Avalon Park Retirement Residence was very, very sad and very, very dirty. The administrator had no idea we were coming. It was very dingy. It backs up to the turnpike. It was so loud you couldn't even hear what the staff was saying outside. It was dark inside. The administrator was clueless. He had no idea we were coming. They're just totally unprepared. I would never let my mother go there. They showed us a menu and most breakfasts were cold cereal. The dining room was very dark. All the window shades were pulled down. I couldn't see outside. No daylight and it was loud because it backs right up to the turnpike.

Hi Michelle, thanks for visiting our facility along with your mom, Janet. I don't know why you considered us unprepared for your tour, that morning we had a few tours of the facility and I had mentioned that you were one of them, but I was onsite and more than happy to show you around and answer any questions you had. We do not have "model" units on display like some of the larger facilities you may have seen, but we actually prefer to show people the actual units that are available. I had mentioned on the tour that we were in the process of converting some units previously occupied by men into female units. So we showed you a unit that was occupied by some women, which was a nice unit but if the occupants wanted to keep the shades closed, that is their personal preference that I had to respect. As for the menu, it was fixed menu, but there were other choices than just cold cereal, such as "hot" cereals, breads bagels, muffins or sometimes pastries, proteins such as eggs, bacon or plant based protein options (we do have these to accommodate vegetarians), and a choice of juices or tea or coffee. We even do bagels and smoked salmon as some of our residents enjoy this. Yes we are located adjacent to the Turnpike but in my 14 years of working at the facility and doing tours like yours I've rarely had people complain to me about that, it is what it is, and frankly I feel that we weren't having a hard time conversing during the tour. I have to say that I was suprised because your mom expressed that she did say that she liked the facility and seemed enthusiastic at the prospect of having a private room in one of the units that we were converting to female use. All in all, we did try our best on our tour to show you the facility, we are sorry we were not the right place for your mom, but we wish you and her the best!

We saw the Avalon Park Retirement Residence. I would not leave my animal there. I didn't like it at all. The rooms were a 1. If it could be zero, it would be zero. They were dirty, nasty, and there were feces. I don't know how they are even licensed. There's not enough staff in there to tend to all the residents that are there. I was not happy with that at all. The staff during the tour was OK to the best that can be expected. She was knowledgeable about what she was doing, but I was unhappy with the place. It was a horrible experience. It's pretty much a good location, but the facility was not upkept at all.

The staff at Avalon Park Retirement Residence was very friendly and they were very helpful. I also had a chance to look at the different units and they were clean. The folks that I ran into were very nice so it would appear that I would very much consider placing my husband there. I'm still waiting to hear from the owner to see whether or not it's something possible. It's assisted living and the rooms were clean. I got a chance to see different sizes for different accommodation situations and I was pleased with them. They said that they offer haircuts and stuff like that. The room that they used for the activities wasn't really big but it was small and cozy enough so the folks could get to know each other.

I ended up putting my mom in Avalon Park and then they said that she wasn't a good fit, so then I had to take her out of there. If they would have done a better assessment upon my mom living there, we wouldn't have had to go through that. The staff is nice and very attentive. The rooms are really spacious. They had my mom in her own room and it had a community area that she shared with another resident there, so it was really nice. They weren't having activities because of COVID.

Avalon Park Retirement Residence was great, everything during the tour has been very good. The minority of the staff is very nice to my parents. They always check in on them, they check when they eat and if they've done their personal stuff like brush their teeth and so on. Their room has its own living room with 2 beds and a bathroom. It's pretty good. My parents also like their food very much, they play bingo, games, and keep the residents entertained in the dining area. So far, the people have been very accommodating and very nice.

I didn't like Avalon Park Retirement Residence. I didn't like the area. The room is very small. I just didn't see much comfort in it. It's just like a room where you can put one person, one bed, and a little dresser. It's one of those places where you go, and you just don't like it when you first go in. It's a small compound. It was not bad, but it was not what I expected.

Hello RD, I am the Administrator of the facility and I usually handle the Caring.com tours. I do not recall ever meeting you or speaking with you on the phone but as you have reviewed our facility I would like to address some of the points you make. First off, I'm not sure what rooms you saw but we have a variety of rooms available depending on preferences and budget. We have everything ranging from small one room private rooms with shared bathrooms to studio style apartments minus the kitchen. We have large private rooms some with a living room and separate bedroom areas with their own front door entrances. We do have shared rooms as well as many people cannot afford private rooms but are looking for quality care for themselves or their loved ones. Our goal has always been to provide a safe comfortable living environment that can accommodate people over a variety of price ranges and we charge no community fees or hidden fees for many services we provide such as laundry, housekeeping, room meal delivery, etc. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the residents are well taken care of. We provide free haircuts w a professional stylist and manicure services for residents who wish to receive them...at no additional cost to care. We have excellent food and organized activities and entertainment for our residents. Our records with the state licensure authority, LTC ombundsman and local health department are excellent...we truly take resident care seriously at Avalon Park as we have had many satisfied residents and families over the years. I do not think it is a fair review to give a facility 2 stars simply based on your initial impression of our facility and I'm not sure you had a chance to see all the options we have to offer. If you wish you can contact us or speak to your placement advisor about rescheduling a tour and I would be more than happy to personally show you around and speak with you regarding the specifics of what you are looking for. Thank you and have a good day!

Avalon Park's rooms were homey. I liked that they knew their residents very well. I was really impressed with the staff. They have a salon, a podiatrist that comes in, and a doctor on staff.

The administration and staff of Avalon Park retirement residence are the most compassionate and caring crew I have seen within this industry. They have a high level of ethics and have treated my mother with the dignity and care she deserves. She is now on her 80th birthday but very opinionated. She has been with Avalon Park for over 3 years now. I recommend Andrew and his crew anytime. Keep up the good work!

The Avalon Park Retirement Residence appeared well-maintained from the outside, with a nice exterior and lovely courtyard. The main foyer receiving area was like that of a a quaint country bed and breakfast. The exercise room had nice equipment and they also offered instructed classes. The communal areas all had interesting activities occurring, from reading to games and resident interactions. It was clear that the residents were enjoying themselves. Outings scheduled included restaurants, to art museums, the library, films, fine dining and theater. They also host parties and gatherings for residents, which they encourage family and friends to attend. Each living unit was a nice size and beautifully decorated. The dining areas were restaurant style, as were the meals. The food choices looked nutritious and delicious, as well as the regular snacks - offered regularly. This is a lovely facility with caring and attentive staff. All of the resident's needs appeared to be met in a caring and kind manner.
