"My mother-in-law is in Mystic Healthcare and Rehab. It is very clean. The staff is fantastic. The staff members are so excellent, which is really important when you're in a place that has people that genuinely care about you. I couldn't rate them better. The dining area is nice, clean, and welcoming. However, the food is not up to par. They serve sandwiches way too much. They could really improve on their food. They do bingo once in a while, which is nice, but they're a little short on activities. They could use some more activities for the residents."

"Groton Regency Center has multiple levels of care. They have a nursing home, a mid level, and then assisted living. You go in the front door, and there’s a security individual there to check you in. They did a good job. The only problem is they’re very typical of some of the nursing homes that I’ve seen because a lot of people were sitting in either wheelchairs or chairs out in the hallways, and that drives me crazy. "

"The place that that had continuing offerings for care that was the most affordable was Fairview Retirement Community in Groton. It's a very nice place, it's a nice location, and the apartments are good, and they're very affordable for me. The people are lovely. It's very lovely. They only have like 30 apartments for independent living, but they offer everything after that all the way to skilled nursing and everything. It's a very realistic choice. It's not luxurious like so many places. It does not have a food plan, which for me is fine because the apartment comes with a full kitchen and you're going to use it, so you don't need to have a food plan. The staff is patient. They answer all the questions. They're lovely, they're enthusiastic, and they're very welcoming. They are not doing heavy sales thing. They have a little café, and you can order from there and have it delivered to your space if you want, or to the little dining room they have, but they do not have a food service. I think that's why the cost is much less than a lot of places. It's a rental, too. You don't buy in there. It's truly for independent people. You can hire some help to come in if you need assisted living. They don't have a full area for that, although they have assisted living assistance, but it's not included, and you would be paying for that. They have a nursing home, which was what the original facility was all about. They just renovated it in 2010. The one large building they have, they renovated it, and put apartments in instead of having all nursing homes. "

"On several visits to Beechwood I was impressed with the friendliness and caring approach of the staff, and the cleanliness of the facility. For patients and family, convalescence may often be slower than expected. "Fountainview Care Center was clean, it was nice, and the help was alright. Everything was alright. I was a patient there three or four times. The staff was very good, and I had no problems with them. "

"Regency Heights is a skilled nursing home and the person that we placed there liked the facility. They also accepted the insurance that we have. They have case management and social works. They have activities and programs available for the residents. The residents are also enjoying the activities. There rooms are congruent, not private, but shared room. "

"I highly recommend South Kingstown Nursing Rehabilitation Center. I think the staff has a good understanding of memory issues, and the facility itself is very nice. It's very up-to- date and clean. I have no complaints. The activity director is wonderful. She's very involved in all the patient's activities like what they do during the day and it's ongoing throughout the day. The CNAs give good personal care and they tried throughout the day to keep the patients with memory problems engaged. My husband is in a shared room. The staff is good. He has severe dementia but they can communicate with him. The food is excellent."

"Right now my mom is at Greentree Manor, a nursing facility, because she needs 24 hour care. She moved there about six weeks ago. I know everyone there and I'm looking at all the details just to make sure she is comfortable as possible. So far, I am very pleased with this nursing facility. The staff is very cooperative and very forthcoming. They set up doctor's appointments and they have their own vehicles to bring the patients to the doctors and to the hospital. I am very pleased with their setup. "

"I am appalled at the way the conditions have been becoming over here. The floors are taped because the floors are coming up, the only time you see aids when they’re on their cell phones in the hallway, can’t get your loved one changed and it’s 11 AM, there is absolutely no compassion in this place! Upon arrival today to visit a loved one there was commotion at the nurses desk they were getting ready to discharge a patient to the family because they were appalled and disgusted of the treatment that is given to their loved one! I believe it’s time to move on, and for the people that work there don’t do it for the dollar do it because you have a caring heart!! I don’t know how many times I have talked to head people in there but it looks like it goes to a deaf ear!"

"I have been dealing with nursing homes for 40 years having dealt with placing relatives in nursing facilities for rehab and long term care and working with clients in my former employment. My 94 year old mother had a knee injury which necessitated a stay in the hospital and rehab at a nursing facility. When my mother left the hospital and entered Scallop Shell on March 6, I did not know what to expect. It was not close to my home so I would not be able to be in and out checking on things as I did with previous homes. I have to say that both my daughter and I left this nursing home feeling comfortable about leaving my mother there. This was a first! Says a lot for Scallop Shelll! Mom entered Scallop Shell on March 6th and spent 10 days there. It was an adjustment and of course it took her a few days to get comfortable. I am going to post a couple of excerpts from my Facebook page while my mother was there which will show you how happy we were with SS. Mom is so happy today. Mom always asks everyone she meets if they play Cribbage. Mom and Dad won many trophies in the RI Cribbage Association when my dad was alive. She found a partner for cribbage! Scallop Shell Nursing and Rehab is amazing. A dietary worker happens to be French and got talking to my mom and the subject of cribbage came up. Today this worker, Michele, came in with a cribbage board and they played a few games. Michele skunked Mom the first game but things got better. Imagine an employee who actually took the time to entertain my mom. I am so impressed! Kudos to Michele! Classic Mom comment for the day: "#1 daughter doesn't always get what she wants" . She is absolutely right but she was referring to my asking them to give her a shower. LOL I could not go there today, absolutely emotionally and physically exhausted, but when I called the nurse, she was cracking up over Mom's sense of humor. They won't find her funny when she finds out that she is not going home tomorrow! Her other comment yesterday was that there was a lot of old people in there! Mom is 94!! Who knows? She is doing well and may be out sooner than we thought. She is very determined to get out! Mom's cribbage friend came back today to play the "rubber" game. Don't know who won because we had a Family Meeting to go to. She should be going home by Tuesday but the people at Scallop Shell like her so much, they told her they weren't letting her go! Poor us! She is going to expect all that attention from us when she is home. All and all a good day except that her roommate is not happy that Mom is having all that attention. Actually, the attention was from Marilyn, the PT department head and Christine, the discharge planner. Both were there to facilitate Mom's plans to go home. Christine spoke French with Mom and sang her some French songs. Too much activity and noise for her roommate which we are very sorry about but if this is keeping Mom happy while she is there, then what can I say? Kudos to Scallop Shell! Going down to see Mom in a little while. She is feeling neglected today because she got herself up and dressed and no one on the staff has come in to see her. She thinks she is getting the 'cold-shoulder'. LOL She doesn't realize that it is the weekend and that there are new staff on that might not know her as well as new admissions who need more attention than she. Also that her schedule is not as rigorous with PT/OT as it is during the week but she will have PT today and OT tomorrow. Hopefully she'll get some company today or there will be a cribbage partner for her before I get to her. I can just imagine what it is going to be like when she gets home in her apartment and she is living her normally quiet existence. Wonder how she'll handle that. My mother went home on March 17th. We were very pleased with the care that she received at Scallop Shell. All the staff were nice to her and I noticed that they treated everyone the same, with much respect. I was very impressed with the Admissions Director/Social Services, Felicia, as she was very cooperative whenever we asked something of her. I have read other comments about Scallop Shell that I would like to comment on. One was the cataloging of clothing--this was done on everything that was brought in and out of the nursing home. We took care of her laundry. I was impressed with the cameras monitoring every exit in the building as well as hallways. I feel that input on stays at a facility is very important to people who are looking for a safe place for their relative. My only regret is that my mother could not stay there since I know that she needs 24 hour care but is not "nursing home" material because she is so sharp for her age. I would not hesitate to ask Scallop Shell to take should she ever need rehab or nursing care in the future. I wish they would open an Assisted Living facility. Lastly, I must comment on the ONLY negative and that is that the room thermostat in my mother's room was turned down to 60 on two occasions and the room was freezing. I would hope that this doesn't happen often as the elderly have poor circulation and thin skin. Mom and her roommate told me that they were freezing and I even I noticed that the room was very cold which was unusual. This occurred that last two days that my mother was there. But other than that, it is a very clean, well run facility with a lovely staff! "

"Norwichtown Rehabilitation is a nursing home and rehabilitation. They have a lot of staff, they're very helpful, and it's very easy to inquire how my mother is doing. There is always somebody that will answer or refer me to the right person so we're very satisfied with it. The staff is very efficient. They have books, puzzles, and a game room but my mother's not able to do it right now. The rehab is very good too. There are a few family rooms there too and there is a salon. There are also certain doctors that come in. They've also done a lot of renovations in their facility. It's a well-maintained community and it's close to home."
