Altamonte Springs is a diverse resort community situated in east-central Florida’s Seminole County, about 25 miles from the Atlantic coast. This suburban city is located just north of Orlando, so Disney World and SeaWorld are only about 30 minutes away when the grandkids come to visit. While its mild winters have attracted snowbirds to the area for many years, Altamonte Springs also makes a great retirement destination. About 6,650 of the city’s roughly 46,200 residents are aged 65 or older.
Seniors who wish to remain independent but need some assistance with everyday tasks, personal care and housekeeping services find what they need in assisted living facilities. These homelike communities provide personalized supportive services in a safe, secure setting. The average cost of assisted living in Altamonte Springs is $3,700 per month, which is the same as the state average but lower than the national median.
This guide provides an overview of assisted living in Altamonte Springs, including cost comparisons with nearby cities and alternate senior care options. It also lists some benefits and drawbacks of retiring in Altamonte Springs and available aging-related resources.

The food is not what you’d want for your loved one! They take the cheap way out. For the price we pay, they should be providing fresh food, not boxed instant stuff with chemicals, not Crystal Light with Aspartame to drink!! Aspartame causes cancer! A facility should not be serving this to anyone! I’ve had to ask for fruit juice and real food. The place isn’t clean. A rat was on the porch! I cleaned 2 patio chairs to sit on with my father and left the dirty paper towel on the patio table. That paper towel was still there a MONTH later! I checked every time I visited. Unreal! The dust on bedroom furniture was thick before it got cleaned. They DOUBLED HIS HEART MEDICATION for a week before it was caught. That could have killed him!! They "forget" meds. When I asked them to change his bandage last week, I was told "chill out and take your meds". What???!!! My father’s health should be their top priority!! Several other residents have said same negative comments on the food. Just not good at all. The owner is sickly, sits and watches tv with oxygen on all day. She doesn’t get up and clean or check on residents. Lazy. I’m moving my father in a few weeks when another facility has opening that is closeby so I can check on him daily.

I liked everything, the cleanliness, the staff, the rooms, and the size of the rooms. They have assisted living and memory care. The staff during the tour took the time to ask questions about what I was looking for. She asked questions about what the resident would want. She took time to get to know me and a little bit about the resident. She was very knowledgeable about the facility and answered any of my questions. The food was excellent. They have a front patio and a back patio, they have a little area where you can walk in the back, and a gazebo. The price is just a little high. Her room has a handicap-accessible bathroom and it has enough room. She’s in one of the smaller rooms, but she has enough room for a sitting area and then her bed as well.

The residents all seem to be happy enjoying hot cocoa and singing carols. They even had residents from their memory care over on AL side singing. The staff and residents act as if they are one big family. If I had to move my parents this would be one of the places on the top of my list. I had the pleasure of staying for lunch and the cook Belinda really put out some of the best food I’ve ever seen in a facility I could eat a meal from her every day. Everything was just so clean and nice you couldn’t ask for anything nicer for your parents. All I can say is Palmetto Landing keep up the awesome work.

They have activities but they do not encourage friendships or socialization with each other. It is more like sheep following the activity person. Most of the Med Tech are very nice however there are always a few who rush through assistants with the residents. I found that there was a shortage of Med Tech in the afternoon to evening hours (1 person for the whole floor). Beware of the extra help you will get charged for the slighted bit of help needed. I found it hard to contact the nurse or director except through email and even that was a battle. My Mom is a sweet and very compliant person but she was not happy and her emotional/mental state started to decline. She has since moved. I noticed her spirits have lifted. Moral is don’t judge a book by its cover.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Altamonte Springs
The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, Division of Health Quality Assurance oversees long-term care facilities statewide, including licensing and regulating assisted living communities. The Bureau of Field Operations performs on-site surveys, and the Orlando Field Office is responsible for monitoring assisted living facilities in Seminole County, including those in Altamonte Springs.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Altamonte Springs
- The cost of living in Altamonte Springs is lower than the national average by about 3%, and it’s about 5.5% lower than the state average. Grocery and health care costs in the city are slightly below the national averages, and housing is nearly 15% lower.
- Altamonte Springs’ violent crime ranking is 16.6 compared to the national average of 22.7 and the state average of 23.4. Crime rates are scored on a scale of one to 100, with one being the best. Property crime in Altamonte Springs is higher than the state and national averages.
- Retirees in Florida benefit from living in a tax-friendly state. Florida doesn’t charge a state income tax, so retirees won’t pay taxes on their Social Security benefits and other retirement income.
- In Seminole County, seniors pay 6% state sales tax and 1% county tax for a combined sales tax rate of 7%. Although this is relatively average compared to rates nationwide, it’s higher than 84.5% of other Florida cities and counties, but groceries and prescriptions are tax-exempt.
- Seniors needing physical rehabilitation or assistive technology may benefit from services at Altamonte Springs’ Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital. The city doesn’t have a local general medical hospital, but Altamonte Springs’ proximity to Orlando means there’s one close by. Top-rated AdventHealth Orlando is only about six miles away and is regionally ranked the number-one hospital in Orlando and number three in Florida. It’s also nationally ranked in three adult specialties and rated as high-performing in six adult specialties and 16 procedures or conditions.
- Altamonte Springs has a rainy climate and receives an average of 53 inches of rainfall annually compared to the national average of 38 inches, but it doesn’t get any snow. Although summers can get hot and very humid, winters are extremely mild, scoring a nine out of 10 on the comfort index, with 10 being the best. The average overnight wintertime low in January is 47 degrees.
Paying for Assisted Living in Altamonte Springs
According to Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey, the average cost of assisted living in Altamonte Springs is $3,700 per month, which mirrors the statewide average. However, it’s lower than the national average by $600 per month.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
The rate paid in Altamonte Springs matches the Florida average, but it’s lower than what seniors pay in surrounding cities. The average in Lakeland ($3,945) is $245 higher, and the cost in Deltona ($4,050) averages $350 more. The local cost is also $400 less than Palm Bay’s average of $4,100 per month, and a whopping $1,250 lower than the $4,950 paid in The Villages.
