Built at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, the city of Sacramento sprawls out into the surrounding green space with just the tallest buildings visible above the unbroken carpet of trees. Nearly 57,000 of the city’s 466,000 residents are seniors age 65 and over, with thousands more residing in seniors-only trailer communities and apartment complexes in the surrounding cities. Several towns ring Sacramento, and the entire area functions as a single urban entity. The bus and rail system, Regional Transit, offers discount fares to seniors on scheduled routes from Park District-sponsored meetings of the Widowed Persons Association of California in the north area to senior nature classes taught at the Sacramento Zoo in the south area.
To help seniors discover the most senior-friendly locations around the country, Caring.com conducted a new study, “The Best and Worst Places for Senior Living.” The Caring Senior Living Report analyzes and ranks 300 cities and 50 states on the quality of senior living in that area. The cities were graded using 46 metrics across five categories: Health Care, Senior Living & Housing, Affordability, Quality of life, and Transportation.
