pretty place. The apartment is a two-bedroom with a small kitchen and a fair-sized, good living room. The residents exercise and go places. They have a full calendar of activities. The staff are always available, and residents always wear an alert button; if help is needed, they can call, and if they miss a meal, staff can call and check on them. There is assistance available if you wanted to pay extra but it's not considered an assistance living facility but a retirement community. The only thing I think they are missing is a porch. They have a big screened-in porch in the back, but I'd want my own little porch. "

"I found my sister a place at the independent living community of Holiday Forsyth Court in Winston-Salem. It was farther away than I wanted, but it seems to be a nice place. While the staff that works for the community is not medically trained, they have a contract with a home healthcare agency, which has a presence in the building, and that was the clincher for me. I like those people. They only do independent living there, although there is a structure for people who need a little assistance and monitoring. My sister's apartment is very nice. It was freshly painted and had new carpet. It's a studio apartment and meets her needs for not having too much space to manage. It's an older building, but it's very clean. It doesn't have an odor like some places can get. It smells clean, and they have bright rooms for people to do activities. They have an activity director who coordinates that. The space itself is well-maintained and appealing, but it's not glamorous. It's comfortable. The food is really pretty good, too. It's not institutional food. It's more like what you'd get at a restaurant for the most part. There are some days when it's not great. It means that it wouldn't be my choice if I had a menu. There is some ability to choose, but there's not a large menu. There are minimal selections, but there is some variety they do, and I think it's tasty, although sometimes it's not my cup of tea. They provide three meals a day. I don't have any experience with their actual activities, but I know they have a variety of things scheduled throughout the week for different interests. I would say it's affordable, because all the utilities are covered except for cable."

"My visit at Creekside Terrace was good. The living atmosphere was fine, I walked in and they were decorating for Easter. The staff looked pretty friendly, and they were very interactive with the residents. They were the most interactive that I saw. The dining room is like a restaurant."

"Harmony at Brookberry Farm gave us a good tour. It had wide halls, and they had beautiful places where you could sit. They didn't have a lot of residents since it's still pretty new. When we were there, everybody was sitting in a wheelchairs and watching TV. Everybody was asleep."

"WhiteStone is where I think my husband is going to go. They're building an expansion, and I think it won't be ready until next year. It's a continuing care community at Holden Road in Greensboro. We saw their independent living. It's like other continuing care places, and it is very expensive. It's not for everybody, but the people that are there on staff and the people that live there were extremely friendly and helpful. The facility was clean and just so beautiful. They keep the rooms in excellent condition."

"Friends Homes seamed to be a very delightful place to spend the golden years. Parking was very easy and convenient and located very close the building with lots of ways to enter provided you knew the security code. The walls are painted a nice shade of peach throughout most of the facility. The dining room is very nice with wooden tables and high backed chairs that roll over a thinly carpeted area. Employees seamed to be very nice and helpful when we ate in the dining room for lunch. Hallway's were very wide; wide enough for the residents to stroll amongst at their own passe. Doors to the resident's personal rooms were very homey with flowers outside their doors and sayings hung on the walls. Residents seemed very happy and staff very welcoming. Bathroom's were very nice and well kept up, fresh toilet paper, clean stalls, and very clean sinks. Was a bit warm throughout the facility but I would imagine the residents like it better that way. "

"My mom just moved to the skilled nursing part of Well-Spring, A Life Plan Community. Before that, she was in assisted living. It's a five-star facility with wonderful staff. It's beautiful and they serve wonderful food. They do a whole lot of activities. They have bingo, music, trivia games, ice cream socials every week, cookies and tea days a couple of times a week, happy hour with red and white wine once a week, movie days where they have popcorn, bridge playing, walks, and outside trips to grocery stores on their own shuttle bus. They also have a theater at the facility where you can come to watch performances such as Broadway series, a pool for water aerobics, Zumba, and other exercise classes."

"I toured The Carillon. It was nice. They were very welcoming. The rooms were small, but she said they were all the same size. They just arrange them differently. Some areas in the room are bigger than others, but it was nice. I just didn't like the idea of not having a dining room and having to be in Greensboro. Jen was helpful, answered all my questions, was friendly, and gave me a great tour. Everything was great. I have no complaints whatsoever."

"My father moved into Abbotswood at Irving Park. The facility was very clean when I went in. You didn't smell the urine smell that you smell in a lot of places. The nurse-to-patient ratio was very low. There are only about 15 or 25 people in a group, so my dad gets more attention. They give us a calendar for every month of the activities that they do. They have sing-alongs, movie theme days, and bingo. My dad's room is nice. He's in a room by himself with a nice, large bathroom, and a large area for furniture. He has enough space for a bed, a couch, a recliner, a table, and a dresser. So it's a pretty nice-sized room. Since he's been there, he's been eating pretty well. The staff that I've met and talked with are very, very nice. They seem to be very patient with him and work well with him. It's a little bit more expensive than I would have liked, but for what I'm paying for it, it's worth it."
