"We are using the in-home care services of Right at Home Chesterfield, VA, for my husband. They have caregivers who come in for a specific number of hours a week. They do bed baths, wash and blow-dry his hair, and trim his beard. They help feed him as he needs it, although usually I do most of the feeding, and of course, change him as needed. I have had some wonderful lady caregivers who come in here and help with him. He is not a hard person to get along with, but if he doesn't like you, you'd know it. Some of them he's gotten fond of. We haven't been doing this long, but a couple of them are already almost like family because they care. Their scheduling is very accommodating to us, too. If something comes up and I need someone, I've been able to get it."

"Julie at Home Instead has been taking care of my mom at night for over 6 months now. Due to my mom's many health issues and dementia she can either be a very high maintenance patient with high levels of agitation/anxiety or very easy going and pleasant and is always a fall risk. Thru all of mom's ups and down, Julie has been a steady presence taking care of mom. Julie always lets me know what exactly is going on with mom when I ask which is important to me since I live in another state and Julie spends more time with her. In addition to taking such good care of mom, what I love most is that Julie always tries to engage my mother in conversation and even manages to get my mom laugh sometimes."

"We got Care Dot Homecare Agency for my grandfather. I love the service. It's very affordable, they provide light housekeeping, they cook small meals, change him, bathe him, provide medication management, and help with doctors' appointments. My grandfather loves the nurses that come in. They're very reliable, very attentive, so nice, and so helpful. It's amazing. There are two who come in, one in the morning, and one in the evening, four hours at a time seven days a week. There were no issues with the management and the schedule."

"Rolanda has helped us find wonderful home care workers for both my parents and my mother-in-law. We first reached out about my parents after my father suffered a significant injury, and we needed almost immediate help with my mother. Her staff helped with the return of my father to his home, facilitating his trips to therapy, daily care, etc. When my mother-in-law was injured, Rolanda also found us a staff member who could provide her with help in our home three mornings a week. The staff is so dedicated and compassionate. They have formed wonderful relationships with our parents. It is a tremendous relief to know they are so well cared for when you leave them. Rolanda does a great job of matching you with the right staff member. We highly recommend Dedicated Hearts and Hands."

"We currently have ameriCARE Richmond to help my mom. For the time being, we have one person coming for 4 hours on Wednesdays, and she helps my mom take a shower and wash her hair. That was the biggest reason to get them because I was just concerned about her needing help in the shower. We've even done a little cooking when we have time, and it has worked out fine. The girl who normally comes on Wednesday was sick, so an alternative was sent to fill in. She was quite nice and everything went smoothly. The company seems to be doing a good job of keeping in touch and letting us know what's going on. The caregivers are good. No complaints, so far. They're doing what we asked them to do and they're doing a good job."

"We used Care Advantage for my mom. I wanted someone to be there to help her out. My mom has rheumatoid arthritis and when she has a flare up she can't move around. Their service was just for someone to help my mom with getting to the bathroom and taking a bath. The caregiver did an excellent job. My mom was pleased. The lady that they sent did a good job. They worked with us on that and they did a good job."

I am John Bonner, proud owner of Homewatch CareGivers of Richmond. RVA has been home to me for just about my entire life as my family moved here from New Jersey at an early age. I could not be happier with the decision my parents made decades ago to come to RVA. I have truly enjoyed growing up here, raising my family here, and I am very excited to see what my growing hometown will look like in the next decade. I came into this business not only as an owner, but as a client. After my father suffered a stroke, my family had to face the exceedingly difficult decisions that needed to be made regarding aging and the care for both of my parents. They each had vastly different needs and sorting through all the information that was available was initially very overwhelming. We understand the emotional toll this takes on a family and we further understand the difficult task of choosing care for the people you love. My personal experience, and that of our staff, gives a unique understanding and perspective in how to provide the best possible care to our clients and their families. Our mission every day is to promote, preserve, and restore health. We use this as a daily reminder to help assist our clients live as much of an independent lifestyle as they possibly can. Please consider Homewatch CareGivers of Richmond if you want to work with a team of professionals who will foster an environment where your loved one can remain in their own home with independence, dignity, and safety. Our guiding principal is to provide our clients with the kind of service that we would want for our own families. We understand how it feels to bring someone into your home when there is a need for professional care, and we make every effort to match our clients with the right caregiver. We strive to give our caregivers a great place to work, where they feel valued and part of our extended family. By doing so, we know our caregivers will extend those feelings to our clients. We specialize in the following types of care: 24-hour care – short or long term care Alzheimer’s care for those suffering from dementia and related illnesses Hospice support for those needing end of life care Chronic care for the disabled and those with diseases and chronic conditions Rehabilitative care for those who are recovering from an injury or illness Thank you for taking the time to read a bit about ‘our story’ and we hope to be the organization of choice with you or a loved ones home care needs in the future. - John

"We're with Options For Senior America. It's just fantastic for my wife. We're fine with it. The caregivers are great, very kind, and anticipate things for my wife that I don't even anticipate, and she just loves them. She just loves all the people and goes to the daycare during the day. She loves it so much that she calls it "going to work." In her mind, she's helping others, and to me that's the most important thing. They offer in-home care, have a 24-hour facility if you need it, and cater to all types of situations. My wife has frontotemporal dementia, which is a really rare form of dementia. It's not even dementia in the classic clinical terms, but they're really good with her, and she just loves them, and she just looks forward to it every day, and I'm glad for that. I'm happy with them, and the price is pretty good. They're reasonable. "

" I was disappointed in the level of service provided by BrightStar, and I would definitely not recommend this company, especially if your loved one has dementia. Because my mother could not remember what tasks she needed help with, she got very little assistance. I had provided a list of tasks, including 3 times a week bathing, throwing out old food, checking that she had taken her medications, making sure she locked her door, was wearing her medical alert necklace, light housekeeping, etc., but this list was not given to the various aides that showed up. (During this period when BrightStar was coming six days a week, a cleaning company refused to clean her bathrooms because of smeared feces on the floors.) My mother would dismiss the aides after half an hour, saying she “couldn't think of a thing for them to do.” (This was not adequately communicated to me. I only found out when I installed nanny cams in the home.) The company went through a series of bookkeepers, and as soon as one had learned the ropes, she was gone, only to be replaced by someone who had to learn the process for submitting invoices and logs to the insurance company for reimbursement. We chose this company because they would agree to a 2 hour minimum – my mother's preference – instead of the standard 3 or 4 hour minimum other companies require, but I regret the choice. After my mother moved to assisted living, the company without authorization debited money from my mother’s bank account to pay for past services that I had hesitated to pay without receiving the logs for those dates. (The insurance company won’t reimburse without receiving the daily logs.) I had requested the daily logs for those invoices, and the company never sent them to me. Imagine my surprise when I notice over $800 taken from the account without either my knowledge or consent! "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
