"Virginian was the one I liked the most, but it was an independent living facility. I didn't want to move from one independent to another, but it was a nice place. I would have loved to move there. They had ground-floor apartments with patios and balconies on the other floors. They had a nice puzzle room. The food was decent. They did a lot of things that would be covered in an assisted living facility, but they weren't chartered that way, so I would not have been able to easily carry my VA aid and assistance over there to help pay for it. The food was very good. It was clean as could be. The staff was outstanding. The facility was very well taken care of."

"I have spoke with Christine several times while looking for a facility for my mother. I must say she is top notch and a compassionate person and a very understanding person. I am in high hopes that this is were my mother will be. I have no doubts anout the loving care my mom would get from Commonwealth Senior Living. "

"I toured Auburn Hill. It was wonderful. It was on the water reservoir. It's a beautiful place. I loved the water and the facility. The memory care portion of that was very impressive, but the driving distance and the traffic were just way too much for my friend's husband. It was a great facility. I'd like to be there. I loved it, but they wouldn't bill insurance. They had areas for the people in memory care that were outside and very nice, but didn't have as much freedom moving around. One thing I liked about their memory care was that it was fairly small. The smaller the patient population, the more attentive the staff are going to be to them, and they were well-staffed for memory care. They were wonderful and spent plenty of time with us. It was great."

"I went to Arden Courts of Richmond, and the community is excellent. It's a wonderful location for anyone with memory care issues if you can afford it. The facility provides an open, non-restrictive environment for persons with memory care who desire to walk and wander around. The staff was excellent. The rooms were exceptional, and the atmosphere of that facility was a five."

"Sunrise at Bon Air was a nice facility. The building was very homey. I thought the residents that we talked to seemed very happy. The apartments were nice and the staff that we talked to seemed knowledgeable and caring, but not as expert as the other place I went to. We didn't talk to any people who were caring for the residents on a one-on-one basis, but we talked more to the management-type people, and they seemed very nice and very caring, They just didn't seem as knowledgeable about the medical stuff. It's very expensive."

"I enjoyed my tour at Heritage Oaks, I liked it. I like that as a community, they have activities, it's a structured environment, and it's a nice and clean place. The apartment I saw had a nice design, roomy, with its own kitchen and bathroom. It was a nice and spacious apartment. The staffs who accommodated me during the tour were friendly and helpful. I also saw a gym, on Fridays they take the residents wherever they want to go. They would take them out to dinners and come back to pick them up. So I like the way their transportation system was set up, it's overall a nice place."

"I like Bickford of Chesterfield for my aunt because of the genuine interaction between the staff and the residents. It's a very home-like atmosphere. The person who gave the tour was very informative, I liked how she interacted with the residents, she seemed to genuinely know them and they seemed happy. They had a salon, they do outings, they have an activities coordinator who does a lot of activities with them on-site, they have movie nights, they celebrate different holidays, and they have music and games."

"The Crossings at Ironbridge seemed to be nice. The staff seemed to be nice. The people that we were able to see and talk to seemed to be happy there. They have activities. They have different people that come and do activities with them. They take them to different places. The layout was easy to get around. It has restaurants nearby and a hospital that's probably within 15 minutes."

"My mother was in the assisted living of Spring Arbor Cottage of Salisbury and just transferred to memory care. So far, they're very professional. They matched everything we were looking for. They've got an in-house physician and a pharmacy. They've got activity coordinators and cleaning people. They have well-stocked cafeterias and kitchens, and they do great meals. So far, we've been very pleased with the service that we receive from them. I have tried the food. It's very good. It's more like a dining room, not really a cafeteria. They actually bring the food just like they would at a restaurant. We've been very pleased. There's nothing that they haven't been able to handle at this point in time. They've been really good. The staff is excellentL the nurses, the aides, the administration, and the health department. They are all very, very good. The activities are fine. They have them all day long every day. I think any family would be very, very satisfied with this facility."

"My friend will move into Spring Arbor of Salisbury Assisted Living. The biggest factor was that they were willing to bill the insurance directly instead of having the client pay up front, and then wait for reimbursement. This was the only facility that was willing to do that. Everything we saw was excellent. The rooms are an adequate size. The bathroom is great. The menu looked good. One of the things I liked about memory care is that they don't give too many options to people with dementia, as opposed to looking at a menu with eight things on it. They will select from a couple. If they don't want either one of those, there's something else they can offer them. Their care is truly geared toward those with memory issues. I also liked the facility. They have an outside porch with rockers, screened-in, and they go outside. It's all open and beautiful, but there's no exit from the outside area. You can go out and be with nature without worrying about them wandering off. So, it's very secure."

"We toured Brookdale Midlothian. My friend enjoyed that. Her problem with that one was she felt more like a hotel setting, not a home setting but the food was good. We had lunch there. She was happy with all of it and said it was a very pleasant experience, and that's why she would like to go back and give it a second look. The staff was very lovely and helpful. It would serve her well. Everything was lovely, and she was very happy with it. They have the exercise, they have the community center where they can meet with other residents and she was very pleased."

"I went to Darby House and filled out an application form, but they have a six-month to one-year waiting list. The place was nice and large. It's well located. It looked very clean and efficient. I actually talked to a few residents there who said they liked it there. The staff was efficient and very polite. They answered all my questions. They had a little gym, a game room, a WiFi hook up, and they had a business room for computers. I felt comfortable there."

"I have visited Tuckahoe Pines Retirement Community, which is a country club community. It was absolutely beautiful. The apartments were beautiful, and the facilities were outstanding. It was also higher priced. Their cheapest apartment was more expensive than the most expensive apartment in the place I ended up choosing. All they had was independent living. The people that I was in contact with were marvelous. If you drive upfront and hand the concierge your key, they'll park your car for you. They really go all out, but it wasn't in my price range. I wasn't crazy about the way they served their meals. It was kind of like going through a school lunch line. You got a tray and went down the line. You say what you want, and they put each thing on your plate. Whereas in the other community, it was like a restaurant. A waitress would come to your table, and she would take your order. You would have all kinds of choices. You make those choices, and then she brings it to you. I just didn't like that aspect when it comes to their food service, but the facilities there are gorgeous."

"I went to Sunrise of Richmond. That's where I was going to place my mom until she was very adamant that she did not want to go back into a nursing home as long as the doctor okayed it, and that's the only reason I didn't go. I'm going to keep them in mind for when she does need one though. I've kept in touch with Christine, who is the person that does all the tours and the intakes. I've kept in touch with her because she pretty much knows exactly what's going on. She was very friendly and very informative. I liked her a lot. She was very down to earth. Because she has an older parent as well, so she understood all my concerns, and she was very sweet. Our tour ended up being a two-hour chat session, so she took her time with me, and she didn't rush me through anything. It was beautiful. If I could live there, I would live there. All the nurses that I talked to are very nice. I liked it. It was all-inclusive. They had the hairdressers there, they had the doctor on site. Also, they take them out a couple of times a week just to get them out into the community to take them shopping for clothes and to go to the grocery store. They take them out places, take them out to parks, and take them out to do activities. I thought that was awesome that they do that at least a couple of times a week. I looked at everything, and it was all-inclusive. If I had decided to go there, I would not have needed to go anywhere to get my mom's hair done or the doctors or anything like that. The rooms are beautiful. Every room has a great big picture window in it. I looked at a one-bedroom for my mom because it was just her, but even the studio apartments were huge. If my mother would have gone for a studio, it would have been fine, too. They're huge. They've got everything other than a stove. It's wonderful there. The rooms were huge, very well lit, and they have windows in every room there. The scenery is also beautiful. They have patios outside to where you can go and sit. They have gazebos outside if you want to go sit but don't want to be in the sun. They have everything for everybody out there. It was wonderful."

"My mom has moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at the West End. The day we moved in, they were wonderful. They helped me with everything. I could not have been more pleased. They have a salon, and they give you towels. They supply a lot of things. They have music and they have different programs. My mom will be 101 in December, so she's not doing a lot of activities, but they do have a lot to offer. My mom says the food is very good. The building is very well taken care of. The staff members have all been wonderful. Regarding activities, they have a lot of bingo and cards. I have seen residents out doing activities and they seem to be having a good time. Overall, we're very, very happy where my mom is at now."

"I toured Sunrise Villa Tuckahoe. We liked everything, the options and different living possibilities, whether it be a studio, a one-bedroom, or a two-bedroom. The woman who showed us around, Ashley, was fantastic and answered all our questions. It just seemed like a very nice living community. We've dealt with her several times, and she always contacts you right back. Their dining area looked nice. The menu looked nice, but we didn't taste anything. They had movie nights, bingo, a small library, and a nail salon. They drove you back and forth to doctor's appointments. There seemed to be a lot of amenities."
