There are around 650,000 Californians with Alzheimer's disease and the state established the California Alzheimer's Disease Centers (CADCs) in 1984 to research the condition and provide quality care to Californians living with it. In the city of Carmichael, where over 19 percent of the population is aged 65 and over, there are five memory care facilities that specialize in dementia care with another 26 in nearby communities.
These facilities are called Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly and are licensed and monitored by the California Adult Care Licensing Program. There are specific requirements for the building, staff numbers and staff training that must be met by facilities that cater to residents with dementia.
