"We used Right at home for the end of my Father's life care. Right at Home has a majority of excellent care givers. One was not and we asked that they not come again. We needed medication administration and Right at Home was unable to administer for us. The caregivers arrived on time and would usually jump if asked to do something. If one does not need medication administration, I recommend them . Thank you for your assistance in the care of my father at the end of his life."

"They have the most personable care. The owner of StartLight really paid attention to my mother and that’s really a big help. The caregiver named Amber is really a good fit for my mom. Through the interview process that we had with the owner, she really narrowed it down to what my mom’s likes and dislikes were. She did a great job in matching the caregiver with my mother. Amber is a very caring person, respectful, calm, and listens to what my mom’s needs are. "

"I would like to give praise and recommendation for Celia from Senior Helpers who is a caregiver for my Dad, Archie. Celia demonstrates excellent care and sincere concern for her patients. She provides a service that extends over an above that which is expected of her. She amazes us everyday with her positive attitude, willingness to do anything to help my parents and truly cares about them. It's not just a job for her, she treats them as her own parents. We talk everyday and brainstorm over issues that come up. She has made some valuable suggestions to guide and help me provide care for my parents when she is not there. Celia has exceeded our expectations and my parents and I are extremely grateful to have her. "

"We were in a tough situation and needed caregivers for my dad on very short notice. He needed pretty involved care since he had later stage Parkinsons. Their team was able to work with all of our requests and matched us with a caregiver in less than a day. The caregiver even had great advice for us when we were looking for different treatments for his sore. We would highly recommend Polaris to anyone in need of a caregiver"

"We have just started using 1Heart Caregiver Services - Campbell Campbell, CA. They're great. When we called the agency, they listened to what we wanted and quickly followed up. We had an in-home visit with the girl who runs it. She came out with one of the client managers who helped with the scheduling. They came out and talked to my mom to get a clear picture of what she wanted. Then they matched her with the first caregiver, whom my mom loved. She was very outgoing and was attentive to my mother. She looked for things to do and did everything. She chatted quite a bit and communicated with my mom. Sometimes we'll get caregivers from other agencies that just sort of sit there and don't do anything, don't say anything, and you have to keep prodding them, but this one did a great job, and my mom is thrilled with her. They're going to be covering every weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. They do some housekeeping and cook breakfast on the weekends. The caregiver cleaned the bathroom and helped with some personal care for my mother. She helps her bathe and take a shower. She did some laundry, too. Then, she is her companion. My mother had a nice time. They're very easy to communicate with. We text if we have any questions or whatnot. Yesterday, we discussed the dates of who was coming for every weekend. We got the names, and everything has been summarized and scheduled."

"I have used Home Instead for various family members over the past 20 years. I have also referred many friends to them. They are extremely understandable with what each individual may or may not need. And the folks that have provided the care have been for the most part, excellent. The current caregiver my aunt has, has been with us 8 years and she is wonderful. Don't know what we'd do without her."

"Firstlight Homecare was very professional. My experiences with the caregivers and staff has been so much better than some of the agencies I have dealt with in the past. Truly compassionate, skilled, and friendly! They were very quick to find a last minute caregiver for my mom. The last caregiver from another agency did not show up and we had nowhere to turn. When I contacted FirstLight, the staff was very understanding and quick to act. They came to the house accompanied with a caregiver and introduced the caregiver to us. They are truly great people. "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help to pay for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Palo Alto:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palo Alto Utility Rate Assistance Program | (650) 329-2333 | 250 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94301 | Senior citizens who earn no more than 50% of the area median income or who have a medical condition that requires increased energy use for climate controls or medical equipment may qualify for a 25% discount on their gas and electric bills and a 20% discount on wastewater fees. For a one-person household, applicants must earn no more than $36,300 per year. Seniors who are claiming a medical need must provide a certification from a physician. Individuals who need one-time emergency assistance can apply for help from the city through ProjectPLEDGE. |
| Santa Clara County Senior Nutrition Program | (408) 975-4860 | 353 W. Julian, San Jose, CA 95110 | Adults who are unable to shop for groceries or prepare their own meals due to a physical limitation or isolation may sign up for Meals on Wheels or congregate meals offered by the Senior Nutrition Program. In 2019, the State Clara Department of Social Services served 1.2 million hot meals to local seniors. Individuals who are unable to visit congregate dining sites may qualify for home-delivered Meals on Wheels provided by Sourcewise or The Health Trust. A nominal contribution is expected although financial assistance is available to low-income residents. |
| Parcel Tax Exemptions | (650) 329-3980 | 25 Churchill Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94306 | Seniors who live in Santa Clara County may qualify for an exemption that eliminates parcel taxes that are used to support the school system. The Palo Alto Unified School District is one of 23 school systems in the county that offers this exemption. Homeowners who are 65 or older, have a disability or receive SSI may qualify. Since the exemption began in 2001, it has saved local taxpayers more than $15 million. Homeowners must apply for an exemption or refund annually. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
