Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Sun City Center

  • The overall cost of living in Sun City Center is more than 4% below the national median and 7% lower than the statewide average. A big factor is the lower cost of housing, which doesn’t necessarily impact seniors in assisted living. However, health care costs here are also lower than the national average by about 1.5%.
  • Although sales tax rates are higher in Hillsborough County compared to 84.5% of other Florida cities and counties, seniors benefit from groceries being tax-exempt. They also save on prescription and nonprescription drug purchases, which are taxed at 1% instead of the full 7% sales tax rate, which consists of 6% in state and 1% in local taxes.
  • Despite slightly inflated sales taxes, Florida is tax-friendly to seniors overall. It doesn’t charge a state income tax, so retirees won’t lose money on their Social Security benefits or other types of retirement income.
  • Although the community is named Sun City Center, it gets lots of rain annually. However, it doesn’t get any snow, which is convenient for seniors who are tired of shoveling sidewalks or living in a cold environment. The coldest month of the year has an average low of 50 degrees, which is well above freezing. Sun City also gets lots of sunny days, at an average of 244 per year. Overall, the weather is pleasant much of the year with seven comfortable months when temperatures range between 70 and 85 degrees.
  • Sun City Center seniors benefit from having a local hospital to meet their medical needs. South Bay Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility with an on-site emergency department and a medical surgical ICU. It was rated high performing in treating COPD and nationally recognized by the Joint Commission for treating stroke, total hip and knee replacements, sepsis and heart failure.
