Greensboro, North Carolina, is a historic city that is ranked as one of the best places to retire in North Carolina, according to data gathered by Caring’s 2019 Senior Living Report. The city appeals to seniors with an interest in sporting events and those looking for a city with a low cost of living and easy access to outdoor activities. Greensboro experiences hot summers and mild winters, making it possible to explore all that the city has to offer throughout the year. The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey indicates that the average senior in Greensboro pays $4,195 per month for home care services and the same amount for home health care services. Home care differs from home health care in that it does not offer medical support and assistance. Seniors requiring hospital care will find all the services they need at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and the Kindred Hospital Greensboro, which is an acute care hospital that also treats chronically ill patients.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Greensboro, NC

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Greensboro Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Greensboro:

Weatherization Assistance Program

It enables seniors over the age of 60 to partake in a nutritious noon meal and have social time with others their age. After the meal, seniors participate in educational and cultural programs, field trips and health classes. There is no charge for the meal or any of the activities.

Greensboro Senior Center

Some of the activities offered include exercise classes, field trips and wellness classes. Educational seminars are held on senior health, caregiving and dealing with grief.

Meals on Wheels

Address: 1401 Benjamin Parkway, Greensboro, NC 27408
Phone Number: (336) 333-6981

The Greensboro Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that delivers meals to homebound seniors throughout the region. Volunteers deliver one hot meal each day from Monday to Friday. Special diets can be accommodated if requested in advance. There is a small charge for each meal but financial assistance is available. Volunteers check on the well-being of each senior when they deliver the meal and notify the authorities if there is an issue.
