Financial Assistance for Home Care in Sun City Center, FL

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Sun City Center Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Sun City Center:

ResourceContactAddressService
Home Care for the Elderly Program(850) 414-20004040 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee, FL 32399-7000The Home Care for the Elderly Program provides basic financial subsidies to help seniors in private shared housing arrangements stay afloat. The basic subsidy is $160 per month, but participants may apply for special subsidies to pay for their medication, assistive devices and other similar needs. Florida residents age 60 and over are eligible for this program; over 150,000 checks are sent out each year.
Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program(800) 963-5337Tampa Service Center, 9393 North Florida Avenue, Tampa, FL 33612This program works to rescue older Florida residents from dangers caused by heating or cooling emergencies in their households. Beneficiaries of the EHEAP program may receive up to $1,000 per season; heating season is defined as October through March, and cooling season is defined as April through September. Benefits may be used to pay vendors directly or to replace broken HVAC equipment. A household must have at least one member 60 years of age or older living in it to apply; income limits apply as well.
Bureau of Elder Rights(850) 414-20004040 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee, FL 32399-7000This state agency’s portfolio includes an Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative that helps primary caregivers through respite care and support groups, an elder abuse prevention program that works to combat neglect and various types of exploitation and a long-term care ombudsman program that advocates for the rights and safety of seniors in such care arrangements. Its Florida Abuse Hotline (1-800-962-2873) helps seniors and concerned third parties quickly report any suspected cases of elder abuse.
