Sun City Center is a census-designated place in southern Hillsborough County. It’s also an age-restricted community, so seniors will find lots of activities appropriate for older adults. Sun City Center’s population is nearing 31,000 and over 22,000 of these residents are aged 65 or older. Although the community is small, it’s still big enough to offer lots of shopping and dining options and boasts its own hospital and about seven golf courses. Seniors who want to retain their independence but need help with daily living tasks and housekeeping services may benefit from the homelike environment found in assisted living communities. The average cost of assisted living in Sun City Center is $3,888 per month, which is slightly higher than the state average but quite a bit less than the national average.

This guide details various aspects of assisted living in Sun City Center, including the cost, as well as cost comparisons with other Florida cities and senior care options. It also includes a list of benefits and drawbacks of retiring in Sun City Center and resources that provide various services to seniors.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Sun City Center

Assisted living facilities in Florida receive oversight and licensing through the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, Division of Health Quality Assurance. Its Bureau of Field Operations does on-site surveys through offices located across the state. The St. Petersburg Field Office is responsible for monitoring assisted living facilities in Hillsborough County, including those in Sun City Center.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Sun City Center

  • The overall cost of living in Sun City Center is more than 4% below the national median and 7% lower than the statewide average. A big factor is the lower cost of housing, which doesn’t necessarily impact seniors in assisted living. However, health care costs here are also lower than the national average by about 1.5%.
  • Although sales tax rates are higher in Hillsborough County compared to 84.5% of other Florida cities and counties, seniors benefit from groceries being tax-exempt. They also save on prescription and nonprescription drug purchases, which are taxed at 1% instead of the full 7% sales tax rate, which consists of 6% in state and 1% in local taxes.
  • Despite slightly inflated sales taxes, Florida is tax-friendly to seniors overall. It doesn’t charge a state income tax, so retirees won’t lose money on their Social Security benefits or other types of retirement income.
  • Although the community is named Sun City Center, it gets lots of rain annually. However, it doesn’t get any snow, which is convenient for seniors who are tired of shoveling sidewalks or living in a cold environment. The coldest month of the year has an average low of 50 degrees, which is well above freezing. Sun City also gets lots of sunny days, at an average of 244 per year. Overall, the weather is pleasant much of the year with seven comfortable months when temperatures range between 70 and 85 degrees.
  • Sun City Center seniors benefit from having a local hospital to meet their medical needs. South Bay Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility with an on-site emergency department and a medical surgical ICU. It was rated high performing in treating COPD and nationally recognized by the Joint Commission for treating stroke, total hip and knee replacements, sepsis and heart failure.
